“His best friends?” you said, staring at the orange haired boy.
Taemin shook off the boy and Sulli’s grips on his arm, glaring at them. “Used to be,” he said shortly.
“What’s wrong with you?” said Sulli. “You disappeared without telling any of us and now you’re acting like we’re the ones who did something. After you left Byunghun cried--” A hasty cough from the boy, who you guessed must be Byunghun, made Sulli cut her sentence short.
“Who wants drinks?” said Onew suddenly, fidgeting awkwardly. Without waiting for a reply, he declared, “I’ll get everybody some drinks,” and fled the scene. If only you could do the same, you thought anxiously, watching the scowls being traded between Taemin and the couple.
“You said you were going to Russia,” said Byunghun to Taemin, with an accusatory edge to his voice. “Do you need directions? Because this is Seoul.”
“I changed my mind,” Taemin replied.
“You should have said something,” Sulli said. “You just disappeared without even saying goodbye. You upset everyone.” And she began to reel off names. Taemin’s bottom lip began to jut out sulkily, unrepentent, but at the sound of one name in particular - the only girl’s name so far - his face fell, and hurt flashed across his features.
You watched him, feeling a mixture of sympathy, protectiveness - and jealousy.
The two of you left the party earlier, sharing an awkwardly silent taxi home. You stared out of the window for the entire journey, pretending not to see Taemin’s attempts to catch your eye. Whatever discussion was about to take place, you didn’t want it to happen in earshot of a random taxi driver.
The moment you were safely inside the apartment Taemin spoke: “Are you mad?”
“No,” you replied automatically. After a sigh and a pause you revised it: “Not really. Not at you.”
“I didn’t expect to ever see those guys again,” Taemin said, kicking off his shoes and loosening his tie as he walked past you. He flopped down on the sofa, looking exhausted. “Especially not at the party.”
“That girl,” you said, joining him on the sofa after discarding your heels at the door. “The one Sulli mentioned...”
Taemin’s eyes clouded again. “I told you about her before,” he said, with an unconvincing shrug.
You recalled the conversation he meant. “Your first love,” you said. “The girl who didn’t like you back.” When Taemin nodded slowly, you went on: “When Sulli brought her up, you looked so sad. It made me kind of furious. Not at you,” you added quickly, seeing Taemin’s eyes widen in alarm.
Taemin edged closer to you, then tucked himself into the crook of your arm, nuzzling your shoulder.
“It’s selfish,” you mused aloud, “it’s really selfish but I felt jealous just hearing about your life before we met. Like if you adopted a dog and you met the family they lived with before you. It’s stupid, sorry. I was kidding myself your whole world was just about me and it was a rude awakening--”
You were cut off by Taemin’s lips pressing gently against your own, just for a moment. When you moved away he was gazing at you with soft, adoring eyes. “I tried to tell you last night,” he murmured, fingertips grazing your cheek. “My whole world is about you.”
You looked into his eyes and saw yourself reflected there. Without stopping to think, you curled your fists around Taemin’s shirt to pull him close, dotting butterfly kisses along his jaw. Taemin shivered happily, beaming as if all his birthdays had come at once. Your lips skimmed along his jaw, and finally reached his lips--
--but a sudden knock at the door made you both pause.
“Don’t answer it,” Taemin whispered.
“It might be someone important.”
“It’ll just be that weird neighbour guy. Or your stupid classmate.” Taemin rubbed his nose against yours. “Stay here with me.”
You were tempted - but a feeling in your gut told you to answer the door. Reluctantly, you wriggled out from underneath Taemin and left him on the sofa. You weren’t sure why, but you felt your heart thump anxiously as you headed towards the door, an ominous beat that told you you weren’t going to like what you found behind it.
You opened the door to a skinny, pretty boy with a feline mouth and meticulously tailored clothes. He looked you up and down, unimpressed.
“Can I help you?” you said, looking at him blankly.
The boy peered past you into the apartment, looking for something. “I’m here for my brother,” he said. “Taemin.”
