Paper Airplane Poet
Description
Nineteen and flying free was what she wanted to be, yet in all her years Haneul has labeled herself a paper airplane girl–lost in the skies, without destination, nowhere to go and nowhere to be. That is, until the winds bring her to Seoul– where she hoped to find herself and chase her dreams– and to her paper airplane poet who might just be that push she’s been waiting for to blow her in the right direction.
Foreword
I stop to catch my breath, my body quickly cooling down due to the blanket of late September air that began to wrap itself around me. In no time at all, I felt refreshed– calm and cool; yet I knew somehow that my heart was only beginning to catch fire.
The flames within seemed to grow hotter every step I took, and I seemed to be losing all my breath and my everything as I got closer to the building– closer to him, to his heart.
Then I stop.
My hands curl up into shaking fists at my side, my eyes wide and my mouth agape.
My breathing, my heartbeat, my world: they all seemed to have stopped. And I was frozen.
For the first time, the paper airplane girl has gained control of her own wings and flung her own body towards a destination she dubbed as her goal. And now that she was here, being faced in front of the treasure she was looking for, not knowing how to land, everything inside her seemed to shut down.
She felt like she was going to crash.
For the first time, she knew where to go. She knew where she wanted to land. Yet, she was unsure, afraid that her fragile, paper airplane heart might not be able to handle the impact.
And she looked in front of her and there it was–there he was– crashing towards her like a comet, shining in all his splendor, in all glory. He was a light she’d been waiting for all her life, the answer to her wishes on a star. And seeing him standing in front of her made her wonder if this was real at all, if he existed at all. Then there he was stepping towards her slowly, and somehow it seemed like she was falling from the sky in slow motion, and she closed her eyes to prepare herself for what was to come.
I close my eyes, and let myself fly away.
“Haneul,” I could hear him say, and I squeeze my eyes shut. Here it comes. The paper airplane girl is going to crash, and her paper airplane heart is going to shatter into pieces.
