Just the way you expected, Soojung was an amazing dancer. You could hear hushed, awed whispers from the club members as she broke into movement, gliding across the floor with superhuman ease. You glanced at Minwoo. He was staring, open-mouthed, obviously impressed.
Soojung slid to a halt and snapped her fingers, pointing at you. It was your turn. You forced yourself to forget about how good Soojung was and focused on what Kwangmin had taught you, moving your hips the way he’d showed you.
A few calls of encouragement came from the club members; you hoped Minwoo was one of them. Ending your turn with a snap of your own fingers, you let Soojung continue, and chanced a look at Minwoo. He wasn’t looking at you, but beside him, Jeongmin was. He raised his eyebrows at you when he saw you gazing at Minwoo. Oh no, has he noticed I keep looking Minwoo’s way? You looked away quickly.
“Getting tired?” Soojung said, snapping her fingers at you.
“Not yet!” you fired back, bursting into agile movement. But you spoke too soon, as your ankle suddenly twisted beneath you and you felt your legs give way. You cried out in pain as you dropped to the floor, hitting it with a loud thud.
Immediately Bora was by your side. “Can you move?” she said, putting her hand on your ankle. You tried to stand up, supported by Bora, but your leg wobbled unsteadily.
“It’s okay,” you said, flushing. “I just twisted it, that’s all.”
“All the same, I don’t think you should dance like this,” Bora said, looking concerned.
Soojung stepped back, biting her lip. “I guess that means I win?” she said uncertainly.
“Soojung’s the better dancer anyway,” said Jeongmin, stepping forward.
You closed your eyes. As it wasn’t enough that your ankle was burning, you had to undergo the embarrassment of hearing them all say Soojung was better anyway now? Why had Kwangmin ever convinced you to do this?
“Wait!” you heard a voice say. You opened your eyes. It was Minwoo. “I thought she was really good!” he continued. “They were both good!” You offered him a smile, which to your delight he returned. “Can’t we let both of them join?”
Bora looked at Soojung, then at you. “I guess there’s nothing wrong with that,” she said. “Okay, you two. You’re in.”
Soojung squeaked happily, high fiving you, Bora and finally Minwoo.
“Can you walk?” said Minwoo to you, looking at your ankle. “I could walk you home if you want.”
You went bright red. Say yes, say yes! you thought, screaming at yourself. Why did you have to forget how to speak whenever Minwoo was talking to you? You opened your mouth to accept--
But Soojung got there first. “Minwoo, I was hoping you could walk me home,” she said, giving him a dazzling smile. “I wanted to ask you about any dance moves you could teach me.” She made a grab for his arm and led him away before he could argue.
She’s better at this than I am, you thought as you walked to the school gate, feeling dejected. Better at dancing and better at flirting. I don’t have a chance.
A pair of arms suddenly wrapped around you from behind, making you jump in surprise.
“You got in, you got in, you got in!” Youngmin chirped into your ear happily, squeezing you so tightly you gasped for breath.
“Nice work 'tripping’,” Kwangmin said, appearing in front of you. “Did you just think that up spur of the moment?”
“I didn’t do it on purpose,” you said, gasping when Youngmin finally let go of you.
“Oh, really?” Kwangmin frowned. “We thought you did it to make yourself look cute and vulnerable in front of Minwoo.”
“You think too highly of me then,” you sighed, letting Youngmin take your hand. “It was a total accident. And now Minwoo’s going home with Soojung. I’m an idiot.”
Kwangmin was silent for a moment, thinking. “Don’t worry about that,” he said. “I’ll follow them.”
“What?” But Kwangmin had already disappeared again, and you were left with one very excitable Youngmin.
As Youngmin led you out of the school gates, swinging your linked hands happily, you thought you saw Jeongmin watching the pair of you out of the corner of your eye. But when you turned to check, he was gone.
