December 18, 1994

“How dare you cheat on me?!??!?” Jinah sounded like she was to erupt.

“It was an accident!” Minjeong replied with a sound of anger and annoyance.

“An accident??!? How dare you tell me it was all an accident? In a few more months, you’ll have a daughter from somebody else! Tell me how should I react about it? I’m your legal wife and you cheated on me!” Jinah said painfully, her heart was breaking into pieces.

“I’m sorry….. I didn’t mean to—“ he said but she interrupted him saying “So what are your plans after she give birth to YOUR daughter?” she asked with her voice full of sarcasm, jealousy, anger and pain.

“I’m going to be responsible for my daughter, I would give her everything she needs and I’ll abandon her after.” He said

“Abandon? How is that possible? Do you think that your mistress would let that happen? And how would you tell this to your sons? Our sons…” she said

“I’ll give them enough financial assistance and that’s all, I wouldn’t care for them anymore…. Our sons won’t know any of this. It should be a secret between us two. Or else our company’s reputation and everything would completely sink. I’m so sorry, Jinah… this would never happen again.” He explained as he hugged her tight while tears flowing from her cheeks.

March 29, 1995

“Minjeong, I need you… Please come here quickly!” Hanjae said completely in panic.

“Why? I told you to stop!” he replied in annoyance.

“I’m… my.. I’m giving birth please come, I promise after this you won’t see me and the baby anymore for your entire life! Just please go here.” She said

“Okay, I will..” he has no choice not to go, if it’s for his freedom and peace, so he would take the risk.

Just then, Jinah arrived, her hands are full of grocery bags.

“Where are you going? Do you have some emergency meetings with Mr. Lee?” she asked

“No, I really need to go! Someone needs me..” he said that made her think who is that someone, when she realized it’s the 9^th month of his mistress’ pregnancy.

“I’ll go with you.” She said putting down the grocery bags she has.

“No you can’t… It’s a personal matter!” he said but Jinah blocked his way throughout.

“It is and I know for sure it’s about your daughter. I want to see them.. Please” she said, he was completely shocked on what she has said “Did she really say, she want to meet my daughter?” he thought

They drove to Hanjae’s apartment and called an ambulance for help and they arrived at Seoul General Hospital. Minjeong called his sister, Hana who was a doctor in Seoul General Hospital.

Hanjae roamed in pain as she can’t take it anymore. She held Jinah’s hand and told her “Please take good care of my daughter, I may not be a good mother to her so please give her a good life.”

Jinah was confused, she told them that they won’t see her and the baby anymore if Minjeong would go and visit her.

“Why? I mean, you told us that  Minjeong won’t see the baby anymore! We’ll give you financial help just to stop. Why are you saying such things to me?” she asked

“I think, I can’t… Please tell her I love her so much and I would die just for her to live.” She said as she was delivered to the Labor room and Jinah was left in mystery. Why was she saying such stuff to me? Does she have a plan? Oh no this is not going into the right path! She thought

After 5 hours of waiting, still no news from the doctor can be received. Unknowingly Jinah walked back and forth still thinking on what Hanjae had said earlier.

“Ya! Jinah, why do you look so uneasy?” Minjeong scolded

“Nothing, I’m just scared… and confused” she said

“I’m sorry for bringing up this crisis to our family and our relationship… It’s my fault” he said

“Everyone can make mistakes but what bothers me the most is Hanjae and your baby.” She said nervously

“I told you, we won’t see them again anymore in our entire life, our lives would be back tomorrow. Trust me..” he said comforting her.

“I hope so.” She said almost in a whisper.

Finally, after hours of waiting, the doctor arrived.

"Oppa, I need to tell you something, it's about Hanjae and your daughter." she said shaking, from her tone of voice, Minjeong and Jinah is worried that something's wrong.

"Hanjae------ died..." she said

"How about the baby? Is she alive? Is she okay?" Jinah asked worringly, she knew how hard it is to lose a child, she once lost a child when she accidentally slipped into the bathroom's wet floor.

"Thankfully, the baby made it. Congrats oppa, you have a healthy baby girl!" she said with both confusion and happiness, Jinah smiled as a sign of relief.

Jinah then remembered Hanjae's request to her.

“Please take good care of my daughter, I may not be a good mother to her so please give her a good life."

“I think, I can’t… Please tell her I love her so much and I would die just for her to live.” 

The doctor led them to the room where the baby is.  Jinah’s tears started flowing as she saw a pretty girl, with her pure milk skin and pretty eyes. Honestly, she really wants to have a daughter for years and now that Minjeong has it with someone else, she’s confused on what to do.

"Hana, promise me, you won't tell anyone about Hanjae's daughter. Please" he begged

"Oppa, of course. I know your reputation would be messed if I do. And I didn't told my staff about this, not even a strand of hair!" she said

"Thank you, Hana!" he said

"Oh yeah before I forgot, what would be her name by the way?" she asked

"Hmmmm" he never thought of this since.

"Jinri!" Jinah exclaimed

"What a perfect name! Jinri means the truth" Hana said

18 year-old Sulli has a life full of misery, pressure and rejection. She knows the truth that she was a mistress’ daughter and she accepts it. Her brothers, Choi Jonghyun and Choi Taemin accepted her as their sister but her father just can’t. She does well in school, in fact she graduated as the Valedictorian in Seoul Girl’s High School but that’s not enough for her father to fully accept her as his daughter. Other people knew she was adopted by Minjeong and Jinah, an orphan perhaps. She's tired of hearing stuffs like "Oh so you're Sulli, Mr. and Mrs. Choi's adopted daughter?" "I so envy Sulli for being adopted by a rich family!" "What a lucky orphan!". That's the only reason Minjeong can make in front of the media and the people around them

For every graduation, only her butler attends the momentous event. She understands it, but what hurts the most is the rejection she felt and continuously feeling. Jinah tries to accept her as her real daughter but the fact that she was her husband’s mistress’ wife became a hindrance, ever since reality sticks in to her mind, she turns into a cold-hearted person infront of Sulli, she somehow felt some guilt, but she knows someday she’ll accept her too.

Someday in a cold winter afternoon of 2013, Sulli was painting a nature view, her favourite past time, when her butler, Jihoon knocked to her door.

“Appa!” she said pertaining to her butler for 10 years.

“Jinri! Mr. Choi wants to talk to you.”he said in a serious tone.

“You sound so serious, appa” she said worringly “Mr. Choi wants to talk to me, for the first time… personally…. Face to face…. What could it be?” she thought

“I’m serious. He said go down to his office now. It seems that he needs to talk to you for something important.” He said

“Okay, thanks appa! Wish me luck!” she said as she went down to his office.

“Come in” Minjeong said

“Good Morning Mr. Choi! Appa, I mean Jihoon-ssi said you want to talk to me?” she said, her voice was shaking, it was her first time to talk with him personally and face to face for 18 years.

“Sit down” he said, commanding her to sit in front.

“Have you ever thought of having a complete family?” he asked out of the blue that made Sulli think.

“Of course, Mr. Choi. I wanted to have one but it seems that I can’t” she said, her voice was full of pain and sadness.

“Have you ever dreamt of being accepted fully as my daughter?” he asked again, that question made Sulli crease her brows as she held back her tears.

“Of course, I mean who wouldn’t? Being accepted by your father… it would be a dream come true!” she said as her voice was full of hopes.

“So you want to be accepted as Choi Jinri the only daughter of Choi Minjeong?” he asked again, still Sulli was clueless on what topic they’re about or talking to, she nodded in reply.

“If so, do me a favour.” He said seriously as he faced her. Sulli’s eyes widen, she didn’t expect her father to request something as a condition for him to accept her fully.
