Character Profiles:

Bae Joo-Hyun "Irene"

Irene is the young owner of 언덕 coffee shop, she is very eccentric, optimistic, energetic, awkward, and far from elegant.
She usually acts before she speaks and can be rather impulsive, but holds a lot of innocence to her, nonetheless. She is free-spirited and open minded. But all these traits can somehow look faint when she interacts with Seul Gi. Showing how shy she really his at the same time. Irene is also a pure and hopeless romantic, dreaming of romance as she flips away the pages of her novels and looks at Seul Gi.
She has also struggled with some self-confidence, as she often looks down upon herself and views herself as nerdy and awkward.
In the end she is an extremely sweet, selfless and loving character. But because of her impulsive attitude, she has a tendency to get herself into quite a bit of trouble...

Kang Seul Gi

Seul Gi is a young artist who appears calm, reserved and experienced in all manner of instruments.

Beneath this calm and serene appearance, however, Seul Gi is quite complex.
Despite being mature and cautious now, things were not always like that, and because of something that happened in her past...
She consequently chose isolation from everyone she cared about.
This would eventually result in loneliness, misery, bitterness and grief. That would gradually take its toll on her.
She became reclusive, insecure, emotionally unstable, and genuinely depressed.
That was until she met her...and discovered her own little piece of heaven on earth, and that was 언덕 coffee shop.
Her true persona, one that is warm, loving, and innocently mischievous, came about - but only briefly, and with restriction after she started visiting the place.
Only this bitter coffee can cure her now.

Foreword

My name is Bae Joo-Hyun but everyone calls me Irene, it's a nickname that sort of appeared when I was in Middle School and has stuck ever since.
I own a small coffee shop on top of a hill, in Cheongdam-Dong, the coffee shop was the only thing my parents have left me since they passed away and since the small place was always their dream I vowed to keep it open. Today...I'm just doing what I do best...waiting for you...Kang Seul Gi, to step through that door...

I looked at you as you came in through the door on yet another Sunday morning. You were flawless like always and I don't know if my little heart can really handle all of you. I smiled and you smiled back, we looked at each other's eyes and I could swear yours were smiling.
I poured the dark and bitter coffee you like so much in the mug I kept just for you. I put it in front of you, you smiled.

"Thank you" You said.

I looked at your lips, at your face, your beautiful expression as you talked, if anything was perfect on this earth, that would be you.
*thump, thump*
I felt my heart skip two beats, for most people that would be a good sign, but not for me...
I went behind the counter and slowly poured myself a glass of water. I drank it all in one gulp before letting out a sigh and putting the glass in the sink. You approached the counter then and smiling you asked me.

"Are you okay?"

I smiled, even though you don't know me at all, you asked...

"Yes, I...just needed some water"

You bowed slightly and went back to your seat, I once again sat behind the counter, on that same wooden stool and pulled out one of my books, I put on my glasses and somehow I pretended to read, I never really paid much attention to the books, well, not as long as you were here. I stole small glances at you as I skipped through the words on the pages. Today was different you brought your guitar. You looked around and saw that there weren't really anymore clients, it was already late in the afternoon, close to closing time.
You came to the counter again, I put down my book and with your sweet sugary lips you asked me.

"Can I play? I mean, I don't want to bother you" You said as you smiled. I looked at you and smiled.

"Sure" I said.

I saw it when you looked at me and smiled. You grabbed the case with the guitar inside and moved to the furthermost corner in the shop.
Pretending to get back to reading my book I looked over the book, I wanted to see you, did you play well? Were you good?
I mean, you looked so cool while you handled the guitar I couldn't stop thinking about it, and you.
With eyes on my book but ears devoted to you I listened as you tuned the guitar and then moved on to play it.
And then, I actually got engaged in my book, I don't know how much time passed but the hours seemed to fly away with you playing and me reading. I looked out the window, the sun was setting, the street lights were coming on. I grabbed your mug while you packed your guitar and poured more of the bitter coffee you so much like. I gave it to you.

"That was beautiful, I wouldn't mind if you want to come here to practice"

You smiled at me, I smiled inward and outward. This was the longest conversations I've ever had with you since you started coming here. *thump, thump* I felt my heart skip again.
I balanced myself by putting a hand on the table. You looked at me and frowned, you touched my arm in a comforting gesture.

"Are you okay?"

I nodded and smiled.

"I would very much like to come back and practice more, it's so peaceful here" You said.

"Now, I'll see you tomorrow?" You said.

"Yes...tomorrow" I said as I smiled.

I grabbed my things and walked you out. I locked the door and watched as you got on your bicycle and left, like you always do. I smiled.
With that I hoped and promised myself that I would see you again.
