Just The Two Of Us
Description
For as long as he could remember, Zitao had been in the encampment. For all he knew he was probably born there. Throughout the years he’s seen more than a person his age should have. By the time he was four he had seen people suffer. By the time he was ten he had seen people tortured. And by the time he was sixteen he had seen people killed. Now at the age of seventeen he realizes that these things aren’t what should’ve been happening. This place, where he had been in misery for as long as he could remember, shouldn’t have even been established. It was a prison, a cage, and the only thing that came out of it was tears, blood, and lifeless bodies. The sad part is he doesn’t even want to leave. He doesn’t have the energy to leave, the courage. He doesn’t even know if there’s some other place to run to. But when someone begins to tell tales, this submission begins to change. He hears of new places, where the grass isn’t just dirt, where the skies aren’t tainted with ash, where there is such thing as happiness. Now it takes all the effort he can muster to decide what he wants to do and where he wants to go, no matter the harm it could do.
Foreword
"His name is Wu Yi Fan, Number 8600."
The new Worker's hair was light, it was between a blonde and a brown, his eyes dark yet alight with something. Somehow he managed to smile, Zitao smirked, knowing that that smile would be gone in a matter of days, if not sooner. Yifan looked mature but there was a peculiar youth in his features. Though perhaps it was just the ignorance that was obvious on his face. Good luck, Zitao wished him in his thoughts.
"Tao," the kid beside me whispered. His name was Luhan, he couldn't have been older than fifteen, but no one knew his actually age, "he says there's a place."
"A place?" Zitao whispered back, gnawing at the meat in his hands.
"Yeah," he sighed wistfully. "He said he's been there, to that place." Zitao looked questioningly at the boy and waited for him to explain. "He keeps telling these stories. These stories of some place. Somewhere different. He said it isn't like this place, he said a light still exists and he keeps mentioning how the skies here aren't blue and grass is supposed to be green not yellow and dry." Zitao scoffed and looked back to the new person.
"He says he can take us there, Tao. To that place, where stars still shine and the air doesn't choke you. Don't you want to go to that place? It isn't like here." Tao barely heard the boy's wistful whisper, but when he did is ears perked up and he only seemed to have eyes for this Wu Yifan anymore.
