Reaching for the Stars

Description

Jiha, a sasaeng fan, slowly learns how detrimental her innocent "hobby" is to the person she loves.

Foreword

IMPORTANT NOTE: This is not a conventional fan fiction. So if you're looking for a nice story about Kai falling in love with you/OC/other-bias, this probably isn't the place for you. I recently took a class called "Popular Culture in East Asia" in college and the course was awesome. For our final project, we were given the option of taking on a creative endeavor, i.e. writing a fan fiction. Since I write fan fiction, I decided to try it for this class. However, what ended up happening is, I didn't actually write a fan fiction as much as I ended up writing a story about fans. In particular, this story is about sasaeng fans because I chose the sasaeng phenomenon and obsessive fan culture as my research topic for my final project. I'm not posting my research paper up because that's kinda risky, but if you're interested in learning what I've found out about celebrity worship syndrome, feel free to contact me and I'll tell you all about it.

DISCLAIMER: I borrowed the main premise of the storyline from some anonymous sasaeng fan account that I read years ago about a girl who decided to stop being a saaeng after realizing how much she was hurting her bias by being one. If anyone can find a link to it, please send it to me so I can properly credit it! I really tried hard to portray sasaeng fans as accurately as I could. I am honestly not trying to insult anyone with this portrayal. Most of this story was an experiment in characterization. My original character's personality is informed by the following research:

Also, thank you to Anj for coming up with the clever title.

Excerpt:

"Although she was sure she must have sprained her index finger or something, she too couldn’t wait to tell their fellow fans about their exhilarating experience at the airport today. But in the back of her head, Jiha pondered whether or not to write about Kai’s fall, or the look of disgust in his face when he turned and looked at her. Jiha decided to shrug off the encounter. It was natural of him to feel that way; he must be tired. That didn’t mean he didn’t appreciate her or her efforts to see him. And besides, now that he’d had a substantial amount of time to look at her face, Jiha blushed at the thought that Kai would recognize her. She was no longer just another face in the crowd. She was the girl he fell for."

I couldn't help but anticipate Kai's reaction after seeing her card! It's so motivational even with the regular fans to make the idols proud! This is an awesome story!

Chapter 6: I stumbled across this story like many others did, but I can't say how much this story felt real and eye opening. It brought me to tears and I very much loved the way Jiha's character changes over the chapters :)
