Remember Nothing

To forget yourself is to be happy

Every day she tried to talk to the one girl who never shared her secrets. Every day that same girl would seat in the same position. Her knees bent and with her arms crossing in front of them. She would stay in the same chair by the window. Looking outside as if searching for something that she had missed. She looked to the people inside the same room as her. Looking at them as if they were...crazy, which was likely. She had been in this mental facility for quite sometime. She had made attempt on her life four times in 2 years she had been here. And yet...that doctor would never give up on her. Every day she would be there for her trying to talk to her.

Foreword

The rays of the sunlight had long since started to shine through her window. And just as that she had long since been awake. She just laid down and looked at the ceiling. Her face was just expressionless. Her mind was empty of any thoughts, the truth is that, whatever was in her mind that she would think of...she just wanted to forget, she wanted to forget everything and everyone, even herself. She remembers sometimes of people who usually come here. Probably her family, she sometimes guesses. She also remembers that there was a girl who came to visit her before, but she stopped at some point.

She remembers that everytime she looked at that girl her heart would weight...and her eyes would feel like tearing up. She doesn't know the reason, and not that it matters anymore, she also has forgotten the face of that girl. She sometimes hear a voice, calling a name. Maybe it's her name, she doesn't know. She tends to put aside that voice aswell.
At night, she has dreams, of people and places she doesn't remember. She tries to, but she doesn't know if she wants to.

And then there's her. She comes to her everyday, she tries to talk to her. This doctor...she's different, others look at her as if she is a lost cause but not this one, this one looks at her as if she has hope. She can see hope in her eyes if she looks really deeply.
She like looking through the window, because on the garden on top of the highest tree is a bird house, a little wooden bird house that someone might've build years ago. Still, the birds still live there. She likes to watch them as they fly in and out, much like family. There's even little ones. But apart from everything else in the room she usually spends her time, with...the crazy people, that doctor actually managed to get her attention. She doesn't know if she did it on purpose or if it was just some kind of experiment. But one day she came to work in a yellow jacket. And that was when she caught her attention actually. She turned around from the window to look at her.

The girl smiled. In her face was this little expression of victory as if she had just crossed some kind of great abyss between the two of them. She still looked at the window after a while. She would want to forget her too, she just wanted to forget, nothing else.
She felt a hand place itself on her forearm, she shook it away and glared the girl.
The doctor got up and left. And then, for the next few or maybe hundreds of days, she doesn't actually keep count, that doctor continued to come, she continued to talk to her, to tell her things about herself, to ask her questions that she knew she would never answer. She was...crazy?

And everyday that she came, she just continued to stare at her bird house, and everyday she just continued to talk.
There was really no point, why was she doing this? Why? Why? Why?

The more times she came to talk to her, the more that question bounced around in her mind.
What did she see in her? Why was she talking to her? What was the reason?

Too bad that girl talked so much but she would never receive any answers.

-"Why do you talk so much to her?" A tall girl told the doctor with a yellow jacket.

-"Well, I do it because, she understands us, she just can't speak" She answered.

-"Yeah, when one suffers from expressive aphasia one tends not to be able to speak" She said sarcastically.

-"Stop being stupid" She answered as she hit her on the shoulder.

Jessica Jung was a young doctor in the field of psychiatry, she had always felt like this was what she loved. To understand the human psyche. To understand those who sometimes can't or don't wish to be understood. Depending on the case...there were those who were actually to much for her. She enjoyed the ones who actually had come in terms with their condition. Many of them helped by her. The director of the instituition respected her very much for all she had done.

Then there was that patient.
The patient she wanted to save, but seemed like she didn't want to be saved.
Not very much was known about her in here. Actually, nobody knew anything about her, she had just been abandoned her by her family and hasn't spoke a word to anyone since. She had attempted suicide four times over the past 2 years.

Kim Taeyeon. Her name was known because it was in her file. Her condition was...unclear since she actually didn't show symptoms of any serious mental condition other than a depression and her aphasia.
Aphasia is the inability to speak, in Taeyeon's case she suffered from Expressive Aphasia, which is the inability for one to express himself.

Basically, she understood what everyone said, she could read, she knew the words with which to speak but she didn't talk.
She just...went mute. The reason was of course unknown since she never spoke. Her family had stopped visiting her since a year ago. And...there was a girl who stopped visiting even earlier than that.

Now, Taeyeon was just seemingly an empty shell, she just looked through a window all day long.

Still Jessica hadn't given up on her, she came to talk to her. Everyday, she also brought her gifts sometimes, on white day, valentines day, christmas and even new year.

Jessica was also a person without family. Not that they were dead, they were in the US together with her little sister Krystal. She was single and lived alone, so...she actually wasn't troubled at all by coming to see Taeyeon everyday. She even spent christmas with her once. Not that there was much talking done but, she enjoyed it.

Although Taeyeon didn't speak, she sometimes caught the ocasional smile, it was tiny, but she noticed it.

Today was just another day

-"Hey" Jessica said as she sat across Taeyeon. Taeyeon sat with her legs on top of the chair with her knees bent and her arms crossed in front. Her chin was supported by her knees and she looked to the same place where she had always looked.

-"I came to talk to you...again" Jessica said.

-"Listen, if you behave, I might be able to take you out of here, but...you have to promise me" Jessica said.

Taeyeon was as expressionless as she ever was. Why would she want to get out of here? This window, the garden, the distant view of the city and that poor bird house had been the only things she had known. Why would she get out?

-"C'mon, give me something...I've talked to you for so long, you probably know all about my life right now" Jessica said.

-"Hell you even know me better than I do myself" She said.

True, Jessica had told Taeyeon countless stories of her life and countless things that had happened to her. Hell, she even told her about her boyfriends and girlfriends as strange as that sounded in Taeyeon's empty mind.

-"C'mon, talk to me...please" Jessica said as she looked at the girl.

-"Oh...wait, you can't speak, then write" Jessica said as she put a note pad in front of the small table separating them.

Taeyeon turned her attention from the outside to Jessica. She eyed her with an expressionless face and turned her head sideways.
She looked at the notepad.
She grabbed it and the pen. She wrote something and turned it to Jessica.
Jessica's eyes opened in surprise. She was so happy, it was like...the second time she had shown her any response.

Jessica grabbed the notepad and as soon as she did, her hopes went down the drain...

"They say when you die, everyone will remember you" It read.

"I want to help you" Jessica wrote and showed her.

"I want to forget".

"I can help you forget" Jessica wrote.

"Why would you help me?"

"Because it's my duty"

"Don't help me, help them" One line read with an arrow drawn towards the room.

-"I'M NOTHING" It was written in capital letters.

Jessica looked at the paper in front of her, she looked at Taeyeon who was now simply looking at the floor.

"Forget" Taeyeon wrote on the corner of the sheet.

"Save" Jessica wrote bellow.
