Jongin likes being the middle child. He gets away with things more easily than either of his siblings and doesn't have stellar expectations he needs to live up to. Sometimes, however, Jongin hates being the middle child. This was one of those times.

It had been a long day at school. Jongin's kindergarden class is learning the alphabet and, really, it's not his fault his p's sound like b's. Jongin felt that it was only fair the boy making fun of him get pushed. 

"You could've hurt him, Jongin."

"But he huwt my feelings." The teacher only shook her head and, after making them both apologize to each other, sent them both to time out. 

It only got worse from there. Jongin fell down and scraped his knee when he was playing tag with his friends at the playground. He spilled half of his lunch in the cafeteria because his shoelaces were untied and he didn't know how to do the bunny knot. But the very very worst part was when Jongin's colored pencils broke during art class. It was his favorite class and he had been looking forward to taking the picture home to show off to mommy and daddy. Now ... now he just had a blank sheet of paper with two blue scribbles and Jongin just wanted to cry. So he did.

It's after school now and Jongin is in the car with his daddy. Normally, Jongin looks forward to going home and watching television and playing his big brother's Nintendo 3DS while he's too busy with homework to notice. But today, all Jongin can think of is how his baby brother, Sehun, is probably going to be throwing a tantrum until mommy appeases him - because he can and he's the youngest - of how Tao, his older brother, is probably going to whine to mommy about how hard subtraction is, only stopping when mommy finally sits down next to him and helps him with his homework.

They arrive at their small house and Jongin can already hear Sehun's loud yells from the driveway. Jongin hates being the middle child. He goes on for the rest of the day moppy and sad thinking mommy and dad don't notice anything with baby Sehun and Tao around.

At least that's what Jongin thinks, as he lays curled up in bed. But, of course, Mommy soothes away all the negative when he slides into Jongin's room after telling daddy goodnight. 

"I think I'll sleep with Jongin tonight. You go ahead and sleep, honey."

"Ok Junmyeon. Good night."

"Is it ok if Mommy sleeps with you, Jonginnie?" Of course! Yes! Always yes for mommy! Instead of saying any of that, Jongin turns around and reaches his arms out towards his mommy. Junmyeon easily slides in between the sheets, scooping Jongin into his arms. He pats his son's back soothingly as Jongin tells him about his day at school and how unfair and mean everyone at school is.

"Can't I just stay here with Mommy?" Junmyeon chuckles and pretends to think about it for a minute.

"But I need Jonginnie to keep going to school. Who else will draw me pretty pictures?" 

"I can draw pictures from here," Jongin whines. Junmyeon gently runs his hands through Jongin's hair.

"What can mommy do to make you feel better?" Jongin's eyes instantly brighten up and he doesn't hesitate to ask for a lullaby.

"Mommy's voice is the bestest!"

Lullaby and goodnight

In the sky stars are bright

May the moon's silvery beams

Bring you sweet dreams

Close your eyes now and rest

May these hours be blessed

Til the sky's bright with dawn 

When you wake with a yawn

Lullaby and good night

You are mother's delight

I'll protect you from harm.

Really, Jongin thinks as he starts to drift into dreamland, it's not so bad being the middle child when he's laying in his mommy's warm embrace as he sings him to sleep. Jongin really likes being the middle child.
