“Her Chinese name is Li Yin."

The Significance of One

Ri In’s POV

Next day at school, Yeonhee promised that she would introduce her friends to me. I wonder who her friends are…? Nerds, , s or are just nice people. I really didn’t want to go. I don’t want myself socialising with other people. I am already a maid working for the Kim’s but I reluctantly followed Yeonhee. I know I wanted to have friends but now I have Yeonhee as a friend so I don’t need anyone else as a friend. Well not until break that is. So I had to be in class. But I didn’t mind. You could say I was a nerd. I love school! My favourite subject would be maths. Wait! No, not maths but sport. I am really competitive. I ‘m girly but then am into sport. I am weird aren’t I? But believe me; these kinds of people do exist. I turned my attention back to the work in front of me.

“Bring!” the bell rang for break. I got my stuff and walked up.

“Come on! Let’s go!” Yeonhee rushed. So we both got out of the room and went to the cafeteria.

We arrived at the cafeteria. I saw Yeonhee waving to a table with some guys on it. They waved back. Now I know it’s them, the Kingkas’. Why does she have to be friends with them? Urghhh! I don’t want to socialise with people, especially Kingkas’! Oh well, here goes nothing….

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Junsu’s POV

Yoochun said that his girlfriend is bringing her friend over for lunch. I really didn’t want to meet her. She might be another one of those s, always crowding over them. He shook his head at that thought. Just then, I saw someone sit at our table. It must be Yeonhee with her friend. I looked up in saw her, the maid in my house. Why was she so lucky that she was Yeonhee’s friend, leading her to know us? I saw her squirm uncomfortably. She then stood up.

“Annyonghaseyo. I am Jang Ri In. I come from China. Nice to meet you all,” she said. She looked up and saw Jae Joong and her eyes widened immediately. I wonder why…

“Jae Joongie Oppa!” she exclaimed. She made the whole cafeteria turn towards her.

“Li Yinnie!” cried Jae Joong. They both walked up and to each other and held the arms and started jumping frantically. Somehow this scene pained me. Like a million pins pinning me nonstop. Am I jealous? No! I can’t be! She is just a servant in my house. Who cares!?

“Ahem, ahem,” Yoochun coughed. They both turned their heads towards Yoochun.

“Huh? Oh, sorry,” said Li Yin and returned back to her seat.

“You guys know each other?” asked Changmin. She looked at Changmin for a long time until he remembered, he forgot to introduce himself.

“Oh, sorry. My name is Changmin. So…do you guys know each other?” asked Changmin again.

“Ah yes. We knew each other when we went to school. So we are primary school friends,” explained Ri In.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Narrator POV

“Oh,” they all said at the same time (Yunho, Changmin, Yoochun and Junsu).

“Why do you call her Li Yinnie?” asked Yunho.

“Her Chinese name is Li Yin,” replied Jae Joong.

“Oh,” they all said at the same time, again.

“Unnie! Tell us about you self!” said Changmin.

They all looked at Ri In.

“Um, I favourite subject is maths. You would normally see me in the library or outside kicking some goals,” said Ri In.

“Kicking some goals?” asked Junsu.

“Yeah, I play soccer,” said Ri In.

“You do! Cool! I play too!” Junsu exclaimed.

He didn’t know that a maid in his house would like to play soccer.

They talked and talked until the bell rang. They all went their individual ways back to their home room.

The bell rang for end of school and Ri In bolted out of the class and disappeared down the corridor.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Junsu’s POV

I was going to get Ri In and walk her home but she bolted out of the class so fast. Oh, yeah. I remember, Omma told her to come home early and ask her some questions. I wonder what kind of questions there are.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

At the Kim’s…

“Mrs. Kim, how may I help you?” asked Ri In.

“Just some simple questions. Now, can you tell me, did you really come from China?” Mrs. Kim asked.

“Yes. How did you know?” asked Ri In. She was getting scared.

Will she kick me out of this house? Thought Ri In.

“Well I heard you say some Chinese to the maids. I was curious, that’s all. Now can you tell me, is your Omma’s name Jang Rac Xu and your father’s name is Jang Si Yon?” asked Mrs. Kim.

“Yes,” Ri In admitted.

“Good. You can go now,” said Mrs. Kim. Then Ri In left without another word.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Junsu’s POV

I came home. When I was in my room I just sat down on bed starring out of the ceiling. There’s not much I can do now. I looked to my left and saw my soccer ball and smiled. I ran downstairs with my soccer ball and saw Omma sitting on the couch and reading something.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mrs. Kim’s POV

“Omma! Can I take our new maid outside so we can play soccer?” Junsu asked.

I looked out and saw Junsu. He was there holding on to a soccer ball.

“Which maid?” I asked.

I saw him scratch the back of his head and replied.

“Jang Ri In,” Junsu answered.

“Oh, her,” I said. This might not be a bad opportunity to let them know each other more since they are getting married soon.

“OK,” I said.

“Yay! Thanks Omma!” Junsu said and ran outside the room.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ri In’s POV

I was dusting some dust off a vase when I felt someone grabbed my hand. I turned around. It was Junsu.

“Y-young Master Junsu,” I greeted.

“Come with me,” said Junsu. I pushed myself back.

“Wh-where?” I asked.

“Play soccer,” he simply replied.

“But-but I still have things to do,” I said. I really didn’t want to lose this job.

“I already asked my Omma. She said we can go!” he said, obviously very impatient.

“But let me change!” I said and ran upstairs to change.
