Nobody really knows what happens to the best friend at the end of every story. But what happens when that “supporting character” actually has feelings for the male lead?

Foreword

『She walked up to me, tears in her eyes and bottom lip quivering. She let out an unsteady breath and clenched her fists. Fighting the tears back, she looked me up and down. I sort of had expected her to break right then and there. “You’re going to let this—of all things—get in between us? After everything?”

Her words were barely above a whisper and if I had not had my complete focus on her then I would have not understood. I did not reply for a good moment. The silence between us was full of tension built up by the recent events. I opened my mouth before any real words had formed. So I had just shut it and nodded my head slowly. Then the tears streamed down Jiyeon’s face and her mouth molded into a perfect frown.

“Why? Unnie, why? You know I love him…”

At this, I could feel the tears begin to line my eyes. I cleared my throat. “And so do I. That’s why this is a huge problem.”

Jiyeon was completely taken aback by my revelation. She put a hand over her mouth and shook her head, tears still falling. “Unnie… Eunyoung Unnie… Why now? Aren’t you being selfish?”

I sighed and stuffed my hands into the pockets of my coat. It was strange how calm we were. A chilly winter breeze had passed us and I fought the urge to shiver. “Jiyeon-ah, you and I both know that these past ten years I have been anything but selfish.”

She remained there, glued to the pavement while still sniffling. It was the loud and undeniable truth, both of us were well aware of that. That is why she did not reply, because she did not have anything to disprove it.

“I think… it’s time I do something on my own, and for myself,” I added while keeping my eyes trained on hers.

There. It was finally out. And there was no turning back.』
