Forbidden Boys

She awoke after a few hours of sleep, feeling the sun caress her face and. Morning had arrived and for once, Eunbi didn’t feel the slightest scared or annoyed to step out of bed. In this case, Kyungsoo’s bed, which he so nicely let her borrow for the night. She moved about to get up, only to be surprised as the pain was close to unnoticeable when she straightened her back and stood up. It was still there, but far from as intense as before. The painkillers from yesterday must’ve worked their magic pretty well. Speaking of which, Ahbin hadn’t called at all the previous day, something that had her wondering whether the other girl had forgot.

The sudden sound of activity in the kitchen had Eunbi reacting, for it was still quite early and her grandmother wasn’t known to be up at eight am. And true that, the person who was making breakfast was none other than Kyungsoo, who stood at the stove, flipping pancakes. “Good morning.” the male spun around and greeted her with a bright, dazzling smile, “good morning.” it had to be the first time Eunbi saw a teenage boy, or male for that matter, prepare food. At home it was always her mother who made breakfast and dinner. Never had she seen either her stepfather, nor Luhan or Sehun cook. “I hope you like pancakes.” Eunbi couldn’t say as she’d never before tried american pancakes. But she would love to try, “I think.” Kyungsoo laughed at that, thus leaving the girl slightly flustered, “you think? You mean you’ve never tried it before?” she nodded, completely forgetting about the fact that his focus lay on the food, and the pancakes he, once done, piled up on three plates. “No,” she paused, stared at the plates once more, and then continued, “and I think you’ll have a hard time getting grandma to wake up.” the old woman didn’t wake up until late morning, a habit Eunbi knew her mother hadn’t liked. Mostly because her mother had seen it as a waste of time. “Who’s hard to wake up?” the girl her heel, shock obvious on her face as she stared right at her grandmother, who was awake and seemingly full of energy. Eunbi couldn’t believe her eyes, “aren’t you supposed to be sleeping?” for the old woman to have changed her sleeping habits seemed close to impossible, more so since she’d been so against it when her mother brought it up when they all lived together. “How can you sleep when you have a Chef to be making all your meals.” the surprises never seemed to end. “But,” completely lost of words, Eunbi fell silent and glanced at Kyungsoo, who’d now begun to set the table. Could he really be the reason to her grandma’s change?

A short moment later, they all sat around the kitchen table, and every other second Eunbi found herself steal a glance at the male. He didn’t exactly come off as a very persistent person. And for her grandmother to have changed just because of food was highly unlikely. But he’d succeeded with something her mother had tried several years, and that was enough for Eunbi, who approved of him. “Honey, have you found a nice boyfriend yet?” Eunbi coughed, her cheeks flushing at the sudden mentioning of boyfriend’s. It was a question she’d rather not answer, especially as the boy she liked seemed to have some kind of relationship with her best friend. At least that’s what Eunbi thought, but whether it was true, she wasn’t sure. “Kind of, I don’t know. Can we please talk about something else?” embarrassed, she shoved a piece of the pancakes into . The texture of it was different than what she was used to, and the maple flavoured syrup a bit too sweet, but other than that, it was delicious. “What? It’s nothing wrong with wanting to know.” maybe so, but Eunbi wasn’t ready to tell her about Yixing. At least not yet. Not until she was certain there were nothing between Yixing and Ahbin. It was a thought that troubled Eunbi as the other girl had made herself pretty clear that she liked Yixing, something that could become a problem. “Can we change subject now?” laughter filled the room and Eunbi shot the male a look, as if to apologize for the old woman’s behaviour. But he only smiled.

Time ticked on as they engaged in conversations about various subjects. It was a chat that continued on long after they’d finished their food, and it would’ve continued on if it hadn’t been for the phone, which started to ring in the middle of it all. Eunbi and Kyungsoo was left alone as the old woman went to pick it up, something that gave her a chance to talk to him without her grandmother listening. “Is it true that you want to be a Chef?” his bright smile gave him away rather instantly, “it’s been a dream since I was young to become a Chef.” only someone with a dream they’d decided for themselves could smile that brightly, and she couldn’t help but to admire him for that, for she herself hadn’t made up her mind of what she wanted to do after high school. “You? Do you have any dreams?” what was she going to say. Her dreams. Did she even have any? University wasn’t exactly a topic she’d paid too much attention to. Though, Eunbi was quite sure she would attend one. And interests? There hadn’t been a lot of time to do anything else than studying as she grew up. Kyungsoo must’ve realized her hesitation, because he spoke yet again, “don’t worry. I know plenty of people who doesn’t know what they want to do in life.” Eunbi tried to remain positive, that it was normal for a sixteen, soon-to-be-seventeen year old to not know. But her own curiosity had all of a sudden made way for worry and stress.

She should’ve been glad then, when her grandmother returned and thereby interrupted her thoughts. It was a relief that lasted a second or so as she got to know who’d called, “your mother is coming later this evening.” no. She didn’t want to go home. Everything she’d tried to escape from was now something she would have to return to. “I know it’s not what you wanted. But I’ve talked to her and she’s promised to make it better.” how could Eunbi trust her mother’s words when she’d heard that before? There weren’t going to be any difference this time around either, and if so, it would probably last a week. Suddenly distressed about the new information, Eunbi got up, thanked Kyungsoo for the delicious breakfast, and then left to put on her shoes. She needed to think.

Wandering down the streets, she tried to come up with a solution. Anything that could help was of value. It became obvious rather quickly though, how she could do nothing. She could fight and yell all she wanted. But the battle was already over before it’d started. The queen had won and the feeble worker lay defeated. Okay, maybe that was a bit harsh. However, to go home and act as if everything was alright, wasn’t going to work. Even her mother had to understand that. Plus, how could the woman make a promise like that? Did she really not know anything of the stuff Luhan and Sehun were up to? The sneaking out at night, the partying at clubs, clubs they weren’t supposed to get into, but did either how. And last but not least, Luhan’s disgusting mindset. Had all that slipped her mother’s attention?

Furious by it all, Eunbi came to a halt, thus causing the person behind to walk right into her. “Look where you’re going.” the teenage male snarled and bent down to pick up something he’d dropped. Eunbi though, was too concerned about herself to even care and therefore didn’t pay attention to the unknown person, who now stood before her, “mm, sorry.” an half assed apology was the only thing she could muster, as her own problems were far worse than his. “Yeah. Sorry my .” Eunbi sighed, her focus somewhere else. And by the time she came around, the male had already disappeared off. She’d been so lost in trying to come up with a solution that she hadn’t taken notice of anything regarding the situation that’d just taken place. An ordeal that became a problem when Eunbi, a few moments later, let her hand slid down into her jean pocket, only to notice how it was empty. Confused, she glanced down and searched for the phone in the other pocket. It wasn’t there either. “I’m sure I brought it with me. B -.” horror struck the girl like a speeding train, “it can’t be. Did he?” she shook her head, why would he have stolen her cell phone? It didn’t make sense.

Enraged, the girl parted her lips and screamed.

She’d still not calmed down by the time she got back to her grandma’s house, something the old woman noticed right away, “there’s no need to slam the door shut, it’s done nothing wrong to you.” Eunbi was not in the mood for such jokes though, “my cell phone got stolen.” practically her whole life was on that damn device. Music, notes, phone numbers, important dates and appointments. And now it was gone. “Have you reported it?” No. There was no meaning when she most certainly wouldn’t get it back. Did the police even focus on such things as phone theft? “I’ll just ask mom for a new one.” she’s bound to give me one after everything she’s ignored, Eunbi added in her head. “Hm, have you become so spoiled that you get everything you want?” she wasn’t given a chance to reply before her grandmother continued, “I’m disappointed in you.” Eunbi was right about to explain that so wasn’t the case, that all the money she received was her monthly allowance, which wasn’t much, when Kyungsoo stepped out from his bedroom.

“Halmoni, I’m going to the supermarket now.” the old woman nodded in acknowledgment, “great. Eunbi you can go with Kyungsoo and help him choose dinner.”

The said supermarket was just down the street and took less than five minutes to reach. And as they arrived, Eunbi went to get a cart. “You choose.” she shook her head, still not in the mood, and pushed the cart forward. “Why not? I mean, wouldn’t it be better if you decided since you know what your family likes.” Kyungsoo said, completely clueless to everything that’d happened in her family. He didn’t know anything of the problems she’d faced. “They’re not my family.” Eunbi saw none of them as family, even her mother’s role was doubted, which, to anyone else, would be hard to understand. “Ouch, isn’t that a bit harsh?” she contemplated what to say for a moment, only to come to the conclusion that, no, it wasn’t too harsh. “Let’s eat spicy chicken soup then.” the suggestion had Kyungsoo dumbstruck, more so as Eunbi gave him a smile. The way she suddenly acted perplexed him. Then again, her cell phone had just been stolen so he let it slip, content with the fact that she’d chosen what they should buy.

And it was already starting to get dark outside by the time the they got back, something that had her grandmother wondering what they’d been up to and why it’d taken so long. “Kyungsoo showed me around.” truth to be told, it’d been more Eunbi showing him around, since, during the few hours they’d been out shopping, she’d gotten to know that he wasn’t from Daegu, but rather a small town one and half hour east of the city. But also how he was attending a university in Daegu and that his own grandparents were close friend of Eunbi’s grandma, and that’s why he was staying at their house. To be closer to school. It made sense then, why the old woman let a seemingly unknown person rent one of the rooms. Because he was the grandson of two good friends. “Did you see anything interesting?” Eunbi shrugged, the city looked exactly like it’s done when she left six months ago. Kyungsoo however, found it a bit more interesting and listed several things they’d passed by on their small trip around the neighbourhood. It’d been his first time to explore the city since he arrived in August, as school took up most of his days, and he was immensely thankful for that Eunbi showed him around the place that would be his home the coming three years. “That’s nice.” the old woman smiled and glanced down at the plastic bags they were holding, “I see you’ve found your dinner.” spicy chicken soup, a dish her mother used to make during the cold months of year. A delicious course that made Eunbi’s mouth water.

“Should I start making it?” it couldn’t be too long till Eunbi’s family arrived, and Kyungsoo wanted to make sure it was done by then. “That would be nice. And Eunbi, you can help too.” without a choice, the said girl headed over to the kitchen together with Kyungsoo, who started to unpack the groceries. “Is it okay if you cut the vegetables?” she nodded and went about to start rinsing them, all that whilst the male started to cut the chicken into sizeable pieces. It would take four hours for it to be ready to eat, an ordeal that made Eunbi a bit uneasy. Mainly because she was afraid her mother were going to show up before the food was done, and thereby cause some sort of scene. Her grandma showed up in the doorway a few moments later, as the two teenagers sat at the table, fixing with the dinner. “Can you two manage everything whilst I go over to Mrs. Lee for a while?” they were old enough to be able to take care of themselves, something both Eunbi and Kyungsoo agreed on, “we’ll do just fine.” and they did. For half an hour later the two of them lay on the floor in the living room, watching tv and waiting for the food to cook. The pain was close to nonexistent, something Eunbi took advantage of as she fell asleep.

The one thing that finally woke her up though, wasn’t her grandmother, nor Kyungsoo. But rather her own mother, whose loud voice had Eunbi waking with a startle. Slightly disorientated and tired, the girl let her gaze roam the surroundings, only to realize two things. Kyungsoo must’ve fallen asleep, too, for he sat up with half lidded eyes. Second, it wasn’t just her mother that stood there, staring at the two. But Luhan and Sehun as well.

Seeing them there set ablaze several unwanted emotions. She didn’t want to see the two males. “I want to talk to you right now.” the stern voice that usually had Eunbi listening was of no use this time around, as the girl stood up and walked right past them. She wasn’t going to make it easy and convenient for her mother to set everything right. “I’m talking to you.” don’t give in, don’t give in, don’t give in. She repeated those words over and over again inside her head whilst heading for the kitchen and the soup. “And I’m busy.” she retorted, ignoring the fact that Sehun and Luhan were watching. The latter couldn’t help but laugh at the situation, “so you’ve finally decided to grow a backbone huh?” Eunbi glared at him, standing firm in what she’d promised herself before leaving the house four days ago. That she wouldn’t take anymore crap from them. Her mother interrupted though, before she could snap at him. “Luhan you stay quiet.” every single thought slipped her mind, all but the one that expressed how surprised she was. It was the first time her mother stood up for her. It was shocking and completely unbelievable.

It took the whole dinner, which, much to Eunbi’s delight neither Luhan or Sehun ate from, as they both disliked spicy food, before Eunbi regained her composure again. But it wasn’t that simple and the girl wondered whether her mother actually believed everything would be alright from that point onward. Would the neglect and ignorance cease or was this just an attempt to lure her back home? Moreover, was anything going to change?
