Prologue

Winter, 2088 BC

            Snow gently fell to the frozen ground as a wounded white fox darted deep into the forest. She looked behind her and increased her speed as she saw the group of villagers chasing after her

            "She can’t be far!” shouted one of them. “We’ll get her soon!”

             “HEAR, HEAR!” chanted another. “We’ve already got her mate! She won’t be able to fight for much longer!”

            The villagers were right; the young fox wasn’t going to make it much longer. Her left hind leg was bleeding heavily, but more importantly, her willpower to live was rapidly decreasing. She soon stopped running and fell to the ground. There was no reason for her to fight her destiny now. Her mate was gone and there would be nothing to live for anymore.

             “Don’t think that,” whispered a soft voice.

            The fox immediately hopped to her feet, ready to run again.

             “I’m not going to hurt you Eunji,” whispered the same voice.

            The fox looked around but to her surprise, she didn’t find any one around her.

             “Look in front of you,” commanded the voice.

            Curious, the fox did what the voice asked of her and was surprised to find that there suddenly was a man crouching in front of her. Before she process that fact, the man scooped her up in his arms and gently ran his fingers through her soft white fur.

             “There, there,” he cooed. “Don’t worry sweetie; I’m not here to kill you. You know who I am.”

            The fox laid her head down on his arm, recognizing him as Cho Kyuhyun, the Demon King.

             “He had a good life,” Kyuhyun commented as he started walking. “You’ll see him again.”

            This time, the young fox raised her head and looked at the demon with her big blue eyes.

             “I’ve given you the offer many times Eunji,” continued the demon. “You’ve always said no to me because he was alive, but now that he’s gone, you can’t say no anymore.”

            Eunji laid her head back down on the demon’s arm again, not knowing what or how to respond to him.

             “Don’t you want to avenge his death?” Kyuhyun prompted. “Don’t you want to see Donghae again Eunji?”

            The fox stayed still as Kyuhyun kept walking. She could hear the cries of the villagers and hatred started to replace the pain in her heart. Yes, the men who killed her beloved deserved to be hurt the same way she was.

             “Good choice,” the demon nodded approvingly. “Ah, here we are.”

            Eunji raised her head and saw a glowing cave in front of her. Kyuhyun gently kissed the top of her head and ruffled her fur one last time.

             “Go,” commanded the demon as he gently set her down. “I’ll take care of them for you, sweetie. Don’t worry; I’ll make them suffer Hell and back before they die.”

            The fox nodded and slowly limped to the opening of the cave. But before she went inside, she looked back at the Demon King.

             “Go on,” Kyuhyun repeated. “You can do it. If anything, do it for Donghae. I’ll be out here waiting for you when you come out.”

            Eunji nodded and took one last look at the world around her, knowing that this was going to be the last time in the next thousand years that she would be able to see the sun.

             “For Donghae,” whispered the Demon King. “You can do it Eunji. It’ll only be a thousand years.  You can do it.”

            The fox sighed and nodded. She turned to face the burning inferno in the cave and limped inside. As soon as she was fully inside the cave, a giant boulder abruptly rolled down the mountain and sealed the cave close. Kyuhyun gave the boulder a small smile before he turned around. His eyes glowed red as he teleported himself to the village. Time to massacre, he smirked. So you think you can just intrude on my forest, kill my friends and get away with it? I don’t think so.
