"What a day." I sighed as I walked back to my house. I had just come from the corner mini mart to get some snacks and a movie to watch. 

I don't care if it was a Friday night. I would rather be home be myself than going out with friends who do nothing but party. 

I was about to pass an alley when I heard something. Something like a whimper. 

I froze in my step. I waited until I heard it again. I looked around and tried to figure out where it came from. 

I saw something behind a dumpster and slowly approached it. 

'Am I seriously doing this?' 

I continued until I was a few steps away from it. 

"Oh my god!" I gasped. 

It was a wounded animal. A dog. A wolf-like dog. It's black fur was spotted with red scratches. 

I saw it open it's eyes and saw me. It started to growl and tried to move but it was so tired and weak it couldn't even lift up a paw. 

I set down my bag and crouched down. 

"Shh...It's okay. I'm not gonna hurt you." I spoke to it in a gentle tone. 

'What am I doing? It could have rabies and bite me!' 

It continued to growl but didn't move. It's eyes focused on me. Watching me with wary eyes. 

"I just want to help you. You are hurt. I want to help you." I got closer and rolled up my sleeves. 

"See? I have nothing to harm you with." 

I froze with a confused look on my face. "Why am I speaking to it like it understands me?" 

I looked at the dog. "Do you?" I couldn't help but ask. 

I saw it roll it's eyes. "Did you just roll your eyes at me?" I was baffled.

'I think it does understand me.' 

I slowly crouched back up. "Fine, if you are gonna act like that, I will just leave you here." 

The growling stopped. 

I got my bag and made a notion to turn. 

It the let out a small whine. 

I paused and looked down at it. 

"What?" 

I saw the eyes look around as if in deep thought. 

I put my bag back down and kneel in front of the dog. 

I sighed. "Would it be okay if I helped you?" 

It looked at me. 

I reached out with my palm up and put it near it's paw. 

"Please?" I really couldn't let it stay out here and die. 

"My house is just at the end of this block.  You can rest there until you are healed." 

It continued to stare at me. 

Then it did something that surprised me.
