Being a mother is tough. Being a single mother is exhausting. And it’s even more problematical when your four year old daughter decides she wants a daddy and ships you with your handsome but irresponsible hipster neighbor.

Single mother: a parent, not living with a spouse or partner, who has most of the day-to-day responsibilities in raising the child or children.

Hipster: creative young non-traditional person typically in his 20's and 30's  who is an independent thinker and dresses in a trendy fashion.

Three years before...

Noise was filling her ears. The clicking of shoes against the grounds, the yells of patients, nurses, doctors, anyone, to make way and the smooth sound of the patient bed moving across the room. But that wasn’t what she was paying attention to. Rather, it was the pulsing in her stomach, the painful throbbing in her abdomen and the emptiness in her heart that seemed to send her into panic.

Chaerin wanted her boyfriend to be with her at this critical moment. But he had left her at the very moment he had known about the baby. She was alone now.

Chaerin wanted to shout everything she had in her heart, how she was scared to death that the baby was finally coming, how she wasn’t ready for this yet, that she still hadn’t decided what she was going to do once the baby was born. She couldn’t raise her child alone… Anger began to buble through her chest for that man. She loved him to the point to stop her studies to live with him. She gave up her own parents to follow that man. She realized now that they were right. He was a coward. Her heart was shattering.

She was lost. She didn’t know what to do anymore. She watched blindly as it all happened. As the doctor encouraged her to breath, as the nurse kept a comforting hand on her arm and cheered her on.

It had been her dream to find a prince. And she did. But the prince was a selfish one.

At that very moment, a sharp cry pierced through the air. There was happy cheers around the room. The doctor was explaining something to her with a happy smile but she couldn’t seem to hear. The nurse approached her with a grin as she placed a bundle in her arms.

She glanced down slowly. Her dull, empty eyes met a pair of wide, brown eyes.

“It’s a beautiful little girl miss Lee! Did you find a name for her?” the nurse smiled

Chaerin hadn’t even think about it. When she had learnt she was pregnant she had  imagined her and her boyfriend spending their time looking for clothes for the baby, painting the walls of the baby’s bedroom. She had imagined them spending their afternoons looking for a name. But all of this didn’t happen at the end.

She stayed speechless until she heard a melody coming from the outside of the room in the corridor. It was smooth, beautiful but just so sad. It totally evoked what Chaerin was feeling at the same time.

“What’s this song?” she choked out

“It’s a phone ringtone I think. We’ll try to stop it if you…” the doctor started only to be interrupted by Chaerin

“No, don’t stop it. What’s the name of the song?”

“It’s Haru Haru by Bigbang miss.” the nurse stated

She nodded. A choked sob rose to Chaerin's throat as she placed a shaky hand on the child’s cheek, “Her name will be… Haru…”

Haru would experience taking her first steps, having her first birthday. But there would be  no father. Just Chaerin and Haru. One day she would be crying and asking her why she had no father when all her friends did.

Chaerin kept her cheek pressed against her child’s, whispering the same words over and over again as she sobbed, “I’m sorry… Haru…”
