Red Skys and Royal Cards
“We already told you we aren’t getting into that, Sky.” Kai took a seat on the ground and refused to look at me.
Baekhyun remained on the chaise beside me, my hand on his thigh in reassurance and comfort. “You don’t have to tell me anything, Kai. I just want to clear a few things up, then I’ll go back to learning more on my own and the rest of you are free to tell me whatever you want whenever you please.”
“What is it?” Kris asked.
“Your curse, I’m highly confused on why it happened and why you morons didn’t listen to JiHoon in the first place and avoided this whole damn thing?” I asked them point blank.
“What?” They all gasped as they eyed me.
“Do you have any idea what I’m talking about?” I asked.
“We do.” Suho awkwardly rubbed his nape. “Why you know is what we’re trying to figure out.”
“Some light reading.” I flippantly replied. “Why did you keep going with it?”
“Because back then, most of us were nobodies, we had nothing, were going nowhere.” D.O told me. “A chance to be something more than we ever thought we could be wasn’t something we were going to let pass us.”
I nodded, and hummed slightly. Sadly I still have no idea what he’s talking about. D.O clearly mentioned something about their past, but without proper context I can’t figure the whole thing out. He made a point to make ‘nothing’, ‘nowhere’, and ‘nobodies’ clear and distinct in his telling, which all have negative connotations to them.
They must have lived in a time that was nothing like the one I was born into, but how different I didn’t know. I don’t know how they lived or what it was like so I can’t begin to guess what they experienced, but it must have not been that good if he would use words such as he did.
“We wanted a life that would be better than what we were heading towards.” Tao spoke up. “A way to escape the dismal life we had been trapped in.”
Chanyeol “Life was tough for us. Everyone we knew dreamed of having a better life, we were no different. And when that chance was given to us, we didn’t hastate to grab hold of it and take it. While it may have been a stupid choice and we should have listened, we were too caught up in the joy and excitement of having something new and living a life we never thought we could have.”
“We never understood why JiHoon wouldn’t want this for himself as well.” Lay said. His voice low and sad. “It wasn’t until we became bound and trapped within our Cards that the true reality of what we did crashed into us. Only then and after a long time of contemplation and isolation did we realize the mistakes we made. The truth of what we did in those years finally sunk in and we resigned ourselves to living this life because in the end, we deserve it.”
I remained silent for a moment as I thought about what they were saying. I can see part of their view on this, even without a full background to compare it to in some way. They were boys that wanted a better life and while the way they went at it wasn’t the right way to do it, it was all they had. They learned something new and used it to obtain something better for themselves.
Exactly what they did to get that in the end was a waste since it only made their lives worse in a way. In the search to make their life better they ended up destroying it. They lost their chance at a true future.
I want to give that back to them.
“Is there a way to reverse what happened to you?” I asked them.
Sehun shook his head. “If there was a way, don’t you think we would have done it already?”
“We’ve searched as much as we can but have found nothing that can ever undo what was done to us. There is barely anything on the subject of our curse and nothing written or passed down that speaks of a cure. This is our eternity.” Xiumin sadly said.
I sighed. There had to be something. That book spoke of something along the lines of how to reverse it, but it only brushed the surface. It never went into detail on exactly how the curse was placed or the specifics on the reversal if it were possible.
“That’s a shame.” I mumbled. “I wish I could do something.”
“You’ve done enough for us, Sky.” Baekhyun reassured. “You’ve let us live again, no matter how short it will be in the grand picture.”
I nodded softly. Maybe I would find something in another book or scroll as I searched for what happened to me and why I did not have a core any longer and my bonds ran through my entire body coursing with raw energy.
“I’ve got something else we need to have a quick chat about before I let you go and do as you wish around the house.” I told them as the events of earlier came to my mind. “I know I’m giving you freedom, but I need you to hold to some of my standards.”
“You’re not taking our freedom from us, are you?” Sehun whined.
I smiled. “Not at all. It’s just; I’d like you to not act as you did earlier. I understand you want to protect me and stand your ground. But the way you do it reflects back on me and I don’t want Dealers to view me as some dictator that resorts to violence.”
They looked to the ground once again. “I’m not scolding you, I’m doing anything but, yet you have to understand that should word get out that I’m the Descendant it isn’t only my actions that will be looked upon, but those of my Warriors as well. Naturally I try to avoid fights and conflicts, resolve things with as little violence as possible and set a different example. I don’t force you to do things unless there isn’t another way to do something. I give yo
