Heartbeat

Description

Choi Sooyoung is sick she’s been suffering the same disease for over 3 years now and as years goes by she has not been getting better, but only turning for the worst.

Her doctors told her that she might make it for another year but the chances this time are around 80%, and the doctors are made to believe the impossible which can’t be seen in their faces.

For short she was a hopeless case.

Her heart is failing and there’s nothing that can stop it.

Or so she thought.

Hello, here's your goody bag for joining my TMaF semi-contest! Thank you!

Plot: One of the few entries that can actually stir my heart. Despite the idea not being a completely new one or an intricately-complicated plot, I think you manage to make a heartwarming rendition of the idea. Aside from the idea, I think the plot technicalities are also covered. The pacing and flow is well-executed, it is just effortless to read your fic, because it just flows. True, the plot is not unpredictable or mindblowing (so cannot give you a full score here) but I don't really mind because romance-angst is kind of the genre that is easily predicted anyway. The plot development and the transition between one scene to another scene is also carried out smoothly –again, the fic just effortlessly flows. The scenes are effective and they tell what they need to tell and there are actual meaning behind each scene –be it to progress the plot, to build the feelings, or to describe a character. Another thing I want to point out is that you seem to have taken sufficient amount of research on the medical aspects of the story. I am certainly not certified to guaranty the truth behind the research, but the medical aspects are actually logical and believable, so good job!

Characters: I am impressed again. Similar to your previous entries, there are lots of indications, implications, effortless description that show me the characters of Sooyoung and Kyuhyun. Firstly, Sooyoung. I like how there are layers to her, that she's not either the overly optimistic girl facing the brink of death or she's an overly depressed weak one. I am actually glad that there are dimensions and vulnerability to her character. There's this honest acceptance and a strong will to live the life as best as she could, and there's this despair –making her a very humane character. I'm glad that the effect Sooyoung's character has on the reader is that you actually sympathize and care about her, instead of pitying her. The mild problem to me is, personally, there is this stereotype of characterization (somehow, a sick girl who is a main lead often times employ this kind of characteristics), so I was expecting something more –a bit more quirk to Sooyoung. Again, only a personal preference.

Kyuhyun, boy I love him. He's mentally strong. And you just get the feel that he's more than this downtown dorky boy who loves starcraft. There's something about him, that is even translated to the readers before we even know the background information of Kyuhyun himself. I love the letter he wrote. I effin' love it. I love how his letter actually shows the traits of his personality, being dorky but it's not as if he's only a normal jokester. A thing to be improved, is actually I'd love to see a point, maybe from Kyuhyun's mother's perspective, how Kyuhyun broke down, because he must have (you implied this, but it was not elaborated enough). He comes out as a rather perfect character (I know he's not), so more implication on how he actually had suffered might add up the point.

Technicalities aside, your characters manage to achieve the most important point/roles of characters in a story –readers actually care about them. Surely, this is not the first sad Kyuyoung fic I've read, but despite that, I can say I actually really, really want Sooyoung and Kyuhyun in this fic to be happy. I care about them, and it kinda breaks my heart that they have to undergo that kind of ending.

Style: Ah, I love this section in your story too. Knowing the effective-efficient tone you used in your previous entry, I'm actually glad how you manage to change the style to adapt with each plot's concept. The contemplative style works best, the way the scenes/sections are drafted work like magic, I love it. The style is not the most engaging one, to be honest, but it actually works well to lure the readers to be focused on the characters' feelings and interaction –which is definitely the most important point of a slice-of-life fic.

Suggestion:
• Not much, just add more about Kyuhyun's flaw. I understand that this may not be something you want to reveal in the beginning-middle part of the story. So as stated above, more elaborations from Kyuhyun's mother perspective would do wonder to this.
• Additionally, though this is minor, Sooyoung might need an extra something to really break her free from the stereotypes.
• Give a bit more contemplation to the writing style, in my opinion. And a sense of a more reality-based dialogue.

Favorite Parts:
• Kyuhyun's letter, definitely, should rests at the top favorite point of your fic. It's just so heartbrokenly beautiful and romantic, added with the sufficient humor (which actually kinda makes it more bitter –in a good way)
• Plainly, Sooyoung and Kyuhyun's relationship, because dare I'd say, so far in the entries I've read, this is the fic which can depict how love can be so genuine.
• Not major, but I like the fact you don't forget to add details on other characters: Sooyoung's mother rushing to help her walk or something.
