Chapter 3

Goodbye Autumn

Chapter 3

The person, who had fallen on top of me, finally rolled over to the pavement and stood up. I was just about to stand up myself, but he held a hand out to me, surprising me a little by his actions. Without thinking much, I decided that I would grab onto his hands and he helped me up to my feet. After I patted away the sand from my clothes, I looked over at him and saw that he was staring at me awkwardly. I pressed my lips together, trying to figure out what to say to him because this was the first time that I've ever actually got to see him up this close; this made me look him up down. I think he noticed because when I looked back up at him, he started to blush and scratch the back of his neck.

"Oh... I'm... I'm sorry. That was rude of me." I bit my lip and looked away from him. "I didn't mean to look at you like that."

"No, it's okay..." He said as he stopped scratching his neck. "Are... Are you okay?"

I nodded my head and bent down to pick up my backpack and the items that had fallen out from it.

"Sorry... I wasn't looking." His voice was barely audible.

"No, it's okay." I said as I stood back up, but I froze half way when I saw that his knee was bleeding. "You're bleeding."

"Oh... It's okay." He waved his hands.

"No..." I dug through my bag and pulled out a napkin and bent down to his knee level. "Let me clean it up for you so it doesn't get infected." Just as I was about to clean it, he moved his leg. "Oh... Maybe... Maybe I shouldn't do this." I stood up and held the napkin to him. "Sorry. I wasn't thinking. I shouldn't have approached you like that."

He looked at me hesitantly before he grabbed the napkin from my hands and bent down to wipe his knee. While he was doing so, I dug into my bag again to look for a bandaid. When I found it, I bent down to get a closer look at what he was doing and waited until he looked up so I could hand it to him.

"Does it hurt?" I asked only because there was silence between us.

He looked up at me, causing me to freeze in place because our faces were near one another's. I don't know how long we were like that for, but it did feel like we were staring at each other for the longest time until I finally took the inititive to look away and stand up. He straightened up and scrunched the napkin into his hands. Without looking at him, I held the bandaid out to him. I was about to speak, but he took the bandaid from my hand and ripped it open before placing it onto his wound that was now a little more cleaned up than before.

"Thank you..." He said before placing the garbage into his pocket. "Again, I'm sorry for running into you."

I was just about to say something, but he got onto his skateboard that was beside him and strolled away from me. It was weird that he was giving me this feeling of how he wanted to get away from me and end our conversation as soon as possible. Did he not like me or didn't want to be around me? There was something about his aura that really attracted me to him and I had to find out why.

While I was sitting around in class, I couldn't help but think about that same person I had bumped into yesterday. What was his name again? That bothered me the most... He was different from all of the other people that I've ever encountered in my life time. I have seen him around throughout my whole high school years, but this was the first year that I've actually got to see him up close and have a conversation, if you would call it, with him. He showed me a cold side; one where he didn't even seem interested. But he showed me that he had a mysterious side and that's what made me really curious about him. He barely smiles and the only time I had witnessed that was yesterday, when he was with his group of friends. Even yesterday, he barely smiled. I mean, I guess there really was no reason to smile, but I still wanted to see it.

When lunch came around, I quickly ran to the cafeteria. I got to the doors of the cafeteria and looked around to see if Ji Min and Jae Kyung were around. My eyes roamed around the lunch room quickly, but I couldn't even find them in the crowd. My eyes were about to give up but then they suddenly landed on someone. That someone was the one that I've been talking about. I seriously need to figure out what his name is so I could actually have proper thoughts about him and so I would stop calling him "someone" or "he" only.

"You look lost."

I turned around and saw Seung Ho standing behind me with a smile. "Seung Ho, hi!"

"I'm glad you're happy to see me!" He laughed. "Should we go get some food and sit down?"

I nodded my head and followed behind him, but my eyes were still on that "someone". I was about to turn around and pry my eyes away from him, but I accidentally bumped into Seung Ho in front of me.

"Are you okay?" He asked ruffling my hair. "Pay attention to where you're going."

"Sorry..." I scratched the back of my head awkwardly.

After Seung Ho and I got our lunches, we went to sit at our regular table. Since Ji Min and Jae Kyung still weren't here yet and it was just me and Seung Ho, he tried his best to make conversation with me. I was trying really hard to give him good replies, but my eyes couldn't help but keep staring off into space or to look at that "someone" who was sitting with his friends. Not once did he smile yet and it really bothered me. How does one not smile throughout almost an hour and during lunch? Was that even possible? Well, I guess it would be since "he" was doing it right now.

"Who are you looking at?"

I looked up and saw Ji Min and Jae Kyung sitting across from me and Seung Ho. Ji Min was the one who had asked me the question, but Jae Kyung looked as if she was the one who intending it.

"Who is that?" Jae Kyung asked since she was looking over at who I was staring at.

"What? You're looking over at another guy while you're next to me?" Seung Ho pouted at me.

"No, no! I wasn't looking at anyone." I waved my hands in front of me. "I was just staring into space."

Okay, so half was the truth.

"That's Kim Jong Dae, if you were wondering..." Ji Min commented as if he wasn't actually part of the conversation. "But he goes by the name of Chen."

"Che-Chen?" I bit my lip and looked over at him. "How did you know that was his name?"

"He's been in the same homeroom with me for the past four years now." Ji Min shrugged and then raised his eyebrow at me. "Why are you suddenly curious about him?"

"I'm not." I rolled my eyes at Ji Min. "I only asked one question. Besides, I've just wanted to know who he was."

"The guy barely talks." Ji Min said plainly. "He's quiet and only speaks if the teacher picks on him. I don't know how those four even communicate."

"Why?" Jae Kyung asked. "Are the other three mute or something?"

"No, they're not mute. It's just that they're quiet. They barely speak as well."Ji Min shook his head slowly. "But the thing is, they're really smart. I've peeked over at their scores after we take pop quizzes and they always ace them."

"That's because some people are dedicated students." I shrugged.

"No, it doesn't even have to do anything with that! Half the questions that are on our pop quizzes have nothing to do with what we're learning about!" Ji Min protested. "I've studied and looked over my notes plenty of times, but they're never on our pop quizzes. Those four... They're genius'!"

"What else do you know about them?" Seung Ho asked. "I've never seen them in my life before."

"Seung Ho... One of them is in our Physics class..." Ji Min pointed to a baby-faced guy sitting across from Chen.

"Really? I've never noticed him before." Seung Ho shrugged, as if he cared.

"His name is Kim Min Seok, but he goes by the name of Xiu Min." Ji Min added, even though it seemed like he knew that Seung Ho wasn't interested.

"Wait. Are Chen and Xiu Min... Korean?" Jae Kyung asked shaking her head. "I'm confused. Why do they have Korean names and Chinese names?"

"You see the other two? They're both Chinese and are from China; they're transfers." Ji Min said pointing to them. "The one next to Chen is Zhang Yi Xing, but he goes by the name of Lay and the one next to Xiu Min is Lu Han. His surname is Lu, but he likes to use his whole name and goes by Lu Han."

"Do you talk to them?" I raised my eyebrow, confused to how he knew so much about them.

"No, I just know a lot about everyone." He shrugged, as if this was normal, which it wasn't.

"Sorry guys." We all turned and looked over at Seung Ho, who was looking at his phone. "I have to go. I guess some of my friends need help with some Stat problems in the library. I'll see you guys later."

"Bye!" Ji Min waved without even looking.

"I'll see you later, Ga Eul." Seung Ho smiled at me before leaving our table.

"He seemed a little jealous the whole time we talked about Chen and his friends." Jae Kyung sipped her juice. "His eyes were wandering back and forth to you and Chen."

"I don't even know Chen." I shrugged. "There's nothing for him to worry about."

"Why did we bring them up again?" Jae Kyung asked looking confused. "Oh wait. That's right. It was because you were staring at him."

"I ran into him yesterday when I went boarding at the beach." I said without much thought.

"Yah." Ji Min slammed his hand onto the lunch table lightly, causing a few heads to turn around and look at us. "What did we say about you and boarding?"

"I wasn't doing much. I just wanted to get out a little." I shrugged. "I didn't want to be stuck inside the house since my dad wasn't home yet."

"You have to be careful when you're out alone like that." Ji Min shook his head at me.

"Ji Min, don't treat her like she's five years old." Jae Kyung grabbed Ji Min's biceps. "We can't stop her from doing what she wants to do."

"I was just only worrying about her health." Ji Min looked away to avoid any eye contact with me. "Seriously."

"Thanks Ji Min, I really appreciate it." I said a little dull.

When school was out, the front of the school was always busy due to students talking with friends and still hanging out around together with their circles. I slowly made my way out to the front where Ji Min and Jae Kyung were and could see them talking by the gates flirting with each other like a normal couple would and it made me smile suddenly. As I was making my way over, I felt a throbbing pain inside of my chest and it became harder for me to breathe. I was have a heart attack. I froze in place and dug into my backpack quickly to look for my medicine that I had placed in there yesterday.

I started to freak out when I realized that my bottle wasn't in there. Just to make sure, I turned my backpack upside down until all of my items had fallen out onto the dirt ground. I pushed everything around, looking to make sure that I wasn't blind and that I was just missing it when it was actually there. I could hear footsteps coming closer. I didn't bother to look up because my body was too weak now and my breathing became even slower. The throbbing in my chest became heavier and stronger and I felt like there was an elephant slowly stepping on top of me.

"Are you okay?"

The words that I had just heard were familiar, but I knew it wasn't the person I thought it'd be. I looked up and saw someone bent down in front of me. I was confused and I didn't know if I was hallucinating or not because things like this often happened when I was going through a heart attack.

"Hey... Hey..." He waved his hands in front of me, but my conscious was fighting with me. "Choi Ga Eul..."

Just when I thought that I could beat my own conscious at its game, I lost and everything around me turned black.
