Description

For the past month, everyday has been a dilemma for me; I’ve been facing bullies, getting ambushed by anti-fans, then getting ambushed again by fans. I’ve had to put up with weird drinking habits and – weird habits in general. I’ve experienced joy, pain, hate, love and another rollercoaster of emotions. Why you ask? Because for the past month, I’ve been living as the daughter of the longest-lived idol group; Shinhwa.

“So what is your name?” Eric asked me.

“Venus,” I replied.

Eric and Minwoo stared at me, I smiled at them.

“I mean, what is your real name?” Minwoo laughed.

I glanced at the PD behind Eric who was giving me the cross sign; I was not supposed to tell them my name yet

“Venus,” I said shortly and then smiled.

“So, Venus,” Minwoo smiled, but it sounded more like Bhenus than anything else.

“Don’t call me that,” I said.

Minwoo gave me an annoyed look, “you just said that was your name!” he exclaimed.

“I said it was Venus, not Bhenus!” I exclaimed.

Eric burst out laughing while Minwoo’s expression slowly changed from cheerful to irritated.

“So Venus,” Minwoo tried again, this time emphasizing the ‘V’, “do you want to take your mask off?”

The PD gave me the cross sign again. I was not supposed to show my face yet. But why they had not told this to Shinhwa was totally beyond me.

“No”, I said curtly. “I can’t, sorry.”

Minwoo stared at me in disbelief. Eric started laughing hysterically and almost fell off his chair. Why he was laughing like this was totally beyond me.

I sat in the café and waited. There were many people hurrying about around me; it looked like preparations for a party were going on. I straightened my mask and looked around. Then I caught sight of Junjin and Dongwan entering the room, they had a whole little filming crew following them. Junjin spotted me right away and started walking towards me.

“Remember you can’t answer any of their questions,” a crew member told me. “They will have to identify you later, so don’t make it easy,” she reminded me. I nodded.

“Annyeonghaseyo!” Junjin and Dongwan chorused as they stood in front of me with big smiles.

I stood up and gave a light bow.

“Are you our daughter?”

“What is your name?”

“Can we see your face?”

“Do you go to school?”

The two of them bombarded me with questions. I stared at them, unable to answer. I glared at the PD; had he again failed to tell them that I was not allowed to talk? The PD shook his head; I stared at him in disbelief. He was being so evil. I didn't know how to react to the situation. So I did the only thing I could think of there and then, no matter how childish it was. I turned around and ran away.

“Wait, come back!” I heard Junjin yell as the two of them started after me.

“First question; who is the eldest in Shinhwa?” the PD asked.

“Andy?” I guessed. He seemed more mature than the others anyway.

Suddenly there was a commotion in the room as all the Shinhwa members burst out laughing, all except one; Andy sat in a corner, his face between his hands. He looked utterly distressed.

“What’s wrong?” I asked the PD.

“Andy is the youngest,” he said, “and he’s quite sensitive about his age.”

 

“Are those bruises on your face?” Minwoo asked concerned. “Have you been fighting?”

I stood there, silent, perfectly aware that Dongwan was glaring daggers at me.

“Minwoo hyung, where are you?” I heard Junjin’s voice call from the hallway. “Oh, what happened to her?” Junjin asked as he appeared in the room, followed by Eric who widened his eyes at me.

“Well, I –” I started.

“Excuse me, you can’t behave like that!” Dongwan yelled at me before leaving the room.

 

“Hey, don’t forget your lunch!” Hyesung called after me as he got out of the car with a cameraman following him.

I really wanted to accept but I didn’t think I wanted Hyesung appa’s hard work to go to the bullies for lunch time.

“I don’t want it,” I said, running away, aware of the crowd of students that was gathering to watch us.

“Take it!”

“I won’t have time to eat; I’m working even on lunch time!” I protested.

“I’ve put a banana in there, you can just eat it quickly! It contains vitamin C” Hyesung insisted, then proceeded to lecture me about the benefits of banana and why it was important to eat lunch. I could see other students snickering from the corner of my eye.

 

I sat in the empty room, facing a camera and a screen.

‘What are your thoughts for this first week?’ flashed across on screen.

There was a long silence.

“I want to go back home!”

Foreword

Early March , 2012

 

The six Shinhwa members sat in the Mnet waiting room, each doing his own thing, totally ignoring the cameras in the room.

 

Dongwan and Minwoo were bothering Eric, who was trying to sleep, while Junjin was exercising and Hyesung chatted with Andy. Suddenly a beep sound shook them all from their respective occupations. They turned their heads just in time to see a cue card fall from the ceiling.

 

“Oh not again!” Andy exclaimed as the other members dived towards the card.

 

Hyesung just sat there, waiting for the other members to read the card. But when they started fighting for it, he got up and attempted to pry it from them. Eric snatched up the card while Minwoo was trying to read it.

 

“I just came back from the military yesterday and you’re making me do this?” Minwoo complained. “It’s not fair, I want to go home!”

 

“Why don’t we just read it together?” Hyesung suggested. The others ignored him.

 

“Don't fight! Let’s just read it together!” Junjin cried out at them.

 

“Ok, ok,” the other members said as they finally agreed to read the card together.

 

“Shinhwa’s little Venus,” Hyesung read, from behind Minwoo.

 

“Venus is gonna be our title song,” Minwoo reminded, as the members stared at each other.

 

“Are we doing Hello Baby?” Dongwan asked.

 

“No, this is Mnet,” Junjin said, “that can’t be.”

 

“We got married?”

 

“Nope, that’s MBC.”

 

The members stared at the card in silence for a few minutes.

 

“No, I’m not doing it!” Junjin suddenly burst out as he stormed to the back of the room.

 

The others looked at him, incredulous.

 

“What is it?” Dongwan asked.

 

“I think I have an idea – ” Andy said, before being interrupted by another loud beep sound.

 

“Shinhwa, please take your seats,” a loud voice creaked from the speakers.

 

Instantly, the noise died down and Shinhwa sat in a line facing the camera.

 

“Do you have any idea what show you are doing?” the voice asked.

 

“Do we take care of a child?” Minwoo asked. “I want a child.”

 

“You have to guess what the show is about, based on the title,” the voice continued. “The two who get right answers will get a special reward on the first day of filming.”

 

“Do we take care of a group of rebellious teenagers?” Junjin asked heatedly.

 

Everybody looked at him; Junjin had starred in a show back in 2008 where he had to take care of four rebellious high school girls. They had made his life hell and he was not sure whether he wanted to repeat the experience.

 

“Wait, it’s just one right?” Hyesung asked. “Since it’s written ‘little Venus’”.

 

“Is she foreign?” Andy chanced. “Since it’s ‘Venus’.”

 

“Wait, no, Venus does not have to be foreign, she can be Korean as well,” Dongwan said.

 

“Hyesung and Andy, one point each,” the voice announced.

 

“What? Wait! Don’t count that!” Minwoo exclaimed.

 

“She’s a teenager?” Junjin asked.

 

“Junjin, one point.”

 

“We’ll be her mentors?” Dongwan chanced.

 

“Dongwan, zero,” the voiced croaked.

 

Everyone burst out laughing as Dongwan smiled awkwardly.

 

“We’ll be her fathers!!!” Eric, Andy, Junjin and Dongwan shouted at the same time.

 

“Wait, is she going to live with us?” Minwoo burst out.

 

“I’m not doing it!” Junjin repeated.

 

“Today’s winners are Junjin and Andy. Let me explain the concept, you are going to going to take care of a foreign teenager for the next few months,” the voice said. “You will be assigned a rebellious teenager and you will have to attempt to change her behaviour and make her a better person. We have planned to start airing three weeks after comeback. Is that ok with you?”

 

Some of the members cheered while others grunted.

 

“It’s ok,” Hyesung patted Junijn on the back. “We’re all gonna do it together, because – ”

 

“Urineun –” Dongwan started.

 

“Shinhwa imnida!” the others chorused.

 

The six of them laughed, unaware of what was waiting for them ahead.
