To The Uncertain Me

Prologue

“Tae Joon,”

The Olympic medalist tore his gaze from the houses that lined the street and turned to his father with a smile. It had been a long time since they had reconciled, and were comfortably in their roles of father and son again. Despite the independence that his son had had, Geun Wook was worried. Here he was on the other side of the planet with a fake name and new life, all in the name of some guy- er, girl.

It had taken a very lot of explaining and convincing.

“Dad, my name is Minho now,” Tae Joon said, looking around suspiciously but only seeing the move in crew. His summer in Korea had been the worst. There was no Jae Hee to romance, no Han Na to evade, no Cha Eun Gyul to compete with, and Ji Chul was back with his family. In short he had been lonely and couldn’t stand the thought of going through a whole other school year without Jae Hee.

So he decided to come to America and spend his senior year here.

It wasn’t easy getting his father to understand and agree, and the extensive English lessons he committed his every waking hour to was hell. Plus, the press was also following him, and he knew that if he went to America some would follow and see Jae Hee and…Hence the fake name. Here he was just Minho, some randomly handsome international student. Randomly handsome, international, and dating Goo Jae Hee…

 Whatever, he was here now and able to properly date his unofficial girlfriend.

“You just remember that you’re Kang Tae Joon, alright? Your mother and I didn’t take weeks naming you for nothing.” Geun Wook pulled a handkerchief out his pocket and mopped his sweaty forehead. “It is hot out here…”

“That’s right,” Tae Joon moved closer and opened the car door, “Inside the car is cooler Dad,”

“Trying to run me off already? Ah, when I was a kid my father would’ve beaten me if I tried to leave the country for a girl,” he said this as he got in, sighing happily as the ac vent released cold air onto him. Tae Joon nodded to the driver. “I’ll call you when I land Tae Joon. I am trusting you with this, okay?”

Jae Hee smiled and sighed. Eun Gyul’s new hairstyle once again looked good on him. It was nice to see him smile so sincerely again. For some reason, her heart had quickened seeing an email from him. Probably because there would be information about Tae Joon.

“Everyone seems to be doing well,” she mused. She wondered if he and that girl had reconnected. She would feel sad if he wasn’t moving on. “He should have told me more about Tae Joon.” She paused, wondering what he was doing. She had all the magazines he had appeared in after his win. He would do great next time around if he trained even harder. The life of an Olympian was hard if they went back for more medals. “I wonder how he’s doing?”

She reached for her notebook. She had written what he’d been doing last time they talked, and she had forgotten what it was. Accidently it fell to the ground and she bent over to pick it up.

There she was. This was it. This was the happily ever after moment. He’d walk over, she look up, he’d say something witty and he would pull her into his arms. After that it was going to be a whirlwind of that sappy stuff you saw in books but never believed happened in real life. He was about to make that happen right now.

He walked forward.

The look up, check…

Witty remark, check…

Holding her tenderly like the ending scene of a movie, ch-

“Jae Hee?”

Tae Joon broke away from her, turning his gaze to the person walking up holding two bottles of juice. They were eyeing him warily, concern flickering every few seconds. This person, Tae Joon thought, was pretty. Too pretty to be a guy, right? His chest length hair, feminine features, slim build…

“Ah, this is Taemin, my cousin,” she said.

The younger’s eyes swept the elder’s form, curious and somewhat indifferent. Tae Joon was stunned. This actually was a guy? “Hey,”

“Taemin, Oppa’s transferring here for his last year. Let’s help him get along with the others, okay?” The two stared at each other, not really knowing the strange feeling coming over them. This was the happily ever after moment…

So why did it feel like the beginning of something much bigger and dangerous?
