High School Jerk
Description
The bell rang which meant five minutes until I needed to be in the gym. I sat on the bench next to my locker and tied my pink Reeboks as the girls around me changed into their P.E. uniforms and talked about their weekend.
“Two minutes ladies!” My gym teacher yelled from her office around the corner.
I tied up my hair in a pony tail and took a drink from the water fountain before making my way into the gym.
“Olivia!” I heard to my left.
My friend Maya sat on the bleachers and flailed her arms around to get my attention.
I laughed and took my seat next to her.
“How was your weekend? Did you ever-“
Suddenly I felt something hit the back of my head. I felt my ponytail and pulled a soggy ball of paper out from my hair. “That is disgusting!” I yelled while flicking it off of my finger. I turned around and saw three boys laughing quietly at the top of the bleachers.
Just before Mrs. Jordan walked into the gym I saw the one with brown hair slide a straw into his sock.
I shook my head and turned to Mrs. Jordan who began to explain today’s activity.
“Dodgeball.”
A hushed celebration came from most of the class.
“I’ll be picking your teams and-“
A flood of no’s and boo’s came from the class.
“Boys against girls!”
I turned around again and saw that it was the brown haired guy again.
Mrs. Jordan tilted her head while holding her palms up as if to wait for a reaction to the idea.
“If that happens of course we’ll lose,” Maya whispered, “Do you see the girls in this class?”
I looked at some of the girls sitting in front of me.
Two of them were fixing their makeup in a compact mirror, one was brushing her hair, and another was chewing her nails.
I looked to the boys behind me again.
They were high-fiving and bumping fists.
“Boys against girls it is! Boys, left. Girls, right!” Mrs. Jordan shouted and then blew her whistle.
Almost all of the boys stampeded off of the bleachers onto the court.
“Huh?” The girl brushing her hair looked around in confusion as the air from the boys movement pushed her hair over her face.
“We are done for.” Maya laughed.
I walked to the girl’s side of the court and looked at the boys across from us.
The girl’s side had me, Maya, the make-up artists, the hair dresser, the nail chewer, and three other rather athletic girls. I'm pretty sure one of then is on the soccer team. The boy’s side had the football twins, the weight lifters, the track stars, and then the three boys who had been laughing about the spit ball they planted in my hair.
“Everybody ready?” Mrs. Jordan shouted as she raised her hand at the center of the court.
All of the girls and boys lined up on their respective side. Some of the girls looked like they had no idea what was going on while all of the boys were ready to run, especially the track stars.
Mrs. Jordan's whistle blew and I knew there would be no way I could make it to the center to get a ball. Even if I did I would be pelted by the boys anyway.
All of the girls stayed back leaving the boys to get each of the balls that were set up on the court.
The brown haired boy snickered as he looked at his friends.
It was pitiful. The entire girl’s side looked empty because everyone stood back so far.
The boys approached the center line all at once and then began throwing balls like it was their job.
The make-up artists were out first along with one of the athletic girls who tried to catch a throw.
The only way I could survive this gym period was if I were to dodge everything and whenever I threw the ball I practically rolled it there so there would be no chance it would get caught.
Eventually the only people left on the girls side were me, an athletic girl, and the nail biter who was particularly good at dodging, even from multiple missiles.
“Come on girls, get in there!” Mrs. Jordan clapped from the side line.
The athletic girl picked up a ball from our side and flung it right into the middle of the boy’s side.
And the brown haired boy caught it.
“That’s all right, that’s all right.” Mrs. Jordan clapped again.
I glanced at the last girl behind me.
Her knees wobbled as she stood as close to the boundary line as she could.
Then everything went black.
***Jimin’s POV***
“This is too easy.” Namjoon smiled as he caught one of the buff girl’s throws.
She stomped her feet on the floor and walked to the sideline that was nearly full.
“That’s all right, that’s all right.” The teacher shouted.
“She’s all yours.” Namjoon handed me the ball and before I was even fully looking at my target, the ball was flying from my hand.
“Ah!”
“!”
The girl who had been standing in the middle was now flat on the ground.
All of the girls and the teacher ran to her.
One of them, who had been sitting next to her on the bleachers, lifted her head onto her lap.
“Olivia!” The girl shouted.
“.” I turned around and yanked my hair as I saw blood begin dripping from her nose.
“Dude, you broke her nose.” Namjoon nudged.
“Shut up.” I walked closer to her as her eyes began to open.
All of the girls glared at me.
“I-I’m sorry?” I rubbed my neck and shrugged.
“Jimin. Go get Olivia some more tissues,” the teacher demanded as she pulled a handkerchief from her pocket and held it to Olivia’s nose, “and her to the nurse’s office."
The girls began to help Olivia to stand as I ran into the boy’s bathroom. I practically pulled out all of the paper towels from the metal container that hung on the wall.
“Can you walk?” Her friend asked her as she pulled some of the paper towels out of my arms for her friend.
She nodded and held the tissues to her nose.
The handkerchief was soaked red.
***Olivia’s POV***
“I… am so sorry Olivia. I-“
I glared up at him. “Are you apologizing for making my nose bleed or for spitting a wet piece of paper into my hair?”
“Both?” Jimin tried to smile as he shrugged again.
“Uhg.” I began to walk out of the gym building toward the nurse’s office.
“I really am sorry. I didn’t know you were going to look away. I wouldn’t have thrown it at you if I knew you weren’t looking.” He explained as he walked beside me.
“Why do we play dodgeball? It is a ed up game anyway. And boys against girls? Did you see those girls!? Most of them are don’t even pay attention or participate when we are just running the mile. You can’t expect us to have a chance against all of you!”
He was silent.
I sighed. “I’m sorry. I’m not mad at you. I’m just, well… tired of you.” I laughed at his confused expression. I stopped outside of the nurse’s office with the bloody tissue still to my nose. “Why are you such a jerk?” I stared at him.
He didn’t move. “I-“
“Don’t. Thank you for walking me here.” I turned around and walked into the nurse’s office where I was given an ice pack and tampons to shove up my nose while I waited for the bleeding to stop.
Twenty minutes later my nose had completely stopped bleeding and I had my face cleaned up.
“It’s still third period so take this note to your gym teacher.”
I took the pink square and nodded as I held the mushy blue ice pack to my nose. “Thank you.” I said as I left and I began to walk back to the gym.
***Jimin’s POV***
Class was almost over and since we were allowed to change back into our clothes early, Heosok, Namjoon, and I waited by the gym doors for the bell to ring.
“Man, I wish that was being recorded. That could have killed her! She hit the floor so hard!” Hoseok asked.
“Did she even say anything to you earlier?” Namjoon fixed his earbuds into his ears as we waited.
“She asked why I was a jerk.” I looked down at my lap.
“Woah, woah, woah. Don’t start crying.” Namjoon pushed me and laughed.
“I’m not going to cry!”
“Well that is good to know.” Olivia said as she walked through the doors while holding a blue square thing to her face.
I stood up and jogged to her.
“Are you okay?”
Olivia stopped abruptly and lowered the blue thing she was holding.
“Do I look okay?”
There was a light bruise on the bridge of her small nose and a darker blueish patch under her left eye that caused her eye to be slightly more closed than the other.
“I am so sorry-“
“I know-“
“No really!” I took her arm.
She threw my hand off.
“Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh!” I heard my friends behind me.
“I’m really sorry. Is there anything I can do? I’ll buy you good make-up? Not that you need it. But like, for your…” I motioned toward my eye.
“I’m fine.” She lifted the blue square to her face again.
I stepped in front of her just before she was about to enter the girl’s locker room.
“Can I please just pay for your lunch or something?” I watched as she walked around me and opened the door to the locker room.
“Just… hold on.”
The door closed.
“What are you doing, man?” Hoseok shouted.
The lunch bell rang and Hoseok and Namjoon booked it toward the cafeteria.
All of the girls who had been in the locker room were now leaving and each gave me an intense glare. Olivia was the last one out.
***Olivia’s POV – a few minutes in the past***
“Are you okay?” Maya asked as I entered the locker room. She followed me to my locker which was near the back.
“I’m fine.” I set down the ice pack and opened my locker to get my clothes.
“Holy ! Your eye! Did he even say anything?!” She asked as I changed into my normal clothes.
“He said he was sorry except when I asked why he is such a jerk he didn’t have an answer.”
“Wow… feisty…”
“And then he had the nerve to ask if he could buy my lunch!?”
“Woah girl! Take advantage of that! Do you know what today is?” Maya was silent for a second, but when I didn’t answer she continued. “Today is fresh cookie day. Do you know how many cookies you could get if he was buying them for you?”
“I don’t need that many cookies-“
“But you said yourself he is a jerk.” Maya stood and took my shoulders in her hands. “He spit a gross wad of paper into your hair… how are you going to make him pay?”
***Present***
“So, lunch?” I asked as I left the locker room. I’m surprised he actually waited for me. On fresh cookie day usually everyone is running out of here.
“R-really? Yeah, sure!” Jimin nodded quickly.
He walked beside me as I made my way to the cafeteria. Everyone was looking at me either because they saw the large blue ice pack or the bruises underneath it.
“Hey! What are you looking at?!” Jimin shouted to a couple of boys who were pointing and laughing. They immediately stopped.
“Th-thanks…” I said quietly as I entered the cafeteria. The smell of cookies was overwhelming that it almost hurt to smell so hard. “Ah!”
“What happened?” Jimin stopped.
“I smelled too hard.” I laughed a little.
“Well… don’t smell then.” He walked past me and got in the shortest line. “What do you want?” He asked as he got his wallet out.
“What are you doing?”
“I’m going to give you money?”
“No. You said you would get me lunch. That means you hold it, you buy it, you carry it.”
Jimin looked at me and laughed as he shook his head. “Fine.”
The line moved and I told Jimin that I wanted a chicken sandwich with lettuce, tomato, mayo, and onions. Then I told him I wanted white milk and ten cookies.
“Ten cookies! That’s five dollars!”
I pretended to pout as I pointed at my black eye.
“Uuhg!” He took ten cookies onto my tray.
We waited in the cashier line and when it was time to pay he payed two dollars for his lunch and seven dollars for mine.
“You better enjoy those cookies.” He said as he lifted both of our trays. “Where do you eat?”
“Uhhmm. Let’s eat on the grass.”
“Us?”
I didn’t answer and continued to walk into the field next to the lunch tables. I sat on the ground and Jimin slowly sat across from me.
He handed me my tray and I said thank you.
We began to eat silently, but after I had finished half of my chicken sandwich Jimin asked a question.
“Do you really think I’m a jerk?”
I continued chewing as I thought of what to say. “Well… Doesn’t it seem like a jerkish thing to spit as soggy ball into somebody’s hair? Or steal my pencils in math? Or snicker at girls when they leave for the bathroom with their purses? Or find it amusing to gang up on females who you know you have the power over? Hm?” I was panting now.
Jimin stared at me with wide eyes. He set down his pizza slice and put his tray on the grass. “Okay. I am a jerk. I’m sorry. I do those things to fit in. I admit it. If I didn’t Heosok and Namjoon and-“
“Do you really think those people matter? Do you think that they really care about you?”
He was quiet.
I sighed and put five cookies on his tray and I put his tray back onto his lap. “You don’t have to act that way to fit in. You aren’t acting that way now and look what happened? You have a girl giving you cookies! Sounds pretty good to me!”
“That I paid for-“
“You get the point. Stop being an and you will get friends that actually care about you and enjoy your presence.”
“Do you enjoy my pr-“
“Olivia! There you are! I’ve been looking everywhere for you! Why are you sitting out here?” Maya eyed Jimin.
“I just wanted to set this kid straight.” I laughed at pushed Jimin who seemed utterly confused.
“Well…” Maya looked at Jimin who was slightly smiling at my comment. “I guess I’ll just join you.”
I began to finish my sandwich as Maya took a couple of my cookies.
“So… you spitball often?”
“Maya.” I said with a mouth full of food.
“I’m sorry I did that. I already apologized to Olivia-“
“Oh. Okay.” Maya took a drink of her blue poweraid. “What about the other times-“
“Maya, can we just move on? We have a new friend… right?” I turned to Jimin.
He shrugged.
“Well… this will be interesting…” Maya sighed and shoved a cookie into .
***1 Year Later***
“Jiminah~” Maya whined.
“Wow. I have never seen such a lazy person.” He laughed and tossed a blanket onto her head.
“Much better.” Maya snuggled into her pile of pillows.
“Come on, now. That wasn’t very nice.” I laughed and sat down next to Maya. “Oh! Get the popcorn too!”
“Wow! Anything else my queens?”
“You can continue to call us your queens.” Maya laughed.
Jimin brought the popcorn and turned off the light before joining us on our pillow pile on the floor.
“So what is this one?” He asked as he handed Maya the popcorn.
“The Strangers.”
“Oh these scary movie nights are the best. I get to enjoy a nice movie and I get to see you both pee your pants.”
“You enjoy watching girls pee their pants?” Maya laughed, “Jimin… that is gross.”
I laughed and pressed play to the DVD. I pulled my a pillow into my lap to cover most of my face.
The movie started and it was like every other movie night we had. Jimin laughed at all of the scary parts while Maya and I screamed our heads off. But this time as the movie progressed, it was different.
Suddenly I felt Jimin’s hand on mine.
“Woah there.” I pulled my hand away.
“Shh!” He said and held my hand again.
I looked to Maya who was captivated by the scene.
“What are you-“
“Shh!” Jimin winced and gripped my hand tighter.
I smirked.
He was scared.
Suddenly the movie was nothing and all I could focus on was Jimin’s reactions to the scary scenes. Every other minute he was squeezing my hand or shuffling under his blanket.
“Holy !” He shouted.
“Ah!!” Maya screamed.
I just laughed and patted Jimin on the head.
About a half an hour later I hopped up from the blankets and pillows and I the lights.
“That one was terrifying.” Maya whispered as she pulled her blanket up to her eyes.
“Nahh…” Jimin laughed.
“What? Are you kidding?” I laughed at Jimin who blushed.
He quickly put his fingers to his lips before Maya could see.
“You have to be kidding!” Maya responded to my accusation. “I nearly peed myself, but I held it in so you wouldn’t get any pleasure from it ya weirdo.” Maya laughed and threw a pillow at Jimin’s face.
Suddenly Maya’s phone was ringing. She sprang up to answer it.
“You are such a liar.” I whispered as Maya talked in the other room.
“I have to keep my image.” He whispered back.
“Please. You wore a speedo to my birthday party.”
Jimin laughed as Maya re-entered the room.
“Looks like the party is over. Mom needs me to babysit.” She said as she found her pillows that she had brought to the mound we had on the floor.
“What! We’ve only watched one movie! We have the whole night! This is what we do!” I stood.
“I know, but it is my mom’s first date since the divorce and it’s really important to her. The babysitter was going to watch Tina and her friend’s, but she got the flu.”
“So you have to leave?” Jimin stood.
“Wow. Don’t sound so excited!”
Jimin looked away quickly.
Maya lifted her bag onto her shoulder. “I’m outie.”
“Bye, Maya… drive safe.”
“Bye bye.” Jimin waved as she walked to her car that was parked on the street in front of his house.
She drove away and then everything was silent.
“So… we have more movies… or if you want to go too, that is fine.” Jimin shrugged.
“Why does crap always have to happen when movie night is at your house. Last time Maya had to leave, two times before that she couldn’t make it… It’s like…” I stopped mid sentence as I realized what had been going on. I looked to Jimin who seemed to not have realized yet.
“Well, we still have some scary ones and some comedies…” Jimin looked toward the stack of DVD’s on the ground.
“Mmmmm.. okay. I told my mom I was going to be out late anyway. Might as well.” I sat back down and pulled out my phone to text Maya as Jimin put in another movie.
[Me: HOW DARE YOU]
[Maya: Took you long enough -_-;;]
[Me: You know I don’t like him like that!]
Jimin turned to me and I dropped my phone into my lap. “Another scary one?”
“How about a funny one. I’m going to have nightmares if we keep watching terrifying movies.”
“Got it.”
[Maya: HE likes you like that though!]
[Me: No??]
[Maya: Right now, lean on him and tell him he smells nice. Watch how he reacts...]
Jimin was now sitting next to me. “Anchorman 2 it is.” He smiled and pulled his blanket over his legs.
I sighed and leaned my head onto his shoulder and inhaled. He actually did smell good. I sat up. “You smell good.”
His face went red.
Crap.
[Me: Nothing happened]
[Maya: You can keep lying to yourself or you can get something going. You cannot deny his hotness-
“Who are you texting?” Jimin looked over toward my phone.
I quickly locked the screen making it black. “Maya was just texting me saying she made it home.” I lied.
“Oh. Well put that away. I’ve heard good things about this movie.”
Jimin was right. This Anchorman was possibly even better than the first one. It was probably good that Maya went home. She doesn’t like stupid humor like this.
“Hey Jimin. Can you hand me that pillow.” I asked as I pointed to one right in front of me.
“Why can’t you just grab-“
“I’m bliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiind.” I shouted.
Jimin busted out laughing. He fell over onto my lap and held his stomach.
“Woah, what is that!” I smacked his face as if I could not see.
“Aaaahahahahah!” Jimin laughed even louder as I rubbed my hand across his face.
“Jiminah. What large eyes you have.” I said as I poked at his eyes.
“Ah! Olivia!” Jimin rolled off of my lap and I continued to smack him.
“Hey Jiminah.”
“What?” He laughed.
“Could you actually really get me that pillow?”
“But you can, it’s right th-“
Before he could finish his sentence I had the pillow in my hand and it was making contact with his face.
“Hmm.. this seems familiar… at least you won’t get bruises from a pillow.”
“Oh my gosh that was a year ago.”
“Ya know.. it’s still kind of hurts.”
“Oh my gosh, come here then.” Jimin suddenly took my cheeks, pulled my face closed to his, and he quickly kissed my nose and my left eye. Then slowly released me. “…there…” He said quickly.
I stared at him as I felt my face burning like it had when the dodgeball hit my face. It almost felt like my nose was bleeding too-
“Olivia!” Jimin stood up and ran out of the room. He was back before I could realize what happened. He pushed the tissues to my nose.
“You know this is your fault right.”
“I know, I know. You get bloody noses all the time since I hit you in the face with a dodgeball.” Jimin mocked me.
“At least they don’t last long.” I took the tissues from his fingers and used them to wipe my nose clean. “Tahdah.” I said holding the bloody tissues out to him.
“You can throw those away.”
“But Jiminah, I’m bliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiind.”
Jimin laughed. “Just for that I will throw them away for you.”
A few second later he was back and the credits of the movie were rolling.
“Well we missed that whole thing.” Jimin laughed as he hit eject on his DVD player.
Suddenly my phone lit up.
[Maya: make a move yet?]
“Maya again?” Jimin asked.
“Yeah… she’s wondering if we are having a good time alone.” I lied, but I wanted to see how he would react.
“Oh… well what kind of time do you think we are having?” He turned the question onto me.
“Uhm… a fun one?”
Jimin laughed and turned off the TV.
“I don’t have any other new funny movies. I was sort of banking of scaring Maya tonight.” Jimin say back down next to me.
“So, what now? Should I go?”
“No!”
I quickly turned to him.
“We can just talk if you want.” He shrugged.
I sighed and rested down on the pillows. “Are you excited for summer?” I asked as I shifted the pillows underneath me to accommodate for my chest.
“You know, I’m actually not. Since I’ve become friends with you and Maya, I feel lonely during the summer.”
“Awe, poor Jimin.” I laughed and moved on my side.
“Well you visit family out of state and Maya doesn’t like me enough to hang out with me without you here.”
“You have other friend’s though.. that Namjoon guy seems to be getting his act together?”
“They are all still s.” Jimin sighed.
My phone buzzed and Jimin picked it up.
“Here you-“
“No!” I swiped it away.
“Go….” Jimin smirked.
“You aren’t texting Maya, aren’t you.” He started to move toward me slowly.
I glanced at the text before my screen when black.
[Maya: If you don’t at least kiss him I’m going to release my wrath on you]
“I am!” I scooted away.
“Then why did you not want me to see the text? Is it a guy? Do you like somebody?” He smirked as he tried to take my phone.
I smirked as I slid it into my bra. “Hah.”
Jimin sighed and sat back in his spot.
“So who is he?” He asked.
“He’s nobody.”
“So you are texting a guy!”
“I mean there is nobody!”
“Come on, just tell me about him… is he better looking than me?”
I was silent.
“Yes? No?”
I began to blush.
“Is he taller than me?” Jimin slammed his fist on his knee.
“Well…” I said quietly.
“I bet he is a better dancer, right?” Jimin looked at me. His worry almost looked real. He was a jokester, but this seemed different.
“To be honest… Maya is trying to set us up.”
Jimin was quiet.
I’ve always been really honest with Jimin. It is something that I really cherish about our friendship.
“W-why would she do that?” Jimin crossed his arms.
I smiled. “She said you like me. She’s been bailing on movie night at your house these past few times so we could be alone… I only noticed this today.”
“Hm.” He hummed quietly. He sat very still as he looked at the pillow on his lap.
I sighed. He wasn’t going to talk until I said something. “And I guess you are a nice guy.”
His head immediately lifted and his posture completely changed.
“And you do actually smell really nice.” I laughed which caused his shoulders to relax.
“Well thank you.” He smiled and brushed his shoulder off.
“And you are a dork.”
He pretended to pout.
“But I like that.” I smiled which caused him to look down.
“So what are you going to tell Maya?”
“What do you mean?”
“Well she wants us to hook up-“
I raised my eyebrow at him.
“I mean “get together”. Maybe you can tell her we kissed?”
I laughed. “How about I tell her that we talked all night and got to get to know each other really well.”
“That sounds like a plan.”
“And that I kissed your cheek.” I quickly leaned forward and planted one on his cheek bone.
He sighed and laughed at the same time. “Yeah.” His voice cracked. “That is good too.”
[there might be another one of these :)]
