It had been two weeks since that outing. Khun hadn’t visit Yoona again. As for Taecyeon, he visited Yoorim 3 times a week, at the bakery, or over at the house. Yoorim grew really fond with Taecyeon; she talked about him everywhere.

It was a Sunday morning; Taeyeon and Yoona were cleaning their house.

“Yoona, I found something” yelled Taeyeon

“Unnie, what is it?” Yoona asked as she folded a pile of clothes

“Your pictures from the orphanage! A lot of them! They were in mom’s treasure box” Taeyeon ran out to the living room with the box

“Really? I thought I lost all of them. I never saw it in mom’s treasure box!”

“There is another drawer right here, she put it under there. We never really check this box so we didn’t know. In that drawer she put these pictures and this little necklace. I guess it was yours from the orphanage?”

“This necklace…it looks familiar…” Yoona said it looked familiar to her but she couldn’t remember.

Taeyeon and Yoona looked through the old pictures of Yoona from the orphanage; it was just like looking at Yoorim’s pictures.

“Wow, Yoorim resembles you so much!” Taeyeon said

“Because she’s my daughter!” Yoona smiled

“I recognized all of these kids! Hey, there’s Khun!” Taeyeon pointed to the group picture

“Me too, and I hope they also got adopted into a loving family like I did!”

“Wait, who’s this person?” Taeyeon pointed at a boy in one picture.

“This person?...”Yoona took one look at the picture. It was a picture of her and a little boy, around 8 years old. He had his arm around her shoulder and they both smiled brightly for the camera.

Yoona flipped the picture to the back and it wrote:

“Yoona and Ian. August, 1993”

“Ian?...this name is an English name…Ian…” Yoona tried to remember the boy.

“You guys seemed close in the picture…” said Taeyeon. “But I don’t think he was one of the orphans. The outfit he wore said that he was from a wealthy family”

“Ian…” Yoona tried to remember again

“He must’ve came to the orphanage often then, for you guys to be close like this in the picture!”

“Ian…oh my God! I think I remember him!!!” Yoona yelled.

Flashback to when Yoona was 7 at the orphanage

“Children! Today we got some guests visit us!” said one of the nannies

“We have guests!!” The children excited

“This is Mrs. @*$#” said the nanny

“Annyonghaseyo!” The children greeted the lady

“And this is her son, his name is Ian”

“Annyonghaseyo!” The children greeted the boy, Ian.

“They came here to visit us from America. Ian is not really good with Korean so Mrs. @*$ hope that you children can help him get better with his Korean. They will stay in Korea for the whole summer, so you all will have this new friend for the whole summer!” the nanny told the children.

“She is also building you all a new playground! What should we say?” the nanny asked the children.

“Thank you Mrs. @*$ !!” The children bowed.

All the children were excited to have a new friend for the summer, but little Yoona was sitting alone at the table, unsure of this new friend. Ian came up to her.

“Hi!” he said in English

“An..annyeong…” little Yoona responded in Korean

“Why are you here alone?” Ian asked in English

“I’m sorry but I don’t understand what you said” little Yoona said back in Korean

“Why…you...here…alone?” Ian tried hard to speak in Korean 

“Oh, you mean that?. Then you have to say ‘Why are you here alone?’!” Yoona corrected Ian.

“Why are you here alone?” Ian repeated, and he was happy to learn another phrase.

Mrs. @*$ saw everything and asked the nannies about Yoona. She was very satisfied with how her son learned from the little girl.

“I’ll have to take my son here often! In the US he’s not very outgoing. Seems like he’s getting around well in here” Mrs. @*$ smiled.

“So Ian was the boy from the US” said Taeyeon

“He and his mom came often. Every time they came they would bring us a lot of goodies. They’re good hearts people!” said Yoona.

“But I don’t know why I can’t recall the lady’s name…”

“And then what happened next? How did you guys got closer?” Taeyeon asked while Yoona tried to put all the pieces of her memory together.

“Yoona!!!” yelled Ian

“Hi Ian, you came early today!!” little Yoona said to Ian

“Yoona, I brought over a…a….” Ian tried to think what was the Korean vocabulary for the thing he held in his hands.

“Babo! It’s called a notebook!” little Yoona laughed

“Yes!! It’s a notebook! Now we can start writing!” Ian said

“Then I’ll teach you how to write!” Yoona smiled

They started their little lesson, while the jealous little Khun stood at the back and witnessed everything.

“Yoona!! play with me!!” Khun ran to Yoona

“We’re studying!” Ian said in English

“What! I dont get what you said, but I don’t like you! Whenever you came, Yoona always with you!” Khun said back to Ian

“I’m teaching him!” Yoona said to Khun

“Yoona, let’s go. I want to show you something!” Khun grabbed Yoona’s wrist

“Let go of her!” Ian said in English. “Don’t be rude!”

The nanny saw everything and she came to break them up.

“Khun, you’re not being nice. Please apology!” said the nanny

“But!!”

“Hurry Khun, apology!” the nanny said again

“I’m SORRY!!” Khun then ran outside with tears in his eyes.

“I’m sorry Ian dear, please continue your lesson with Yoona!” the nanny said to Ian

“Are you…hurt?” Ian asked little Yoona in Korean

“I’m fine. I don’t know why he’s like that today…”

“That time Khun’s reaction was just exactly like the time he was outside our house” said Yoona.

“I told you he likes you!” said Taeyeon

“Anyway, I taught Ian Korean for about 3 months. He caught up really fast and by the end of the 3 months, he could talk just like us. We got really close just after 3 months. I remember the last time he came to the orphanage, they threw a big party.” said Yoona

“Children, today will be the last day that Mrs. @*$ and Ian will come here, so they decided they will throw a party for all of you!” said one of the nannies

“Last day?” little Yoona looked at Ian, who was also looking at her.

“Let’s all taking some pictures!” said Mrs. @*$

“Mom, I want a picture with Yoona!” said Ian

“Okay, sweeties! Come together!” said Mrs. @*$

Ian pulled Yoona over, put his arm over her shoulder, and told her to say ‘cheese’, something that he taught her during the 3 months.

“CHEESE!” both children said

“Very cute!!”said Mrs. @*$

“You really have to go?” asked little Yoona. “I’ll miss you…”

“Me too…” said Ian. “Can I look for you here when I come back?”

“I don’t know…I might move in with my new family in 3 months…” said little Yoona.

Then it was time for Ian to leave. They gave each other one last hug and promised each other that they will remember each other if they ever meet again.

“Remember this notebook! I’ll show it to you when I meet you again!” said Ian as he walked out the car with his mom.

“I will!! Take care Ian!!” said little Yoona as she cried.

“So that was the last time you saw him?” asked Taeyeon

“No, I saw him one more time” Yoona lowered her voice.

It was a week after the day Ian and his mom visited the orphanage for the last time. Ian was at his house in Korea, preparing for the flight back to America the next day.

“Did you prepare what I asked?” Ian asked his caretaker

“Yes, Ian. I found a perfect necklace with the money you gave me from your piggy bank” said his caretaker

“Let me see!!” he said in excitement

His caretaker took out a necklace with a Y initial.

“You gave me $10, and this was all I can found” said his caretaker

“It’s perfect! Y for Yoona!” Ian excited.

Then he opened the table’s drawer, pulled out the picture they took together. He wrote at the back:

“Yoona and Ian. August, 1993”

“I’m going! Please tell mom that I’m going to the orphanage one last time!” Ian said as he ran out of his room, while holding the necklace and picture in hands

“Ian!! Wait!!” yelled his caretaker

Ian ran out to the car and asked the driver to drive him to the orphanage. He was all excited about seeing little Yoona again and to give her the gifts.

“Vincent, please faster!” said Ian

“Yes, little master!” said his driver

It was the first day of school for the children at the orphanage. When Ian reached the orphanage, he saw little Yoona was walking with Khun back to the orphanage from school.

“Yoona!!!” Ian yelled through the car window, but little Yoona didn’t hear since Ian was across the street.

“Yoona!!!” Ian yelled again, and little Yoona still didn’t hear him.

“I’ll have to go over, wait for me here” Ian said to Vincent

“Wait Ian, it’s green light! THE CARS!!!!” Vincent yelled

“YOONA!!!!!!!” Ian yelled as he tried to run over the street, by then little Yoona saw him.

“IAN!!!!” Yoona yelled back and also tried to cross the street.

Then suddenly, all everyone could hear was a loud sound, and much screaming from the people around… 

“Little master!! Master!!” yelled Ian’s driver as he ran over to Ian, who was lying on the street, with much blood.

“Yoona!!!” Khun yelled out, and ran over to Yoona, who was also lying on the street, next to Ian.

“Ian, Ian!! Are you okay? Ian!!” Vincent panicked.

“I’ll take you to the hospital!! Please be okay master!!”

Ian was unconscious…

“I…Ian…” little Yoona slowly opened her eyes and saw Vincent carried Ian’s body to the car. The little box of necklace and picture fell in front of her.

“…Ian…Ian!!!” she cried

“Yoona, are you okay? Nannies!! Yoona got hit by a car!!!” Khun yelled out for the nannies.

“The nannies came out and brought me in. I didn’t get badly injured because I remember he blocked the car for me…” Yoona sobbed.

“An 8 years old boy blocked a car for you?” Taeyeon asked in surprised. “So do you know where is he now?” she asked

“I don’t know…but I overheard the nannies while they were talking. They said his condition was seriously and he might not make it…”

“That day, was the last time I saw him…He might not be in this world anymore” Yoona cried as she looked at the picture and the necklace…
