Author's Note: Hey, guys. I'm baaaaaaaaaaaaaack :D Before we get started, this is a part that you must read in order to fully understand and enjoy this fanfic. Please bear with me, alright?

Files of The Dead is a series of short chaptered fanfics (when I mean short, I mean five chapters only, give or take one or two). Each set of short chaptered fics deal with one case, which will be investigated and solved within the fic itself. The fics/cases are chronological and are related to each other, as far as the general plot for the series goes.

This will be my first time writing a fic that's under the genres of horror, crime, mystery, suspense, friendship and romance all at the same time. I'm new to this so more than likely, I won't get all the paranormal aspects of the series right and accurate all the time. Please bear in mind that Files of The Dead is a work of fiction and that I'm just inventing things as I go along the way.

Of course, if a case in inspired by a real life horror story or an existing paranormal case, then I will mention it.

And yes, there will be romance in the series. But don't expect it all to happen right away. The romance will span throughout the series and wil probably start happening in latter cases.

I will be focusing on this series for now. The chapters for Stolen and Replaced have already been outlined and all is left is to type them out. If my muses permit, I will still be able to update my other chaptered fics as well as post one shots from time to time.

If you have ideas for future cases that you'd like to share or if you just want to ask me random questions, please don't hesitate to head to ask.fm/flow19 :)

Lastly and most importantly, Files of The Dead is inspired by and loosely based on the manga/anime series Ghost Hunt by Fuyumi Ono. So, if you're reading this series and are familiar with Ghost Hunt, don't be surprised if you find any similarities. Everything I picked up from the manga/anime/fanfics of Ghost Hunt are the ones that gave birth to this idea to begin with.

Now that's out of the way, shall we begin? ;) Enjoy!

Update (25 October): I've changed the title of the overall fanfic to just Files of The Dead simply because I'll be putting all the cases here so that you won't have problems with backtracking to the earlier parts of the series. I realized that it will be too much of hassle to have separate threads for every case. Each chapter will be named appropriate to the case/part it is part of.

Foreword

“Well, damn it.” Choi Sooyoung sighed in frustration; chocolate brown eyes glaring at the white screen attached on the wall at the other end of the room. “Dead end.”

Jung Yunho ran a hand down his face, carelessly tossing the file in his hands onto the wooden table. “Unbelievable.”

This wasn’t how she thought this would go.

It had been a week since she signed the contract – a week since she received this case. She had promised the lady… She had sworn that she’d solve the case. But it seemed like only rotten luck was on her side. Her eyes narrowed at the white screen she’d been glaring at, frowning at the image of a sixty year old man who smiled in such a narcissistic way that it made her want to hit him.

Up until that day, she believed that the suspicions were right. They had to be.

But today, evidence showed otherwise.

“Okay, okay. Let’s recap first before we lose our minds here.” Im Yoona spoke, organizing the papers before her absently. “Exactly one week ago, we spoke to Lee Hana about certain disturbances that have been occurring in her family’s bed and breakfast business. These disturbances include writings on walls and mirrors, hearing footsteps and knocking on doors and windows at night, broken objects, people getting locked out of their rooms and Honey’s Bed and Breakfast itself, especially Mrs. Lee herself, and the sound of a woman crying.”

Jung Yunho nodded, opting to continue for her from this point. “It was suspected that the owners of nearby Sunrise Inn, Han Sangbum and his wife, Jang Yujin, are possible culprits if one was to consider the angle of sabotage. Based on research, it is found out that Sunrise Inn experienced decline in business ever since Honey’s Bed and Breakfast opened. But then…”

“Based on interviews, research and all evidences we’ve gathered for the past week, they are innocent.” Sooyoung finished.

He pinched the bridge of his nose with his thumb and forefinger before he looked at his boss. “Do you think we should close the case?”

“No. No, that’s not possible.” The brunette shook her head adamantly. “We can’t just leave our client on her own to deal with these disturbances. We were hired to solve the case and that’s what we’ll do.”

“Then what do you suggest we do?” Yoona asked.

“Let’s go over the reports and the testimonies on the disturbances again.” She decided after a lengthy pause. “You mentioned writings on walls and mirrors, footsteps and knocking on doors and windows, broken objects and the sound of a woman crying.”

“It’s easy to do all those in a prank.” Yunho commented.

“Something’s not adding up though.” Sooyoung brought her chair closer to the table and began skimming through the reports closest to her. “Those footsteps and knocks on doors and windows… Obviously the guests checked and made sure no one was outside their doors and windows when those happened. But what about the near vicinity those places? If someone was pranking them, the person couldn’t get far that quickly, can they?”

“It means that someone might’ve caught a glimpse of a person wandering in the general vicinity of those places where those disturbances were reported.” He nodded.

Yoona quickly double checked her notes. “That’s the problem though, Soo. No one saw anybody. Even the security cameras didn’t catch any prankster.”

“And the broken objects?”

“No one was reported to be near them when they broke. Those vases and cabinets and chairs just… broke.”

Sooyoung froze; her eyes going wide when a realization hit her. “Don’t you think this is…”

Yunho and Yoona exchanged a confused look; the female of the two speaking on their behalf. “What do you mean?”

“We’ve established that this isn’t sabotage but all those reported incidents really happened, evidence and all… Could it be?”

The raven haired man’s jaw dropped as he finally understood. “Oh god.”

“What do you mean... Oh no.” Yoona gasped, staring at Sooyoung’s pale face. “Soo, Yunho, let’s just calm down, okay? Maybe we just missed something or something went wrong in our investigation and–”

“Yoong, you know that’s not the case.” Sooyoung interrupted her gently.

Neither of the two could argue. Sooyoung had always been highly intuitive.

“Then, what will we do, unnie?”

She tried to smile but it came out as a grimace; her gaze travelling back to the image projected on screen. She pressed a key on her laptop just once and the image changed from Han Sangbum to an image of an eerie writing on the wall.

What’s mine is mine.

“I think we all know the answer to that.”

Yunho shot out of his seat; his jaw set and his eyes hard. “You can’t be serious.”

Sooyoung remained unfazed. “What choice do we have?”

He groaned, running a hand through his now messy dark hair. “Are you sure about this?”

“Positive.”

“Sooyoung…” Yoona reached across the table and took the older woman’s hands in her own. They were cold to her touch. “There must be some other way.”

“You know the answer to that question as well as I do, Yoong.” Her eyes shifted to her, then to Yunho. “Looks like I can’t escape after all.”

Chapter 66: Just wanted to say thank you for the update and thanks for coming back. I absolutely love the tone, style, character development you've skillfully expressed. I know real life and lack of inspiration can make it hard to create, but I will wait patiently, whether it's two months or ten years.
