Foreword

There weren’t stars in the sky tonight, and the moon was smaller than usual. Still, its company wasmore than enough, as there wasn’t anybody else better to be with me. Through the closed windows, I couldstill hear some crowds on the streets cheering for no reason. Or perhaps, for a reason I’d forgotten.

I curled on the couch gazing into the cold, still air. TV muted. Mozart’s symphonies on repeat though no one was listening. I pickedup the remote and muted it, as it failed to make me feel better. Dead silence. There was nothing but emptiness in this chic, elegantly furnished apartment. I’ve tried most of the available ways of entertaining myself in this place and still, I am more bored than I should be, in my first month of marriage with the man I see as the love of my life. Apparently, he finds working a little more important than me, and therefore he’s been flying around the globe since the second week of our marriage. As he’s a pilot, this should be seen as responsible, I convince myself.

I uncurled myself and shook my numb feet, then slipped into my cozy slippers. Half walking, half sliding, I went into the bedroom. Our bedroom, I remind myself. This apartment doesn’t belong to me, but us. Kicking off my slippers, I laid my back on the king-size bed with my arms stretched to both sides. The ceiling looked paler and duller than it used to be even when lit by a warm, yellowish lamp besides me on the side table.

What are you doing now? I wondered.

“Ding dong!”

The sound shocked me as I haven’t heard it for quite a while. I swiftly put my slippers on and hastened towards the big, mahogany front door. I fixed my hair on the mirror next to me, felt my heart racing and finally, opened the door after taking a deep breath.

“Good evening miss. You’ve got an urgent parcel. Please sign here.” A postman saidpolitely. In disappointment, I tookhis pen and scribbled something on his paper, receivedthe parcel and closedthe door. I sighed, tossed the parcel onto the sofa then stretched my arms again with a tiny yawn.

The parcel was wrapped in newspaper of different languages. After staring at it for a minute, I made up my mind and started unwrapping it with care. Layers and layer of paper were torn off one by one, and the tease ended with a palm-size wooden box, a note, a map and… an air ticket to Hong Kong with a hotel card.I unfolded the note and read,

I miss you. I know you miss me too. So, here’s the game: find me. – The love of your life.

I grinned. This guy always interests me. I wonder what’s on his mind. I have nothing to do anyway, why not? I’m coming for you, Kim Himchan. I didn’t even bother wearing my slippers anymore, and started packing up my luggage.
