Answer The Phone - F.Cuz
With a jolt, Naeun woke up. Her eyelids along with her long eyelashes opened up slowly. She stared blankly at the ceiling.
Heaving a sigh, she turned her head around and stared at her side table. Sadly smiling, she d the bright white feather that sat on top of it before picking it up carefully in her hands.
She stared at her reflection in the nearby mirror. *My angel…* She absentmindedly raised the feather up to her cheek, as if it would disappear at any given moment.
*I dreamt about you again… It’s the fourth time this week.* Naeun closed her eyes peacefully, dreading to go to school. *Could this be some sort of a sign?* She opened her eyes and seemed somewhat disappointed that she was still alone.
Naeun had forgotten his face, but remembered only bits and pieces of his flawless qualities. She tightly clung onto those and tried hard to remember him every day.
She timidly peeked at the digital clock beside her and grimaced. Naeun had woken up a bit earlier than she normally would on school days. Slowly, she put down the feather and pouted, “Psh… A sign? Yeah, right…” She grumbled.
But still, she felt that she was indebted to the boy that had saved her miraculously that day. When she went back to the hospital, doctors had been stunned by her sudden recovery. After bunches of tests, she was finally discharged.
“I don’t know how you did it.”The kind doctor shook his head in disbelief, “But your leukemia is completely gone.”
Naeun never told anyone about her saviour and promised to keep it a secret between only her and him. After being taken in by her strict grandfather who moved in with his nieces a year ago, Naeun started living by herself.
Gently, she put the feather onto her lips and set it back down in its rightful place.
“I am always thinking about you.” Naeun murmured. After a quick smile, she changed into her uniform and got ready for school.
Naeun quietly sat at her desk while the teacher rambled on and on about physics and whatnot. She was smart, sure, but she had absolutely no will to listen.
*That luscious brown hair… His blinding smile… The glowing halo and cashmere wings… Will I ever see him again? He was just so perf—*
Her thoughts were quickly cut off when she felt a slimy wet thing on her hair. Naeun slowly put her hand up to weave it out and stared at it.
*Ew!* It was a spitball. She furiously turned around to glare at the culprit. It was none other than Han Kangsoo, the class clown. Of course. He made fun of everyone all the time.
Kangsoo hi-fived his friend and smirked at Naeun, making her shake in anger. He made sure to catapult several more spitballs at her, making her slam her hands on the table and stand up. *That annoying bast—*
“Song Naeun-sshi, is something the matter?” An offended voice made her head snap up. The physics teacher was glaring at her as the other students stared. She was the center of attention.
Her anger quickly dissipated as she awkwardly sat back down, “…No. Sorry, it’s nothing.”
Kangsoo triumphantly grinned as he secretively continued to launch spitballs at Naeun. Not wanting to make a scene, she tried hard to ignore him and all his stupid antics, all the while thinking of her angel, who always helped her get through the day.
Luckily, the shrilly sound of the lunch bell saved her. Naeun instantly grabbed her bag, hastily shoved all her things into it, and made a beeline to the cafeteria when someone grabbed her backpack.
*Not again.* Naeun came face to face with Kangsoo, who looked amused. He thought she was fun to pick on, while she thought of him as an irritating annoyance. In short, she hated him.
Kangsoo chortled, “Feeling special?”
Naeun glared at him, “Excuse me?” *I don’t know how this guy can be the kingka of our school. He’s completely idiotic and a huge moron. But my angel on the other hand…*
“I’m paying attention to you.” He explained, winking at a couple girls nearby who giggled and whispered to each other excitedly. “Face it. I’m hot, funny, and have a killer smile. But finally, I’m making you, the girl who has no friends, my next victim. How does it feel?” He snickered as his equally stupid friends guffawed behind him.
She scoffed, hands on her hips, “You think you’re the king of the world, don’t you? Is that why you’re bugging the hell out of me?”
Kangsoo shrugged, “Yes, and yes. I wanna see what it feels like to date a girl with a poor past life.”
Naeun fought the urge to slap him as her hands curled up into fists, “Retarded jerk…” She hissed quietly.
But Kangsoo’s bat-like ears picked it up. His eyes glinted maliciously, “What did you say?!”
In one swift moment, she ran as fast as she could and bolted for it. When Han Kangsoo was mad, people stayed clear of him. And worse, he didn’t care about gender. He’d hit a girl if he had to.
*Stupid me! Why did I even let my big-mouth run off?!* Naeun mentally reprimanded herself as she locked herself in the janitor’s closet, making a sharp turn to the right.
She quickly put her ear to the door. To her relief, she heard the heavy footsteps of idiot Kangsoo and his bulky friends go in the other direction.
Naeun kept quiet and let her body go limp, sinking onto the floor of the closet. Her stomach grumbled, but she couldn’t do anything about it. She was scared of getting hurt by Kangsoo.
Naeun sat down on the dusty floor and put her arms around her bent legs, resting her head on them. Feeling a bit scared and nervous, she sighed.
*In the end, I came to school but I never gained any friends. Maybe there’s something wrong with me.* She thought glumly.
“Angel… I want to see you again.” Naeun sniffled. “I want to meet you… Just once…” Her eyes slowly closed as she wished hard.
