Put a Ring on It

Ten year old Seulgi puffed her cheeks, pouting, while Joohyun simply wiped the ice cream on the little girl’s cheek. The older girl had a smile on her face which made the little girl frown even more.

“Unnie is bad.”

“She is not.” Joohyun replied tapping Seulgi’s now clean rosy cheeks.

“She kicked the ball at me.”

Joohyun nodded as the little girl tried to state her case once more. She gently checked the small wound on Seulgi’s lips, caressing it case it hurt.

“I didn’t do anything. I said hi. She kicked the ball at me.”

“Maybe she likes you?” Joohyun joked, pulling the little girl into a hug.

“Then why would she hurt me?”

“You know, sometimes, our friends hurt us unknowingly, so we have to let them know. Otherwise, they won’t stop what’s hurting us. I’m sure Soojung-ssi didn’t mean to. Look at her. She’s frowning. I’m sure she wants to play with you again but is too scared to ask. How about you go over to her?” Joohyun pushed Seulgi a little.

She watched as the little one walked slowly towards Soojung.

She watched how Seulgi cutely smiled then held out her hand, Soojung taking it with a wide smile.

Suddenly the thirteen year old felt a little different.

One day, Seulgi would have friends her age and would be independent enough not to need her anymore.

Her eyes cast towards the green grass at her feet.

When that day comes, Joohyun would surely miss having sweet little Seulgi in her arms.

College was a dreadful to say the least.

But everybody needed to get through it have a good chance at landing a better job. Joohyun was no exception. It was a good thing she was able to get a scholarship. It took more effort on the side of Joohyun. But at least, everything from the dorm, fees, books as well as meals were taken care of.

Her only problem now was getting homesick from time to time.

Her thoughts usually fell on her family and Seulgi.

Seulgi

She wondered how that little girl was.

Last time she saw her Seulgi was on her way to Seoul to study. Her parents were based in the city so they had to take Seulgi with them.

Joohyun stared at her ring finger and smiled at that thin thread tied around it.

It felt foolish at the time, being given a make-shift ring.

Seulgi was crying so hard she couldn’t even understand what the child was saying that day.

All she knew was that, Joohyun must not take it off till they meet again.

It was a silly promise.

Who knows if Seulgi would still remember?

But she loved that little girl like she was her own sister.

Joohyun kept her promise.

Just then her musings were cut short by her phone.

Joohyun thought hard. Her family members were the only ones who knew her number. It was a fact that no one would give it away without her permission. She was sure she saved her sister’s number. That was unless she had changed hers.

She didn’t have to think that long.

Sorry. It’s me Seulgi!

Joohyun smirked at the message.

Really now?

Aw. Baechu-Unnie, I had a hard time asking for your number. Don’t do this to me. I’ll call if you like. :3

Joohyun smiled then began to call Seulgi.

“Unnie!”

“How are you? Hope you grew up to be a proper lady when I see you.”

“Hmp! I’m going to be better. How are you Unnie? I missed you!”

“School is alright. But I miss home. Have you been back to Daegu yet?”

“Yup! I went on a trip back with Soojung last month. That’s how I got your number. I was hoping you were home. Why do you have to cram? :3”

“I’m on a scholarship Seulgi-ah… I have to study really hard. I’m glad you’re getting along with Soojung. Did she move to Seoul too?”

“Yup! We go to the same school too. It makes it less lonely.”

“Aigoo… Missing your Baechu-Unnie?

“Uhum… Very much…”

Joohyun smiled in silence and listened to Seulgi tell stories about stuff she had been missed out.

Coffee would be a source of caffeine to jumpstart one’s day. That was true if you drank it. As of the moment, Joohyun didn’t need to drink the coffee in front of her. The thought of seeing Seulgi again made her heart bounce like crazy.

Of course she knew Seulgi was special.

She just didn’t want to acknowledge how much.

She was her dongsaeng.

Her best friend

In their world whatever Joohyun was feeling hopeless.

Pointless

But then it didn’t stop her heart from leaping at the sight of Seulgi when she finally arrived.

She had grown more beautiful.

Attractive

Boyish

Joohyun confirmed that she was swooning over her. But then alongside Seulgi was Soojung. Hands entwined making that momentary burst of happiness disappear.

She had grown beautiful as well.

By the looks of it, Seulgi and Soojung would make a cute couple.

Joohyun had to hide her hand with the old thread of a ring.

She felt silly now.

Maybe she was really so closed to the world. It only consisted of Seulgi and her family.

She couldn’t expect Seulgi not to have other friends.

Much more, return her feelings one day.

Although in pain, she smiled and bowed at her dongsaengs.

In true Bae Joohyun fashion, she hid her pain and let Seulgi enjoy the day with her.

That to Joohyun was enough.
