new contest

if you want a challenge!

Tender Rose is now closed » Thank you to all the participants!  Many people were asking if I'd be doing a second round of Tender Rose.  I sort of am (details are below with a link!), but this thread is now closed for business.

First Frost

The First Frost Writing Challenge

Like Tender Rose, the First Frost writing challenge aims to cater to writers of one-shots, short stories and long fics with a variety of different categories.  Rather than themes, this time round, there are prompts.  There's also a greater range of prizes than Tender Rose had.

Once again, it's EXO(/idol) x OC if the story contains romance and some of the challenges have slightly more relaxed deadlines than others.  Why not challenge yourself with one of the challenge categories?

See you there!

Foreword

Writing contest for with categories for short fics, long fics and one-shots on three different themes. EXOxOC is preferred but any IDOLxOC (or bromance) is welcome! Come and join!

why 'tender rose'?

There are lots of writing competitions out there, so why Tender Rose?
» People have asked for a while if I plan to host a writing competition, and after looking around at other competitions, I decided I would.  The rubric is different to most, allowing for three different categories (with different deadlines) and therefore types of story, as well as three different stimulus themes.  On top of that, there is a prize category awarded by the readers rather than the judge, which I have never seen done elsewhere.
» I felt the quote from David Boyce to be a nice parallel of the writing process – when we finish a work and hand it over to a reader, they gain a different and unique interpretation that is fuelled by the beauty of the story they are reading.

hosts

korekrypta Main host and judge.  You may know Korey as the author of The Blood Brother Code or as part of the get2herheart-Korekrypta duo.

Starcross Provider of the graphics for the 1st place winners of the 'long haul', 'fast track' and 'short haul' categories.  StarCross has made awesome graphics for a number of stories and has a portfolio site which can be found here.

elcome to the Tender Rose writing contest!  Tender Rose aims to cater to a variety of different writers and story forms – from one shots to mid-length stories, or, for the very quick writers and NaNo-ers among us, full length stories.  Not just that, but in addition to ranked winners and honorary mentions, which can be found in most contests, there is a 'readers' choice' category that will be determined not by the judge but by your readers.  There is plenty of karma up for grabs across a wide range of prizes, as well as the potential to be featured in Korey's fanfic recs list or even get a detailed review of the opening of your story.  (For a full list of prizes, please click here.)
» There are three different themes (stimuli/prompts) for this competition across three different categories.  More details can be found about the themes and the categories in the foreword section below, and there is the additional option of prompts if you wish to have one, but here they are in brief:
(Please note that each theme must be combined with a category of your choice.)

silent love » Portrayal of love without the characters saying they love each other.
exodus » Moving onto pastures new (potentially en masse), metaphorically or literally.
enter the unicorn » Anything goes.  Especially comedy, fluff and fantasy.
fast track » Written over the course of November 2015.
short haul » One-shots and short fics completed by Dec. 31st 2015.
long haul » Minimum of 25K words completed by May 30th 2016.

If you need a further prompt in addition to the theme you have chosen, please click here.

entry & regulations

one » Subscribe.  You won't get updates if you don't, and subscription is part of confirmation of entry.  Upvotes are appreciated but not mandatory.
two » You may enter at any point up until a week before the category deadline (see 'Themes and Categories' below for specific rules).  Similarly, you may withdraw at any point up until final judgement, but please let me know.
three » A blog post about the contest is not required, but would probably help when it comes to advertising your contest piece (which you might want for the Readers' Choice prize).
four » As confirmation of entry, please ensure that your story is tagged with tenderrose and has a link to this contest in the foreword (preferably with the banner) along with the theme and category you have picked, and leave me a comment here with your story link with theme and category.  (If you're unsure, there is a form here.)  When category entries close, I will provide a link you can share for readers to vote for the Readers' Choice prize.
Five » Anything started after June 1st 2015 is allowed (*see the 'Fast Track category for special rules).  The fic must be finished by the deadline of your category and not updated after or it will be disqualified.  In the case of 'Long Haul', I will allow extensions if requested but you will not place higher than 3rd.
six » Plagiarism and bashing will not be tolerated.
Seven » Each contest entry must fall in one of the three categories (Fast Track, Short Haul, Long Haul) and one of the themes (Silent Love, Exodus, Enter The Unicorn).  The combination of category and theme is up to you, as is your interpretation of the theme.  You may use a prompt if you feel it necessary.
eight » You may enter up to three stories for the contest, but only one per category.  All three may be of the same theme if you so wish.

ninE » M-rated stories are allowed provided they are not PWP/a.  Stories revolving around or with gratuitous will be disqualified.
ten » Subscribers and Members Only are allowed.  Invitation/friends only is not.
Eleven » No idol x idol, or yuri, of any kind (even unrequited).  OCs and a whole lot of bromance/sismance are totally allowed and welcomed.  My preference is EXO, but you may use any group (male or female) you wish.  It will not affect your chances of winning whatsoever.
Twelve » Beta readers and co-authors are allowed but prizes are only awarded to the principle author.  Sharing is up to you.  If you would like a beta reader, please fill out this form.
thirteen » You may enter your story for other competitions if you so wish.

FOURTEEN » Have fun and enjoy yourselves!  And encourage people to enter or to come here to find stories to read!

themes and categories

and their requirements

Home: Information FAQ  Judging Rubric  Prizes  Library 1|2

category: fast track

Start date: November 1st 2015 00.00 GMT

End date: November 30th 2015 23.59 GMT

WINNERS

Because I would really like more people to enter for this one and the time scale is tougher, those who enter for Fast Track by November 4th will automatically receive 150 karma points upon completion of their Fast Track entry.

November is National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo)!  All 'Fast Track' stories are to be written (and completed) during the month of November.  Stories started before November 1st (except their forewords, which may date back to June 1st 2015) or marked completed after November 30th will be disqualified unless you wish to move them to the 'Short Haul' or 'Long Haul' categories.  The latest you may enter for this category is November 23rd 2015.

'Fast Track' is not specific to one-shots, short fics or long fics – all are equally welcome provided they are written within the timeframe.  A minimum of 2000 words is mandatory for all stories.  A great opportunity for those of you participating in NaNoWriMo!

category: short haul

Start date: June 1st 2015 00.00 GMT

End date: December 31st 2015 23.59 GMT

WINNERS

Any story begun after June 1st this year is viable for entry so long as it is marked completed by December 31st.  Any story that is marked "updated" after December 31st will be disqualified.  The latest you may enter for this category is December 24th 2015.

'Short Haul' is specifically for one-shots and short fics.  Minimum required word count is 2000 words; the maximum is 20 000 words.  If your story ends up longer than 20 000 words, you have the option of moving it into the 'Long Haul' category up until 'Short Haul' entries close.  If this one goes well, I will hold a second 'Short Haul' contest in April.

No extensions to the deadline are permitted for 'Short Haul'.

category: Long haul

Start date: June 1st 2015 00.00 GMT

End date: May 31st 2016 July 15th 2016 23.59 GMT

Any story begun after June 1st this year is viable for entry so long as it is marked completed by July 15th 2016.  Any story that is marked "updated" after May 31st will be disqualified.  The latest you may enter for this category is May 24th 2016.

'Long Haul' is specifically for long fics over 25 000 words.  There is no maximum word limit.

Extensions to the deadline are permitted if you specifically request them; however, any story that is not marked "completed" by the deadline will not be elegible for a prize above 3rd place.

theme: silent love

Combinations: Silent Love/Fast Track,

Silent Love/Short Haul, Silent Love/Long Haul

Love is in what you do just as much as in what you say.  Show the characters' love – platonic, one-sided, romantic or otherwise!  There's just one catch: there must be no confession of love anywhere in the story.  The words "I love you" are not allowed to leave your characters' lips.

The more creative you are, the more likely you are to win.  I love a good one-sided love story, but I will get depressed if all the entries are about unrequited love.

Genres are a free-for-all (surprise me!), though I personally envisage this working well with angst, one-shots, slice of life or fluff.  THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT THIS THEME IS LIMITED TO THOSE GENRES OR CATEGORIES.

theme: exodus

Combinations: Exodus/Fast Track, Exodus/Short Haul,

Exodus/Long Haul

This can be taken literally, in the sense of a mass exit (or even just an exit), or interpreted more metaphorically.  "Coming of age" seemed a bit drab for this, but I guess this is loosely what this theme is aiming at – something to do with an idea of moving to greener pastures, leaving something behind, or even moving somewhere physically.  Or, in terms of characterisation, being somebody who the character wasn't before by the end.

Genres again are a free-for-all, though I personally envisage this working well with short/long fics, action, fantasy or angst.  THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT THIS THEME IS LIMITED TO THOSE GENRES OR CATEGORIES.

theme: enter the unicorn

Combinations: Enter The Unicorn/Fast Track, Enter The

Unicorn/Short Haul, Enter The Unicorn/Long Haul

Anything goes.  Just let your inner unicorn run wild.
The connotations are more towards the happy side of things, though, and probably those with fast pacing.  To be honest, though, all I'm really looking for with this is a lively, exciting read, so if you want to go for a really angsty murder mystery with lots of twists and turns, please do!  The easiest way for me to describe what I want is: imagine a door.  Open it.  What's on the other side that's worth writing about?

Genres once again are a free-for-all, though I envisage this working very well with crack fics and comedy in particular, or fast-paced action.  THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT THIS THEME IS LIMITED TO THOSE GENRES.

If you are stuck or would like a nudge, you may use one of the prompts, which must be displayed in your foreword.

Chapter 26: Thank you so much for bestowing "Genie" with the Exodus category winner!!! I nearly had a heart attack when I logged into AFF and saw the karma gifted to me by you and it took me a moment to understand that this meant I'd won something in your contest. So thank you for thinking so highly of my story, Korekrypta! And congratulations to all the other winners!

Chapter 26: I've never gotten to reading The Snake Lady, but I'm going to do that now. Baekhyun's the lead, right?

I can't TR is finished. It was around this time last year (a bit later) that I joined, and gosh, it's been a year. Thank you so much for hosting this contest, it's practically the reason I ever wrote a Baekhyun fic which actually led to me biasing him.

I received karma points from you and I was a little surprised and didn't really make the connection until I checked my update list. And even more surprised I won something, haha.

Good luck with First Frost! I'm still mentally debating whether or not I should enter a story I have or write a new one.
