The next day, Kris came early to school. However, Jungah wasn’t there.
He slowly sat in his seat with a dismal glance at her empty desk. *Is she not coming to school today? Then I have no purpose to be here either…*
Mr. Kim came in and called attendance.
There was no reply.
Everyone glanced back at her vacant seat.
“Is Han Jungah not here today?” Mr. Kim blinked in confusion. Although she was a delinquent student, she had never missed a day in class before. Mr. Kim marked her absent, “Well then…Lee Sukhoon-“
The door burst open. Everyone looked up.
Jungah was standing there, and she looked terrible.
“Omo. What happened to her? Another fight?” The students murmured.
Jungah ignored them and went straight to her desk. She overlooked Kris completely and sat at her desk. Mr. Kim cleared his throat and said in a stern voice that didn’t sound threatening at all. “Please be on time next time, or I’ll have to give you detention.” Jungah acted as if she didn’t hear him and just looked out the window.
Mr. Kim continued calling out the names. Finished, he began the instruction for the day.
Kris turned his attention to Jungah. Her poker-face was back on. However, she looked more exhausted than usual. By her swollen, red eyes and wane face, he knew she had been crying all night. *I have to ask her at lunch. I need to know who that man really is. Her friend, her lover, or her brother.* Kris determined.
Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, the lunch bell rang.
Students immediately filed towards the cafeteria.
Jungah, on the other hand, went in the opposite direction towards the auditorium. She sat in her usual seat in the middle of the rows and placed her earphones in her ears. She had played the music when someone yanked the earphone out of her ear. Her piercing eyes stabbed at the offender.
Kris gazed down at her with an intent, sharp expression. “We need to talk.”
“I have nothing o say.” Jungah yanked her earphone back and put it in her ear.
Kris rolled his eyes. He bent down and grabbed her ipod from her.
Jungah gritted her teeth in impatience, “I’m not in the mood for any of your games today. So just give me my ing ipod back, and go your ing merry way.” She held out her hand.
“Yesterday, Jihan or Jiwoo or whoever the his name is, who is he to you?” He asked.
Jungah stood up and glared murderously at him, “I don’t know what the hell your problem is, but you need to stay the hell out of my life.” She grabbed her ipod from him and walked away.
Kris walked after her. He grabbed her arm. She spun around and swung her fist his way. Kris was quick though, and he grabbed her wrist just in time before her hand could collide with his face. Jungah struggled, “Let go of me, you bastard-“
Kris grabbed both her arms and shoved her into the wall. He pinned her wrists against the wall.
Jungah crazily thrashed, “Release me, or I swear I’ll kick you so hard you won’t be able to have any spawns-“
Kris pressed her body against his so that she had no room to kick him. She could feel his heart beating against hers.
“Kick me. I dare.” He hissed. She glared at him, “Why are you doing this to me? What is it that you want from me?”
“I want to know who that man is to you.” Kris stated.
“Why does it matter to you? Why should you care who Zico is or not?!” Jungah snapped.
“It matters to me because the girl that I love may be infatuated with her own goddamn brother!” Kris sneered back.
Her eyes slightly rounded, and formed into an ‘O’. *I heard it wrong, right? He didn’t just call me the girl that he loves…did he?*
Kris searched her eyes. He could see right through her. “You’re in love with him…aren’t you?” He thinly whispered.
Jungah looked away. Her heart was beating hard. She had been caught by a transfer student. Nobody had guessed, or nobody had even dared say out loud, that she was in love with Woo Jiho.
Kris’s face fell, “So I’m right? Goddamit, Han Jungah! Don’t you know how ing wrong that is?! He’s your own brother! You can’t love him that way! That’s called , and it’s illegal and immoral!”
“He’s not my biological brother.” Jungah growled.
“…What?” Kris asked, stunned.
Jungah looked up at him, “Zico is, no…was…my stepbrother.” His eyes widened. *Stepbrother.*
“And he’s not even that anymore since both our parents died.” She muttered.
Kris’s grip loosened. His hands fell by his sides in shock. “He is your stepbrother?” “Was.” Jungah corrected as she looked at the ground. It was silent for a while then Kris questioned, “How did that happen?”
Jungah rolled her eyes, “That happens when your parents marry each other, you .”
He stared at her. She sighed, “I don’t have a dad. Zico doesn’t have a mom either. My mom met his dad. I didn’t even know she was dating someone. But out of the blue, she told me she already signed a registration for marriage with someone named Woo Taesung, and that I would soon have a dad and an older brother.” *Whoever knew that would be Woo Jiho, my first love?*
“And your older brother turned out to be…him?” Kris asked.
Jungah slowly nodded.
He balked in disbelief. She sighed in agreement, “I know. It’s a ed up story. I know it’s a love story that will never happen. As long as Zico’s dedicated personality doesn’t change, nothing will happen. He’s all up for staying as my stepbrother. Who do you think pays my bills, keeps a roof over my head, clothes me, and feeds me? It’s all him.”
Kris stared at her, “And even if he feels that way…you’ll continue to be in love with him?”
Jungah gazed back at him, “I’ve been in love with him for six years. I tried to forget him. Trust me. I hoped the feelings would fade. But they’ve only gotten stronger.”
Kris’s heart dropped in dejection. *Even though she knows it will never work out, she can’t give him up.*
*. I’ve said too much. I’ve never told anyone about my feelings for Zico.* Jungah awkwardly looked away, “If you’re done with the Spanish Inquisition, I’d like to go somewhere and be alone.” She walked out of the room.
Kris stood there, stunned and crushed. *She likes someone else. She’s in love with him. Her heart is already taken.* Although he realized that, his heart wasn’t changing its mind. It was pugnacious and had made up its mind already.
It was going to stick with Jungah…until the end.
Kris leaned against the wall with a cumbersome sigh. *What have I gotten myself into?*
