The Legend of Sea Souls

            It is said amongst sailors that the greatest protection a man can have on water is a mermaid. As dangerous and mysterious as they are to humans, legend has it that when one falls in love, they protect their loved ones with their lives even if it meant the end of theirs. In most cases the sailor never even knew of his protector because it was forbidden for mermaids to be seen by a human but that never stopped the curious few who ventured into human waters. Though as much as humans believed mermaids were a dangerous species, both races faced a great threat.

           Sirens were the greatest enemy for both humans and merpeople. Witches of the sea, they killed both humans and mermaids or used them for their own gains. Both tricked into thinking that Sirens had the answer to their problems many humans were pulled to their deaths by song while mermaids were offered the chance to be with human they loved on land. Mermaids died while trying to protect humans from them in hopes of saving their lovers but many were killed by the very ones they tried to protect when it became known they were mermaids. Men hunted mermaids thinking they were the reason for the death of so many fellow sailors. Sirens used this to advantage and had hundreds of mermaids murdered in cold blood by coaxing humans to their waters where most mermaids were found and slaughtered.

           For years mermaid’s waters ran red from the hundreds of deaths and killings. In time though, mermaids retreated further into the ocean far from humans to save what was left of their kind, leaving humans vulnerable to the Sirens who stayed in waters close to the people on shore. Sirens were cunning creatures that could form themselves to both humans and other sea creatures for protection. Humans were still left with the problem of the disappearance of men not knowing that the killers still lurked in their waters.

          This being said, the legend of the Sea Souls, lies in the idea that the souls of the mermaids killed while trying to protect the sailors from the Sirens still lurk in the waters. Even in the afterlife they are protecting those that sail across the seven seas in hopes of making up for their loved ones who they couldn’t save.
