Close My Eyes - Block B
Naeun opened her wide eyes again for the billionth time. The night sky engulfed all of EXO Planet, yet she didn’t feel tired at all.
Placing a light hand on her pillow, she sighed. *Why can’t I just fall asleep? Am I homesick?* She glanced all around Kai and Suho’s past room. The two had moved into the other room to give her some privacy for the night.
*No… That can’t be it.* Naeun puffed up her cheeks with air. *I wanted to escape home more than ever. At least now I don’t have to deal with school, bullies, or the feeling of loneliness.* She pulled the soft blanket up around her.
*Then what is it?*Her conscience seemed to ask her. Naeun let out a dissatisfied grumble. She honestly didn’t know what was wrong with her. *At times like this, my feather would calm me down…* She grew even more depressed after realizing that her angel’s feather was still back home.
She rolled on her side and glanced out the window. Instantly, her breath hitched in as she saw a tiny glimpse of the night stars. Heck, she could even see the Milky Way from here!
“Wow…” Entranced, she automatically pushed the blanket off of herself and pressed her nose up against the window. Thousands of bright, gleaming specks coated the inky sky like shimmery fairy dust.
She longed to see more of it. Looking at the sky out of a small window created restrictions. Barriers.
*A little peek wouldn’t hurt… would it?* Naeun thought with a small smile as she tiptoed out of her room. Baekhyun’s scent still lingered on her and slightly calmed her racing heart.
As she passed EXO-K’s room, she heard loud snores from behind the door. A small, shy smile graced her lips. *I guess they’re asleep.*
When Naeun passed the kitchen, she noticed a little square on the top of the ceiling. It was slightly creaked open. Someone had been here. A small ladder was propped up against it.
Curiosity got the better of her and she climbed up the ladder, heaving the square opening away. Plus, she wanted to see the sky. Maybe that would help her sleep.
Naeun poked her head out of the opening and shivered a little as the wind blew in her hair. She was almost all the way up onto the rooftop when her foot slipped.
“KYA!” She yelped and shut her eyes instinctively when a pair of arms grabbed her underarms. Naeun slowly opened her eyes when the realized that she wasn’t falling flat on her face.
She quietly stared at her saviour as he worriedly looked at her, “Be careful! I almost didn’t catch you in time.”
“S-Sehun…?” Naeun blurted, stunned.
Sehun, the wind angel, blinked with a smile, “Yeeees?”
“W-Why are you here?” She questioned as he pulled her up effortlessly from the opening and sat her down in the middle of the rooftop. She sat down and so did he.
“I could ask you the same question.” The maknae gave her a look.
Naeun blinked, “I… couldn’t sleep.”
Sehun paused, then broke out into a beam, “I couldn’t either! Weird, huh? It’s like our minds connected or something.”
She burst out in quiet chuckles at his unusual response. “You really think so?”
Sehun shrugged and gave her a nod.
“So,” He began, after some silence. “Did you come out here to enjoy the night sky?” He casually laid down with his hands behind his head.
She looked up at the sky and her jaw dropped. It looked much better on the rooftop. Planets of all sorts were more visible in the night. The moon cast a ghostly glow on her and made her delicate features stand out. Twinkling stars excitedly cast dim lights on the two of them.
“Yeah… I wanted to see the sky more clearly.” Naeun replied in wonder to Sehun’s previous question. The latter softened and grinned, turning his attention to the sky above him, “It’s beautiful, isn’t it?”
Naeun nodded slowly. She was still in awe when a light patting noise brought her back down to reality. She turned around to see Sehun patting the spot beside him. Naeun gave him a puzzled look.
“Lie down. You’ll regret it if you don’t.” He warned with a serious expression. Naeun slightly cowered away by his intimidating tone of voice when he burst out in snickers.
“Oh man!” He giggled. “You should’ve seen your face! Did I really seem that scary to you?”
She glared at him, “You’re the most peculiar maknae I’ve ever seen. A maknae that can be serious and be full of aegyo at the same time doesn’t exist.”
“Sure it does.” Sehun flashed a smile, “He’s right here.” He pointed to himself.
Naeun shook her head, “For someone that I’ve just met today, you’re pretty cocky.”
“Nah.” Sehun shook his head, “The cocky title goes to Jongin hyung.” Naeun tilted her head in confusion. *Jongin?* Sehun noticed her bewildered expression and spoke again, “Kai. Kai hyung.”
“Ohh.” She nodded in understanding. “I second on that one so far.” The both of them laughed.
Sehun beamed and patted the empty spot again, “Don’t worry. I don’t bite.” Naeun pondered that for a minute until she scooted over and cautiously laid down beside him, putting a far enough distance between the two.
Sehun was right. The wind seemed relaxing and the sky showed off its full potential. Right when you opened your eyes, stars, planets and constellations would greet you happily.
He smiled at Naeun, “It’s great, isn’t it?”
She nodded with a serene expression. “It is.”
“So,” Sehun turned to her after a while. She blinked at him, “Yes?”
“Aren’t you a bit nervous?”
Naeun furrowed her eyebrows, “About what?”
“About being here, silly.” He giggled. “Normally, humans would easily get terrified, scared, or worried about meeting a group of angels and getting cast into their world without a distinct way of getting back home.” He said sarcastically.
Naeun giggled, “That’s true… But I’m actually not homesick at all.”
Sehun seemed intrigued, “How so?”
“Even if I were to go back to Earth… I wouldn’t be happy. I’d be all alone.” She sighed. Sehun softened and quietly urged her to go on.
“You see, I live alone. I’ve been living alone for quite a while now.”
Sehun’s eyes widened, “No way! A young girl like you?”
Naeun paused and gave him a weird look, “Young? Aren’t you the younger one?”
Sehun shook his head, “I’ve been… dead for a while now.”
“Oh.” She paused. *Of course. He’s supposed to be dead because he’s angel. Argh, I’m so stupid for asking him that.* She mentally hit herself.
But Sehun didn’t seem irked or sad at all. Instead, he just smiled and told her to go on.
“I often get bullied too, so I wouldn’t wish to go back.” She shivered. “Well, at least not for a little while. You see, I wished to finally meet a certain someone… And then I just ended up here. I don’t know how, but I feel like I have a purpose to be here. Something’s just telling me that I need to stay, as odd as it sounds.” She chose her words carefully, not wanting to reveal so much information to an almost-stranger.
“…That doesn’t sound odd.” Sehun shrugged. “It’s a gut feeling, right? Gut feelings don’t lie.”
Naeun was taken aback by his reply, but then softly smiled.
“I won’t be nosy and ask you right now about who this person is,” He rolled over onto his stomach and gazed into your eyes, “But in the future, once we trust each other well enough, you’ll tell me, won’t you?” Sehun beamed.
“Mayyyybe.” She put her hands behind her head and laughed.
Sehun pouted, “Come on! I’m not a shady guy! I’m a cute maknae! I’m trustworthy, so you’ll have to tell me, okay? Promise?”
Naeun made a face, “I don’t know if I should make promises with strangers…”
“Oh, come on. You never know. The person you’re looking for could be me!” He grinned.
“I highly doubt that.” She laughed. *But it could be a possibility.*
“Promise? PROMISE?!” He wouldn’t hear it.
Naeun put a finger on his lips to silence him, “Shh!” She urged. When Sehun’s eyes pleaded jokingly with her, she let out a sigh.
“Fine, fine.” She gave up and intertwined her pinky with his, “Jeez. For an angel, you sure have a way with words.”
“Of course! I’m a maknae, and maknaes never lose!” He grinned.
Naeun smirked, “Whatever you say, Kai.”
“Hey!” Sehun laughed, “Don’t be such a wiseguy!”
Another giggle escaped Naeun’s lips, “Alright, Sehun.” She turned her attention back to the vast skies of EXO Planet as Sehun smiled beside her, growing eager to get to know her better.
That night, Naeun swore to find her angel, no matter what it took.
