Foreword

There's ringing in my ears.

I'm sure my mouth is moving, Go Eun? ... but I can't hear my voice. Worse, I can't hear hers.

I turn to my left to see her silhouette, but her limbs look awkward and unnatural and she's pressed up against me. The car door opposite me is closer than it’s supposed to be. Go Eun? I say again. She doesn’t respond, but I can feel her hand. It’s delicate and cold and it envelops my fingers. But it’s not moving … I try to squeeze it but I can’t. I can’t do anything except turn my head and listen to the thumping of my heart.

“Miss?”
My eyes fly open to find an old man's face in front of me, concern on his deeply wrinkled faced.
“You were gasping for air," he says.
It took me a moment to get my bearings. As I felt the presence of his fingers on my arm, my body curls into itself before I can stop the knee-jerk response to his touch.
He removes his hand with a gentle smile.
“Sorry. I just thought you should be woken up.”
Swallowing, I manage to croak out, “thank you.”
He nods and shifts back to his seat at the front, hands back on the steering wheel. "Must be a bad dream, ha?”
“Yeah,” I answer in my usual calm, vacant voice. “And I can’t wait to wake up.”
