Of Realizations and Lies

The Other Side of the Mirror

Sehun swallowed as he watched the bus roll away. Jina was waving enthusiastically at him and he forced a half-hearted wave back.

He sighed softly and raked his fingers through his hair. What was happening to him? He was going on a date with Lee Jina, the Lee Jina he would give anything to be with, and guess what? He wasn't even happy.

His mind was just so occupied with Sunmi that he could hardly remember what he had done the entire day with Jina latching onto his arm and cutting off all blood circulation. He was there by the corner when he saw the guy called Jongwan confessing to Sunmi earlier in the afternoon.

He was instantly shaken from his state and his mood downed immediately. He wanted to go right up to that innocent guy with a great taste, and just strangle him till he died right on the spot. And no this wasn't a common behavior for him.

He realized that he was extremely sensitive when some guy approached Sunmi or even talked to her for more than a few seconds than necessary. His chest would constrict in the most annoying of manners and he had to force himself to look away before he did something he knew he would regret but would do again in a heartbeat.

Buffling, but well.

What he realized next was that he was losing touch of his logical sense and well, to put it simply, his braincells. They were disappearing as long as Sunmi was around and he didn't seem to be thinking straight. Lee Jina, hello, why in the world was he thinking about another girl when he was with the one girl he yearned for?

Sehun wrinkled his nose and turned to catch his own bus home. The Pandora charm bracelet jingled in his pockets as he walked and his hand reached down to feel it's cool metal surface on his fingers. He nearly gave it to Jina just now, really really nearly.

His hand was gripping the bracelet so hard, his fists clenched and he just willed himself to take the darn thing out of his pocket. He coudln't just buy a 500 thousand won bracelet and not give it away to someone! What a waste!

But he didn't and now it was still with him as he wondered what he should do with it, pushing the suggestion of giving it to Sunmi as he was supposed to.

He caught sight of someone from the corner of his eye and he snapped his head right, his eyes widening in alert. Wait did he just see...Sunmi? He rubbed his eyes and walked closer to where he saw her.

It couldn't be. Sunmi couldn't be here at the bus interchange. She had to be somewhere else with Suho, enjoying her romantic Valentine's date.

The thought made Sehun exceptionally irritable.

Sehun grew closer to the pillar where he thought he saw Sunmi, and his heart began pounding faster in his chest. What if it was really her? What if she was here right this instant, the one person he wanted to spend this day with? Sehun swallowed, biting his lip.

Perhaps, just perhaps...

Sehun reached the pillar and he heard a soft sob from the person leaning on it's other side. He held his breath as he took a step forward, until....

"Yah boy, make way." A rude ahjusshi shoved Sehun out of his way and strode off, scowling as if the entire world owed him money. Sehun stumbled and swayed as he tried to regain his balance. He frowned and brushed imaginary dust from his shoulders as the ahjusshi strode off gallantly, and he shrugged.

He turned around the corner and blinked at the empty spot. His eyes shot up and he surveyed the people around him, not seeing any girl of similar height and figure to Sunmi. He sighed and leaned against the pillar, massaging his temples.

He must have been seeing things.

-----

Sunmi gasped softly as she caught her breath, her hand clutching her chest as her heart thudded rapidly. He almost saw her, almost! What would he think if he saw her hiding in the corner with a box of soft squishy brownies, tears streaming down her eyes? Thank goodness that ahjusshi distracted him and she could get away.

Sunmi peeked out from behind the wall and watched as Sehun walked over to his bus queue. Her heart sank as she replayed the scene of Jina hugging Sehun and her chest constricted once more. She stared down at the box of brownies in her hands and wiped away some tears.

"God damn it." she whispered. "I think I'm in love with him."

The moment Sehun saw Sunmi the next day, he felt the surge of guilt rising up in his chest and was unable to control that cringing feeling from getting more and more unbearable. He thought about how he had spent his Valentine's Day with Lee Jina instead of Sunmi and he just felt like...like a douche.

He tried reasoning with himself, however. Sunmi and him weren't in a real relationship so logically, all that shouldn't have mattered. Except he forgot something, something very important.

He forgot to consider what sort of a person Lee Jina was in this world and how she would use Sehun's choice on Valentine's day to her benefit. Within a few hours since the first bell of school, the entire cohort had gotten to know about how Sehun had chosen to spend the special Valentine's with Lee Jina instead of his girlfriend Sunmi and everyone assumed that Sehun had dumped her.

The sad thing was, Sunmi did nothing to go against those claims because she did feel as if he dumped her, even if they weren't dating in the first place.

Jina was acting as if she was already the new girlfriend of the soccer star and some kinder students in school were already showering Sunmi with sympathetic glances which she did not appreciate at all. Just mind their own business, couldn't they?

Sunmi didn't know how she was supposed to face Sehun after she realized her own feelings for him and got her heart broken almost instantaneously. It had to be the fastest heart break ever in the world, huh? It was only when her heart was breaking that she realized what she felt for him.

Too late.

She hadn't even realized she had fallen for Sehun at all. The thing about the mind was that it thought too much about things. Her mind came up with a list of things her future ideal boyfriend should have, qualities that would make the guy the perfect guy for her, the things he should like, the things he should do.

However, love just was. You couldn't choose to fall out of love when the other party didn't qualify all the things on your list. When you fell in love, your list didn't matter at all. You could flush it down the toilet bowl and it wouldn't change a thing.

Sunmi liked Suho because he had every quality she wanted in a man. Her brain decided to like this guy as he seemed very outstanding after long periods of analyzing him.

But Sunmi's heart decided to fall in love with Sehun because...just because. Because there were sparks when they were together, because he was the person that could make her skin tingle when he touched her and could make her heart race. Because he was the one she unconsciously cared for and worried about even when he was in her line of sight.

Because when it came down to love, logic didn't matter.

Sunmi caught Sehun looking in her direction again and she glanced away, pretending not to see him. Her heart gave a painful squeeze as the same scene of Jina hugging Sehun replayed in her mind and she cursed herself for remembering it. What was wrong with her? Couldn't she just forget it happened?

She was angry with him for choosing another girl but couldn't because she had no right to. She was angry at him for making her care so much that if need be, she might even smile and congratulate him, giving him and Jina her blessings should they get together.

Love was just a bastard, seriously. Sunmi sighed softly to herself and played with her fingers. And love made you do really silly things, she realized. Things like letting go.

-----

"Sehun oppa, I heard from Jina that you and her are dating? Is that true?" a few junior girls approached Sehun and he squirmed on his spot, biting his lip. "Uh..."

The EXO-K boys rolled their eyes in disapproval. They found out that Sehun had gone on a date with Jina the previous day and were disappointed with his choice, but mostly because of the girl in question. Had they known what Sunmi was feeling right then, they wouldn't be so calm about it.

"No Jina and I aren't dating." Sehun shook his head. Because they weren't! Maybe it wasn't even considered a date. It was just...a friendly outing.

"Oh, so is it okay if you come with us for a movie this afternoon?" one of the girls asked courageously. "We have free movie tickets!" she beamed hopefully.

Sehun looked over at Sunmi instinctively and she looked away. "I'm sorry." he rubbed the back of his neck. "I'm sure Sunmi wouldn't-"

"I don't mind." Sunmi cut in, avoiding his eyes as she smiled at the girls. "I don't mind at all. Sehun, you can go on a movie date with these pretty girls if you want to. I'm fine with it. You don't have to ask me for permission for these things."

Sehun looked taken aback. In the past, she would have helped him get away with these invitations but what was this? She didn't mind? Sehun felt a little hurt by her comment. She wouldn't mind if he went out with a bunch of pretty girls as they clawed and touched him?

"I'm sorry. I'm not free." Sehun shook his head firmly. "Thanks for the invitation though."

The girls backed away in disappointment but Sehun didn't notice. He was gazing at Sunmi who was absolutely determined to not look in his direction, and Sehun couldn't help but sense she was upset at something. Or perhaps someone. Or perhaps him.

"Sunmi why didn't you help me?" Sehun pouted lightly and went over to her, hoping that by reverting back to his whining ways she would react to him as she usually did. At least give him a flick on the forehead or whack on his back. Anything would do. Just...acknowledge him.

"I just spoke the truth, Sehun." Sunmi murmured softly. "I'm in no position to mind who you go out with and you don't have to seek my opinion for these things. Do as you please."

Somehow, that statement made Sehun even more unsettled. "Sunmi, are you...are you angry with me?" he asked carefully, eying her expression. "Are you angry that I went on a date with Jina yesterday without telling you? I only saw your messages and calls at night but when I called you, you didn't pick up." he sulked.

Sunmi turned away. Stop with the Jina thing already, she knew enough. Of course she didn't pick up you toot, she was too busy crying to care. "I'm not angry." she whispered. Just horrifyingly upset and jealous and irritated.

Sehun couldn't help but feel that he did something wrong even though Sunmi's words were soothing. He raked his fingers through his hair and tried to say something again but Sunmi already moved off, her attention off him. He watched her with a sinking heart. What did he do?

------

"So what did you want to talk about?" Sehun beamed brightly at Sunmi as he leaned against the railings beside her. The two of them were on the school's rooftop according to Sunmi's request and Sehun was just elated that she decided to initiate conversation for the first time that day. She seemed to have been avoiding him even if she denied it when he asked.

She suddenly suggested talking to him in private and Sehun didn't care what the hell she wanted to talk about as long as she was talking to him. Well Sehun, you really should care.

Sunmi sighed softly and stared out into the distance. "I've been thinking about our fake relationship." she murmured. "It started because you wanted to protect me from your fangirls and so that you could have an excuse to hang out with us and not those soccer lackeys of yours."

Sehun nodded. He remembered the time when he impulsively kissed Sunmi in the hallways and he blushed pink. Aigoo why was he so brave then?

Sunmi seemed to be reminded of the same incident and she looked crestfallen at the memory. "And I've been thinking how I don't need your protection anymore." she whispered. "If we go our separate ways at this point, your fangirls would be too caught up in getting your attention to feel jealous that I was once your faux girlfriend."

Sehun stared at her. "Wait, but-"

"And you've grown, Sehun." Sunmi continued, ignoring him. "You're not that naive, not that stupid and gullible as before. You might even survive if you're thrown to hang out with your lackeys once more. You're on good terms with Jina and her friends and well, you don't need to stick with us any longer." she whispered.

"What is that supposed to mean?" Sehun gaped at her words, feeling uncomfortable. "You're talking as if you don't want me here anymore."

Sunmi didn't acknowledge nor did she deny. "Sehun, I've been thinking." she murmured. "I think we should stage a break up for our faux relationship. There's no point anymore is there? Should the devil return any day soon, I don't want to remain his girlfriend. Let's just end this."

"But why!" Sehun grabbed her arm, wheeling her to look at him. Sunmi avoided his eyes. "I just explained-"

"But what triggered you to want a break up?" Sehun choked out. "I don't want a break up! Are you angry that I went on a date with Jina yesterday? Okay to be honest I was trying to convince myself to go and I hadn't been sure if it was the correct choice the entire time, but if you're saying things like that because of that, then the date was definitely the wrong choice. I regret going, I really do."

Sunmi pulled away and wore a fake smile. "Sehun, it doesn't matter what I think." she reminded. "We weren't dating for real, remember?"

She strode off quickly, turning her head as a tear trickled down her cheek. Sehun watched her go, his face paler than usual and his fists clenched at his side.

Weren't for real? So why did it ing hurt?
