Hyunbin came back from Japan and invited you to his house. You knocked on his glass door. He came downstairs in casual cardigan and pants. Hyunbin opened the door, “Come in.”

You warily stepped inside.

“I was just unpacking. Let me go find your gift.” Hyunbin opened his suitcase and dug through it.

You stood by the door, afraid of coming closer.

“Did I put it in my other suitcase?” Hyunbin scratched his head. He turned around and blinked in surprise. “What are you doing still standing there? Do you have to leave soon?”

You shook your head. “Then?” Hyunbin asked. You carefully sat on the sofa.

Hyunbin opened his other suitcase and dug through it. “Ah, found it.” He came over and sat down right next to you. “Here-“ Immediately, you got up and stepped back. Hyunbin blinked at you, “What’s the matter with you today?”

“Are you going to kiss me, too?!” You blurted.

“What?!” He gave you a puzzled look.

You finally told him what happened on your birthday. Hyunbin stared at you, “Lee Dongwook, our best friend, kissed you?”

“Oh God, yes!” You grew embarrassed at the thought and covered your face with the cushion. “Why is everyone in love with me?!”

Hyunbin raised an eyebrow, “You sound cockier than I do and that’s a lot.” You tapped your pouting lips, “I wasn’t trying to be arrogant…I’m really worried.”

“Damn…” Hyunbin was shocked, too. A smile grew on his face. “Who would’ve figured? Dongwook is in love with you.” You gaped at him, “You didn’t know?!” He shook his head. “But you know everything about him!” You accused. “I didn’t know he was in love with you, though! That’s how good he was at hiding his feelings.” Hyunbin shrugged, “But now it makes perfect sense. That is why he never had a girlfriend before. Huh. This is so interesting.”

You socked his shoulder, “It is not!”

Hyunbin turned his attention to you.

You jumped and covered your face with the cushion.

“What now?” He asked in irritance.

“This is how it all started with Dongwook oppa. He looked into my eyes then BAM! We were kissing!” You squealed. Hyunbin smirked, “So you’re thinking that I’m going to kiss you, too?” You peeked over the cushion, “You won’t?”

“I don’t know…now that you’ve said it…” Hyunbin started coming closer.

You crawled backwards, “Don’t!”

“Don’t what?” He asked in a low voice.

“Don’t do it, Hyunbin oppa! I swear!” You were cornered against the leg of the sofa. You had nowhere to run to now.

“Too late. You made me think about it.” Hyunbin grabbed your pillow and chucked it backwards.

“Oppa!” You squealed and squeezed your eyes shut tightly. Your heart was doing crazy flips now. *Somebody save me!*

You didn’t feel anything and opened one eye.

Hyunbin shook his head, “Babo.” He lightly flicked your forehead. “Ow!” You pouted. Hyunbin got off of you and straightened his cardigan. “If I wanted to kiss you, I would have already. I don’t have enough patience like Dongwook does.” He headed to the kitchen.

You followed him, “So you don’t love me?!”

“I love you but I’m not IN love with you.” Hyunbin dug through his fridge.

You sighed in relief. “Yeah, so keep dreaming.” He said.

You made a face. You sat at the table and sighed. “What do I do now? I feel so awkward around Dongwook oppa. I don’t know how to act around him anymore.”

Hyunbin sat across from you, “Just act like you always do.”

“But-“

“Why else do you think he didn’t tell you that he loved you? He knew you would be distant from him once you knew. It took Dongwook a lot of courage to confess to you that night. And since you’re acting awkward with him now, it probably makes him feel horrible.” He explained. “…You really think so?” You asked.

Hyunbin sighed and tapped your head, “Think a little, please. You’re my best friend but he is, too. If you hurt him, I can’t forgive you.”

You threw up your arms, “I don’t know what to do! I love Jaejoong oppa but Dongwook oppa just kissed me yet I can’t stop thinking about Jaejoong oppa…but Dongwook oppa is on my mind, too, and I just- UGH!” You buried your face in your arms.

Hyunbin chuckled and patted your head. “Don’t think. Just go with your heart.”

You looked up at him, “What if I end up choosing Jaejoong oppa? Won’t you be mad at me for hurting Dongwook oppa?”

“If you choose Jaejoong, I’ll tell Dongwook to suck it up like a man.” Hyunbin softened, “When I said I wouldn’t forgive you for hurting Dongwook, I didn’t mean I would be mad at you if you didn’t choose him. As long as you don’t play with his heart, I’m okay.” He left the kitchen for you to think alone.

*That didn’t help at all. I still don’t know who I should really love.* Your shoulders slumped. You heard the door open and a new voice in the living room.

“Is she here?” “Yep, in the kitchen.”

You sat up with a gasp *It’s Dongwook oppa!* You naturally looked for a hiding place. Dongwook came in and tilted his head, “What are you doing hiding in the broom cupboard?” *Dang it!* You stepped out with an uneasy laugh, “I wasn’t hiding, silly! Just…looking for a broom, that’s all.”

You met eyes with Hyunbin who crossed his arms and shook his head. He made his hands do the ‘talking’ sign. Hyunbin gave you a look and nodded at Dongwook.

“Can we talk?” He asked. You sighed and nodded, “Yes.”

Hyunbin nodded in content and gave you two some space.

You and Dongwook sat across from each other. “You’ve been avoiding me.” It wasn’t a question.

“I have.” You miserably acknowledged. “Is it because of what I said on your birthday?” He asked. You winced and he knew he was right.

“I didn’t confess to you for you to be uncomfortable. If you want, we can pretend it never happened.” Dongwook said. “But then you’ll be hurt.” You mumbled. “Better me than you.” He replied.

“Why are you so nice?! You’re making it harder for me to choose!” You slapped your forehead.

Dongwook grabbed your wrist to prevent you from hurting yourself more. “Look at me.”

You looked into his eyes.

“Don’t be pressured to pick me. If you still choose Jaejoong, I won’t be mad at you. I promise. We’ll go back to the way things were. I’m man enough to do that. All I want is for you to be happy.” Dongwook stated.

You softened.

“So in the meantime, don’t avoid me, all right? That hurts more than rejection, believe me.” He chuckled.

You nodded, “Araso. I won’t avoid you. And thank you for giving me time.”

Dongwook smiled and nodded, “Anything for you.” You were able to sincerely smile back at him again.

“If everything goes down the drain,” Hyunbin appeared, “You still have your last resort.” He pointed to himself.

Dongwook shoved him and the 3 of you laughed. It felt nice to laugh together again.

At that point on, you realized you could never live without Dongwook. Friend or lover, he always had to be in your life.
