the choi jonghun that i know

Once upon a day, FT Island had an interview.

People mistook me a lot as a leader, while in fact it's actually Jonghun's role. But he never bragged much about it. Even after all these years, I never really sure what's on his mind every time people did that. He's not really the type to nag or complain, he prefers to save it all for himself. And I know I said a lot that he's not the Jung-Yunho-from-DBSK type of leader, but I do respect him as he is.

He has his own way to tell us what to do and what not. I remember that one afternoon after our usual magazine interview, it seemed like I had spoiled a little too many facts. Later he didn't talk much, but he kept ignoring me all day until I couldn't take it anymore and asked him, "What's wrong?". He just said, "Nothing. But I won't pay attention to your blabbering until you realized what kind of trouble you could've caused with that little mouth of yours."

That wasn't a deadly accusation or what, but I got the point right away that I've done something wrong. Since then I always try to pay more attention to every single word I want to say.

He's also not very good with words. When he tried to say something funny, instead of filled with laughters, the atmosphere always turns awkward. The funny thing is, that unfortunate trait of him could magically disappear in front of the ladies. It's not incorrect that fans addressed him as a cheesy flirt. Seriously, he is the biggest womanizer I've ever met. I don't mean to show off anything, but even I, Lee Hongki, who's far more popular than him in terms of idolatry, could never beat his records of the number of woman have ever dated.

It's not a common thing to have two different people who took the role as the leader and the front man in a group, especially a band. As Hongki is usually a better talker and he also happen to be a vocalist, naturally people tend to think that Hongki is the leader. I was once wondered myself, why did they choose Jonghun as the leader, instead of Hongki (or me, haha). But as the years goes by and I got to know both of them better, I could understand it better.

To be a leader, they choose the person who's more level-headed and has calmer manner. That's important for a group of energetic and hot-tempered kid; they need a person who's able to tamper down the atmosphere when things goes too uncontrollable. Also, to be able to take care of every single person in the group, a leader has to be a person who's always there and ready. Jonghun may doesn't talk a lot, nor that he is bossy or demanding, but he was the only one in the group with the ability to listen well.

As a bassist and the backing vocal of the group, I complain a lot about how our roles in the band have often overshadowed by Hongki's popularity, but there's this one saying Jonghun told us once, that I've always remembered. As a band, we must work as a unity, just like every parts of human body working together; Minhwan as a drummer takes the role of the heart, to keep the rhythm of the beat of our music; me as a bassist takes the role as the legs, to be the base of our melody; Seunghyun and him as the guitarist takes the role of both hands, which has the ability to show the things we want to achieve with our music; and last but not least, Hongki as the main vocalist takes the roles as the face, to represent ourselves and what kind of music we do.

Jonghun hyung, how can I say it, he's The Ultimate Bully of Song Seunghyun in the entire galaxy. He kicks me, punches me, and ruins my hair a lot. Heh, I made it sounds like he's such a bad boy. No. Don't be deceived by all those muscles, because he does all that like an ahjumma. Trust me.

Just kidding (look, he even glares like a vengeful ahjumma). Anyway, no matter how much he bullied me everyday, I still respect him a lot. He's like a hyung I never have, and maybe for him, I'm like a dongsaeng he always wants (maybe, or it could be just my own assumption). He takes care of me a lot, back then when we used to share a bedroom, and he's still like that now. He teaches me a lot about guitar, even let me borrow his precious 'girlfriends' for practicing.  Ha, I bet I'm the only one who ever touch his 'girlfriends' besides himself.

He's also a very hardworking person. Everyday he practices, he composes a song, he writes lyrics, he meets our producer discussing something about our next  project, and he also plays mini-golf and doing all those selcas. Really really hardworking indeed, our leader.

Because we're both very timid, people may assume that we're always have this awkward atmosphere when there're just the two us, sitting together. That's not true at all. I mean, we naturally don't talk a lot. But rather than awkward silence, it's more like compromised silence. We don't really need words to communicate. In our concerts, or any other kinds of showcase, he does this small gesture to talk to me during our performance; just by waggling his fingers or a simple eye movements. And just like that, I understand what he means.

If you take it among the five of us, he has the longest experience dealing with music. And he's very passionate; when he's faced with music, he's like an entirely different person. Together with Hongki hyung, he gives us this kind of  energy and excitement on the stage…

He's a leader through and through. Although sometimes he could be very hard to deal with. Especially when it comes to Hongki hyung, they fight a lot. Not that kind of fight… maybe more like misunderstanding. But it's never really a big deal. I mean, you can't expect five hotblooded youngman could live together calmly and quietly. A little arguments here and there is okay. That way, we can understand each other better.
