Ah….it’s this time of the year again… Min Ah thought as she peered through the windows she was wiping. Floods of white snow everywhere, people swarming in and out of department stores buying last minute presents, children running around with reindeer antlers, the elderly slipping on icy stairs and couples sharing some time together away from the stresses of their tiring daily lives…

I really envy those couples….even after an exhausting day of work they can go home with a big smile as their partners embrace them and ask if everything was okay…I really envy them…nobody has said ‘You’re home? How was school?’ or ‘Everything’s going to be okay Min Ah…” well….not ever since my parents were alive.

When I was 8 years old, my father died in a fight after he was drunk. My mother couldn’t take the sudden loss and stress. She carried all the debts and responsibilities on her shoulders. Skipping meals, working long, heavy shifts and ruining her own health, she would save enough money for me to continue my studies.

My classmates wouldn’t be all that surprised at why I come top in nearly every test if they knew what my mother went through. She passed away when she was too weak to even fight against a cold. A cold she never told me about, knowing I would stop my studies to earn money for her medical fees. I hate feeling useless and kept in the dark.

When I was 16 I found a small apartment and was neighbours with a student named Kai who attended the same school as me. He was a playboy but kind enough to persuade his mother to be my caregiver and sign all the official school documents. In return I have to keep him company whenever he feels bored.

I soon fell in love with Kai or should a say a one-sided love. I confessed but he made it clear he had absolutely no feelings for me. How embarrassing. But I still admit I have lingering feelings for him.

Who knows what will happen next…

Character Profiles:

Min Ah (OC)

An orphan working hard to pay off rent.

Occupation: Works at Paradise Cafe (a small cafe owned by Kyung-Soo) and any other small jobs she can get her hands on while studying at Seoul High School.

Kai

An ulzzang who is spoilt rotten by his rich family. He was bored and decided to try living independently (still spending his parents money and living off their luxury while using this ‘independence experiment’ as an excuse to escape from their ranting and restricted lifestyles) while renting an apartment next to Min Ah. 

Luhan

A mysterious boy that’s interested in Min Ah.
