I suddenly sat up, tears faling down my cheeks. Shit! I dreamt about mom and dad again!
"Are you okay?" a voice came from beside me. I turned to see Kikwang rubbing his eyes beside the bed. The wet towel from my forehead fell onto my lap.
"Y-You were sleeping here?" I asked.
"Yeah," he said.
"Because you had a fever. Oh yeah." He turned towards the bowl of water by the bed and turned back to face me with a cup of drinking water and a medicine pill. "Here," he handed me the medicine. His hand instantly went up to my head and I flinched back. He compared my forehead heat with his. "Ah, your fever went down, whew!" he blew a sigh of relief. "Take the medicine. It'll help your fever cool down and take some pain off your shoulders. Oh, you might want to re-bandage it too." he said as he handed me the cup of water and stood up. He walked towards the door and was about to open it.
"T-Thank you," I said as I looked down.
Out of the corner of my eye, I see him scratch the back of his neck and mutter, "It's nothing." He gave a small chuckle and said, "Wait here, I'll bring the bandages." Then he walked out and closed the door.
I looked at the medicine in my hand. I ate it and chugged the water down. I set it back down beside the bed and saw teh wet towel. It was cold and still moist. He must've watched me for the whole night, I thought. I laid back down with the towel in my hand above my head. The door opened and I instantly sat up again.
"Ah," Kikwang said and bowed. "Sorry, here's the bandage," he set the new bandages by the bed. "U-um... d-do you need help with the b-bandages?" he asked, stuttering.
"Ah, um... I think I can do it myself," I said back and he nodded. Then, he walked out of the room again. I better change my bandage now, I thought. I sat up fully and took off my shirt, showing only my red laced bra underneath. The bandages cover my right shoulder under the bra strap. To unwrap it, I'd have to slide the strap off. Damn it! It's gonna hurt. I started to slide the strap off and tried to get my hand through. My elbow went through my I had to put it back because pain surged through my shoulders, making me wince. Again! I quickly pulled the strap off as enormous pain went through my whole body and I screamed.
Kikwang came running into the room, "What happened?" he asked and looked at me and instantly turning around. I pulled the blanket around me and my face grew a dark shade of red.
"Sorry, sorry. I didn't mean to.... um..." he stuttered.
"It's fine..." I said. "U-um... c-can you help me w-with this?" I asked, turning redder by the second. I'm gonna need his help...
"W-with my bandage. c-can you h-help me?" I asked, while my insides secretly wished he'd say yes. Shut up Min-ah! I just need his help... That's all... Yeah, that's all... right?
"A-ah, y-yeah," he hesitantly said.
"I'll turn around and tell you when you can turn around," I said.
"Oh, okay." I turned around, sitting cross-legged on the bed, my back to him. I grabbed my shirt and wrapped it around my body and grabbed the blanket for extra cover.
"O-okay, I'm cover now." I heard some shuffling noises and then Kikwang's hand touched my bandaged shoulder. I flinched at his touch.
"S-sorry. Does it hurt? Sorry," he kept apologizing and I imagined him bowing down to my back. His hand slightly move around a bit, and I'm suggesting that he's still bowing... he's so funny, and cute.... WAIT WHAT!! I shook my head. Get your head straight! I yelled at myself.
"Ah, it's alright," I reassured him.
He stopped apologizing and told me he was going to continue. I nodded and I felt his hands undoing the bandage. Time seemed to stop as the bandage came off my shoulders. Then I felt a slight breeze on my bare shoulders and shudder at the sudden coldness. My skin had goosebumps and I hoped Kikwang didn't see them. Thankfully he didn't and continued to apply medicine on my wound. I let out a small scream as the medicine went inside the bullet wound. I squeezed the blanket tight until my knuckles turned white. "Does it hurt?" Kikwang asked. I think he saw me stiff up.
"A-a little..." I barely whispered. He heard me though and started blowing on the wound.
"A little bit better?" he asked. I nodded. I was glad he didn't see my burning red face. He continued the process: adding medicine and blowing on it. He then started to bandage my shoulder. When he was finished he waited for me to put on my shirt then laid me down and told me to get some rest.
He was about to leave but I didn't want him to leave yet so I grabbed onto his wrist which stopped him and said, "Ki-kwang?" He turned to look at me.
"Um... c-can you..." I hesitantly said, more like a whisper.
"Can... can you stay with me until I-I fall asleep?" I asked.
"Ah... Yeah," he said and took a seat next to the bed. There was an awkward silence until he broke it. "S-so Min-ah-sshi..." he asked.
"Y-yeah?" I looked at him.
"U-um... I was just wondering about... about what you were dreaming about last night..." he said and scratched the back of his neck... He does that alot... Does he do it because he's nervous? "I-I mean, it's not my business but you seemed really hurt from it and I just wanted to know what it was."
"Oh, that?" I didn't know what to do. Nobody has ever asked that to me before and I've never told anyone about it either.
"You don't have to tell me, I was just curious..." he said with an awkward chuckle.
"It's fine," I said. Then I told everything to him...
~~~~No one's POV~~~~~~~~~~
It was a very long time ago. You were around the age of 8. Your mother and father were the best and most loving parents ever. You were treated like a princess in a run down apartment. Your dad works at the restaurant across the street and your mom worked for you uncle a few blocks away. Your life was not too horrible but not so great. Although your parents had enough money to pay for your education, you were always picked around at school. You went to school from ages 7 to age 10. Thats when you found out everything. Your loving parents were not all that loving. Your dad started to get tired of you and your mom. You would come home from school and hear them yelling at each other.
"I'm so sick and tired from this life. Why won't you just sell our daughter for millions of money and live a perfectly happy life?!" your dad shouted at your mom.
"How can you say that? She's your own blood! She's MY daughter! I'm not gonna have my daughter living a horrible slave life while I enjoy the happiness of money... Are you even human to say that? How can you say that... about YOUR OWN DAUGHTER?!!" your mom shouted back.
The arguments would continue and you'd just walk into your room like nothing happened. Instead, you got quite used to the yellings, until one day.
That day, you had finally turned 16 and were close to finishing your highschool years. You were in your room just doing your homework when another argument started. You ignored it because it was normal to hear them shouting. Then, BANG! you heard a loud crash, sort of like glass. You dropped your pencil and rushed out to the livingroom to see you mom lying on the floor her leg bleeding and a glass pottery thrown to the side. Your dad was drunk and swaying around in the kitchen. You ran to your mom, shaking her, trying to see if she was still alive. "Omma... OMMA! Wake up! WAKE UP!" Your mom twitched so you knew she was still alive. You were so angry, you have had enough of the arguments and your dad had gone too far today. You ran inside your room, grabbed your bat (you kept it for safety reasons) and walked right up to your dad. He was really drunk, and still looking for more alcohol to chug down. He turned to see your angry face staring at him.
"Oh hello there my baby girl! I haven't seen you in a while. Where have you been?" He said and tried to grab you. You swung the bat once and smacked him right in the head. He stumbled and his head was bleeding but you didn't care. You didn't care if he died by your hands tonight or not. "Girl! That's not how you treat your father! Haven't I taught you better?!"
"No, you didnt..." you said and took another swing aiming for his head. This time, he got lucky and ducked. He grabbed hold of the bat and pulled you forward. He hugged you and his hand traveled down to your lower back. You screamed and pushed him away. He had your bat now, and threw it across the kitchen.
"Come here baby girl, Daddy wants to teach you something new," he said and motioned you forward. You knew exactly what he had in mind and stepped back. He ran forward though, before you could run out and grabbed your wrist and pulled you close. Now, your eyes were watery and you were struggling against him. You had no way you could've beaten his old strength. You tried and tried to get out of his embrace but he just kept holding onto you. His lips traveled from your ears down to your neck. "Baby girl, you gonna like what I'mma teach you tonight..." he said as you screamed and his hand went to grab hold of you butt cheek. Before you knew it, glass shattered onto his head and he fell back letting you free. Your eyes were watering wet and you saw your mother limping and holding onto a liqour bottle, half broken. Your mother pulled you into a tight hug and comforted you.
"It's alright now. It's alright Min-ah, it's alright. I'm here now, you'll be okay," you mom said as you cried into her shoulder. That night, your mother slept with you, doors locked and you father still lying unconcious in the kitchen.
The next day, your mother didn't wake you up for school. She made breakfast and set it by your bed with a note. For the rest of the day, you didn't see your mother or your father. When you woke up, you were left alone in the bed, the house, and your life. You read the note:
To my baby girl Min-ah,
Daughter, I'm so sorry I had to leave you
You know I love you right? No matter what happens, just know that I love you.
I would never want anything bad to happen to you.
That's why I have to say I won't be able to teach and experience your life with you.
Fate is what holds us together.
I hope you find someone you love and I wish they will take care of you,
much better than how your dad and I took care of you.
You don't need to be afraid anymore Min-ah,
your dad is going with me.
As much as I'd hate to leave you alone,
I'd hate myself even more if the monster did something to you
Last night, I couldn't help but understand what he could and could not do to you.
I hope you understand me.
Be strong Min-ah.
And always know I will always be with you and help you in any way I can.
I Love You...... Don't forget that...
Love, Your loving mother,
Lee Hwa Young
