The Ring
~flow19~

I could still remember the time when Wu Fan’s mother gave me to him.

“It’s not a promise ring.. It’s not a purity ring either.” She shook her head when he nearly spat out the water he was drinking. “I want you to take care of this. Don’t lose it whatever happens.”

“What is it for then?”

The raven haired lady took out a chain from her pocket, inserting it through the ring before clasping the necklace around his neck. “One day, you’re going to meet a girl who you’re going to fall in love with for the rest of your life and when you do, give this to her.”

“What if she never comes?”

“We’re all meant for someone in this world, Wu Fan.”

From that day on, I remained just where I was placed.

Wu Fan wasn’t your average guy. You’d be blind not to see that to be quite honest with you. A striking face, a taller than average height, a smile that lights up his whole face… He had it all. It never really surprised me that almost every girl that he encountered would show some tell-tale sign of attraction. It almost seemed like I didn’t have to wait too long to be given away.

But it wasn’t really the case, unfortunately.

I’m sure he hadn’t forgotten his mother’s wise words for him back then. We’re all meant for someone in this world, Wu Fan. But even then, he had remained aloof and intimidating even. He had worn this expression – what everyone normally referred to as the face – and it was enough for people, especially women, to avoid him. It was a problem, most of all for me.

How was I going to be given away now?

Sure, he dated from time to time but those relationships never lasted long. I never really understood why sometimes while during other times, I couldn’t help but agree with his decisions. Those girls didn’t deserve him. Behind that exterior everyone saw was a guy who was kind and loving and thoughtful and sensitive to other people’s feelings. Many were attracted to him physically and wanted him for how he looked. When I thought of it that way, I couldn’t blame the guy. He was still young. There was still a lot of time.

As luck would have it, things changed – something that was normal in life. Wu Fan had always been a decent singer and dancer and, coupled with his good looks, he could make it to the entertainment industry. Luck seemed to agree and before we both knew it, he was leaving Vancouver for Seoul. I was happy for him. I really was. But I couldn’t help but think that it also meant that I’d be stuck with him longer. It wouldn’t be easy to communicate with anyone, regardless of gender, with you had a language barrier.

I was happy he kept me, still looped around a chain that was clasped around his neck. A part of me thought he’d get rid of me once he was out of his mother’s sight. It made me believe that a part of him still had faith in his mother’s words that one day, he’d fall in love with the girl he was meant to spend the rest of his life with. The fact made me hopeful that someday, Wu Fan would truly be happy.

I could still remember his first day in SM – the first time he saw her

He was more silent than usual, probably because he knew no one and he knew nothing about the language. He was walking behind a staff member, following her to an office, when they passed by a room that blaring music. Even if he didn’t want to peek, it was pointless thanks to his height and through the glass window on the door he saw a group of girls – around eleven of them – dancing.

That was the exact time he first saw her. She was different… and no, it wasn’t because she was slimmer and not as fair as everyone else. Probably, it was her uniqueness that attracted him to her. The girl had a bright smile that made her eyes twinkle. Her tan skin was flawless. She was different yet beautifully so. He held onto me the rest of the way to the office and just by his simple touch, I knew something in him had changed.

It was days after that when he finally got to meet her… and it was in a less than ideal way. Her name is Choi Sooyoung and at that time, she and ten other girls were so close to debuting. But it turned out that two wouldn’t make it and one happened to be her best friend. Wu Fan had been wandering around the building that d
