Myung Soo and his mum walked into the restaurant and sat down.
“Umma, I’m so glad you decided to drop the idea of getting Jenny to pass all those tests.”
Myung Soo’s mum smirked, “Yes, she will no longer be required to do those tests.”
“So what changed your mind?”
“Well… I think that she’s not the right girl for you.”
“You’re righ- eh?!” Myung Soo looked at his mum in shock.
“Umma… wh-wh-why are you saying this?”
Myung Soo’s mum sat up straight and put her hand on top of Myung Soo’s hand, “The truth is, I’ve never liked your girlfriend.”
Myung Soo looked at her wide eyed, “But-But- then… why the marriage meeting?”
“Hahaha, since when did I say that it was a marriage meeting? I just said that we’ll be meeting her dad. You just assumed that it was going to be a marriage meeting.”
“So-so what’s going to happen? You want me to break up with Jenny? But I can’t.”
“My son, let me make it easier for you, choose that girl who you believe is the girl you spend the rest of your life with OR the woman who gave you your life in the first place.”
Myung Soo stood up and was about to leave when his mum grabbed his arm, “I don’t think that would be a good idea if you expect me to tell your future ex-girlfriend.”
Myung Soo hesitated before sitting back down; his eyes started to water as he pursed his lips together and looked away from his mum.
“What did Jenny ever do wrong? She’s a nice person, she’s smart and she’s capable of all tasks that you threw at her. Why?”
“Myung Soo ah, she might be all those things but she wasn’t raised properly and she’s her family financial standards will never meet ours.”
“Wh-What?”
“Oh come on now, a girl without a mother would have never been raised properly. There’s only so much a father can teach.”
Myung Soo’s phone rang and he saw that it was from you, he slowly put the phone near his ear.
—————Phone call—————
Myung Soo: Hey babe.
You: Hey Myungie! I’m at the entrance of the restaurant now.
Myung Soo: Eh? *looks at his mum*
You: What was that? You don’t want me to be here? *laughs*
Myung Soo: No, let me come out and get you.
You: Oh, okay. I’ll wait for you. Bye
Myung Soo: … oh, yeah. Bye.
————-End of phone call————
Myung Soo stood up and looked down at his mother nervously, “She’s here now.”
“Well then go out there and tell her before she makes a scene in here,” Myung Soo’s mum said sternly before taking a sip out of her cup.
Myung Soo took in a deep breath and walked outside.
You saw Myung Soo and ran up to him, “Myungie!”
Myung Soo hugged you and lightly pushed you away and bowed to your dad, “Anneonghaseyo.”
“Oh, neh. Anneonghaseyo. Look son,” your dad walked over to Myung Soo and put his hand on Myung Soo’s shoulder.
Myung Soo looked at your dad with a scared expression.
“I just hope the food in this restaurant is good because for the past week I’ve been eating so little because Jenny wanted me to lose a few centimetres on my waist,” your dad said as he walked towards the door.
“I’m going to go inside and let you two talk first. I seriously have to order something good because I’ve been missing out on so much this week.”
Your dad started walking and then turned around, “Hey, what table are you sitting at?”
“Um… urgh… table 7.”
Your dad nodded his head as he walked into the restaurant.
You turned to Myung Soo and smiled at him, “You look so nervous I kind of feel bad for you…”
Myung Soo bit his bottom lip as he put his head down. Immediately, your face went changed and you had a concerned look on your face.
“What’s wrong? Are you sick?”
“I-I-I-”
“Aigoo… you’re stuttering. You must me sick.”
“No, it’s just-” Myung Soo grabbed your arms and looked you straight in the eyes, “I can’t marry you.”
~~~~~Your POV~~~~~
I looked at Myung Soo with a blank expression. He-He doesn’t want to marry me? What did I do wrong?
“Wh-what?”
I have no idea what I’m feeling right now, my heart is saying two things; he doesn’t love me or he does love me and my head is saying two things; I saw it coming, his mum doesn’t like me or maybe it’s a sick joke that he’s decided to play on me.
I felt Myung Soo grab my hands, “Jenny ah… please, it’s not what I wanted.”
I jerked my hand away from him, “Then what do you want, huh? Why are you doing this? Are you joking with me?”
“Jenn-”
“No,” I put my hand up, “No, don’t tell me that this isn’t a joke. I don’t want to hear it?”
I closed my eyes and rubbed my temples.
“My mother said that it was either you or her and…”
I laughed, seriously. I find that there’s nothing wrong when a guy listens to his parents but this is just ridiculous. It’s not like I asked him to cut all ties with his mum. Why is she making me sound like a bad person?
“What? Your mum put you up to this?”
“She-she-”
Tears started flowing down my eyes, my heart was hearting and my legs felt paralysed.
“I did everything right…” I said as I kind of wondered off into my own world.
“I worked so hard to pass the tests… I didn’t even fail a single one…”
And the song that I was writing, I didn’t even get to finish it…
“Who am I going to dedicate the song to now?!” I pushed Myung Soo, tears pouring out from my eyes like a waterfall.
“Jenny-sshi… you’re creating a scene…”
I scoffed, “Jenny-sshi? You’re already cutting ties with me?”
I fell down on my knees and sat there in front of the restaurant, crying.
“What is going on here?!” I heard my dad’s voice.
I turned around and hugged my dad, “Appa… the marriage…”
“It’s off,” I heard Myung Soo’s mum say.
I looked up at her and continued crying. Why was she like this to me? I did nothing wrong by her.
“What?” My dad helped me stand up, “Why on earth would you call us here to meet us if the kids were to not get married?”
“Because I wanted my son to tell your daughter that they can’t marry and you’re here because well, she might do something foolish like commit suicide when she hears the news so that’s why you’re here.”
I heard my dad’s knuckle crack and I looked down at his hands and they were very pale.
“Appa…” I tried to calm him down but I, myself was still crying. Why is this happening to me? Everything used to be so good… so… so close to perfect.
“For your information, your son’s life is that precious for my daughter to lose hers,” my dad pointed his finger at Myung Soo’s mum, “I know women like you, and you’re a disgrace to the other females out there like my daughter. You’re the type of person that wrecks people’s lives and you do it at all costs until you’re happy.”
Myung Soo’s mum scoffed, “Well, you’re the type of man that all women leave. I’m surprised that your wife left and left your daughter behind.”
I felt Myung Soo staring at me and I just dug my head into my dad’s chest.
“I know that there’s a lot of things a father can’t teach to his daughter and I know that, but as long as a father puts love and effort into it and his child has grown up to be a person who’s contributing to society and are an example of a good civilian of society then all those things don’t mean anything.”
“Appa… let’s just go.” I tried to pull my dad away but he held his place.
He pointed at Myung Soo, “You! You are not a man. A man respects his mother but creates a boundary. That boundary doesn’t mean to rebel against her and do bad things but that boundary is him creating his own independence. That boundary is the thing that draws the line between a boy and a man. Growing facial hair and having a deep voice has nothing to do with being a man.”
My dad turned around and led me to the car and helped me get inside.
I know that my dad is terribly hurt by this; my dad never raises his voice, not even when he’s frustrated or upset. How could I lose such an important person today? Myung Soo was everything to me… I love him so much. Why? Why did he have to hurt me? Of all people. He was the last person I suspected to hurt me. Myung Soo… I love you so much. Don’t leave me so suddenly.
“Neh, Eun Hee ah, is that you?” I had my dad talk on the phone on loudspeaker mode.
“Neh Mr Lee, it’s me. What’s happening? Aren’t you meant to be talking to Myung Soo-”
“Don’t bother mentioning his name or his mother in front of me or Jenny.”
“Eh?”
“Look, things didn’t go so well today and I think it’s best if you and Ji Won come over to my house and comfort Jenny. She’s in need of her friends right now.”
“Oh! What happened to Jenny?! Jenny ah!”
I tried to hide my shaken voice, “Eun Hee ah, I’m fine.”
“She’s not. Just grab Ji Won and come over to my house and comfort Jenny.”
“Neh! I’ll be right over.”
I turned to my dad and gave him an apologetic look. I really didn’t want him to see this. The worries that are going through his mind right now, gosh, I hate making others worry because of me. I wanted to cry again but then I wiped my tears away because I knew my dad would tell me something funny to get me to stop crying anyways.
“You know, you don’t have to give me that look, there’s nothing for you to apologise for. The only apology I want is from the boy and his stuck up mother.”
“Appa…” I said in a tone to tell him that he was being a little mean.
“What? It’s true? I mean, she seriously looked as if something was stuck up her ass. Don’t you realise the way she walks? It’s like this,” my dad then wriggled in his seat while putting on a ‘posh’ face.
I laughed, “Appa… you know, I can just talk to you first and I’ll talk to my friends tomorrow or something.”
“Jenny ah, there’s only so much a father can do as you heard in my awesome speech earlier. I know that you’re hurt and you want a shoulder to cry on. But I, myself know that I won’t be able to help you as much as your friends can but I will always be the toughest, more reliable shoulder you will ever lean on, so if you want to sit down and watch a chick flick, I’ll withstand that for you.”
I laughed as I wiped away my tears. My dad then whacked my arm away.
“Yah, I might not know a lot about this make up thing but I know that it’s not good to rub. Here,” my dad passed me a tissue, “dab it instead so the mask-mask… you know, that black thingy, doesn’t go everywhere.”
I laughed and grabbed the tissue, “It’s called mascara and thank you.”
I dabbed away my tears and turned to my dad, “Appa… I love you.”
“I know,” my dad smiled before gasping, “Wait, so if you love me, then I won’t have to wake up at 5:30 every morning and run?”
“Yes,” I chuckled, “you can wake up at 6.”
“What?!”
