A Look Into Our Future (WRITING CONTEST!)

Description

I'm kind of throwing this together just because I have a very specific craving to read futuristic fanfiction and that is very difficult to fulfill!

Well guys, I want to hold a contest. A writing contest, specifically! And I have a hankering for something action-packed, mysterious, full of style, and most of all... DYSTOPIC!

Yes, I am in love with all concepts of futuristic dystopia! Buuuuut I just cannot find time to write my own extremely long WIP of a dystopia, and so I thought I'd offer a challenge to those willing to take it!

Without overcomplicating things, I'll jump into the rules/guidelines:

1. Obviously, the setting that I'm looking for is a futuristic dystopia. (I'll go more into the details and ways to find inspiration for this later.)

2. ANY length! I'll accept drabbles, one-shots, two-shots, multi-chaptered... Length is not really a factor that I take into account when it comes to "good" writing. What matters is have you told a good story in the amount of words that you decided to use?

3. ANY rating! I'm happy with mature or not--it's all good!

4. ANY genre! Apart from the world being a dark future (which you'll have to establish somehow), the focus of your story can be romantic, ual, political, survival--as long as you're telling it well!

5. I MUST admit however I am quite biased when it comes to who you're writing about. The most likely to get my attention will be stories about Block B, BAP, or EXO. This isn't meant to discourage you from writing about other groups/idols though! Do whatever inspires you. (However, if you would like to comment or pm me asking me about a specific group or something, specifically if I actually know them, then feel free. Because honestly I'll be able to enjoy/critique a story better if I'm familiar with the characters you're writing about.)

6. I'm gonna give a vague estimate of a time limit here. Six weeks? If this contest gets buried and nobody talks to me for a while, I might shorten it. But if someone requests more time, I'll probably grant it too. Within reason, of course. Like this thing isn't gonna last into next year or anything.

7. Prizes are negotiable! I'll offer you an art commission, a story commission, I'll friend you on Facebook, I'll follow you on tumblr, I'll buy you something online (but I won't spend more than $30 including shipping), hell if you're one of my Mary Sue story subscribers I'll give you some influence over the story if that interests you. Basically I want you to have incentive to write a story, so I'm being flexible about the prizes here!

8. Enter your story by commenting with a link to it! And I recommend subscribing so you can keep up with any updates. (Wow, I added this after publishing. I knew I was missing something.)

Foreword

Alright here's the part where I help with the creative brainstorming! Because I'm not about to throw out any specific demands without illustrating the great number of directions you could go with it. So here's all the possible meanings of a futuristic dystopia!

1. The setting could be post apocalyptic. However, this only opens up multiple possibilities as to the nature of the apocalypse! This could be:

  • Nuclear apocalypse - World War Whatever ended in much of the world being obliterated by nuclear weapons, and the tiny number of survivors are now facing the threat of the resulting extreme climate changes as well as dangerous radiation levels left behind, as well as any residual political agendas that may be haunting their existence.

  • Extreme natural disasters - whether volcanos or tsunamis, earthquakes or even an asteroid impact, an "Act of God" could reduce all of the progress of mankind to a much more primal state.

  • Epidemic - a severe sickness spread through natural causes or perhaps biochemical warfare, what sorts of symptoms are typical? is it a reanimation (zombie) virus? how much of the population is affected, and how does the rest of humanity react and try to combat it?

  • Outside oppressors - okay, to be honest, a robot uprising/alien invasion is much more of a stretch for me, but if you wanna go for it and you think you can make it work, then by all means do so!

2. Somehow more exciting to me are the possibilities offered by the pre-apocalyptic dystopian societies!

  • Totalitarian governments - in which the population is heavily oppressed by military presence and basic human rights are often denied. Is there a rebellion movement? In what ways does the government go about indimidating its people?

  • Rise in consumerism - the real control belongs to the corporations and the media. Characterized by an acceleration in technological advancements and the availability of such products. What sorts of unseen oppression/population brainwashing is taking place here?

  • Anarchic - the government has lost much of its influence and crime rates are through the roof. What caused such a fall and what is the primary motive of those among the main population?

  • "Off world" civilizations - they take place anywhere but Earth. In a space station or on another planet (or multiple other planets). What caused the move from Earth? How much of the population left Earth? Was any left behind and was Earth still inhabitable by them? Yeah this is another  extremely open possibility and you can go any direction with it.

Okay I'm gonna be honest here, the possibilities are way too endless for me not to send you to a reference page. Here is a fantastic list of the different types of dystopias you can write about! And since I'm stressing a futuristic dystopia here, I'm gonna stress the use, description of, or at the very least allusion to the possible advancements you want to focus on for the story! New types of gadgets or upgrades to common means of transportation, an increase in scientific influence over the population (whether meant to increase/decrease population or affect genetic advancement), any military or political agendas you want to address, any new problems that have cropped up due to such advancements--so many possibilities I can't possibly list them all!

It's a really open genre, is what I'm saying here.

Please feel free to come to me if you have any questions about this. I'm much better at outlining these sorts of things when I'm talking to a real person who can help me direct my thoughts a little bit.

And now I'm going to list some sources of inspiration!

This song and this video by Imagine Dragons

Almost anything by deadmau5, but particularly this song

A whole slew of novels like 1984, Brave New World, Fahrenheit 451, Unwind, The Hunger Games, The Giver, and a ton of others that I'm sure lots of people have heard of but haven't read

Movies like Repo Men, V for Vendetta, A.I., The Matrix, The Fifth Element, I Am Legend, Book of Eli, I Robot, etc.

Drawing on history, such as censorship in North Korea and the Soviet Union, the Holocaust, the Dark Ages, the acceleration of technology and the arms race during WW2 and the Cold War, the Industrial Revolution/Digital Revolution, any period of enlightenment (Renaissance, rise in philosophy and scientific inquiry, the Enlightenment that inspired ideas used in the American Revolution and the creation of a republican government), etc!

If you have any questions or advice for me, please don't hesitate to comment/pm me!

I really like all the ideas that you have stated above, it's so awesome and I'm planning to join too. But, the thing is I can see myself starting the story but about the ending. It looks so unpredictable and I can't think of a unique one to write. So, I'm not confident about starting the story. Any ideas and opinions?
By the way, I really enjoyed movies like War World Z but I don't want to copy the author. I want to think of something phenomenon. I hope you could help me.
