“L-let me g-go."

The Significance of One

Ri In’s POV

I sighed as I looked at the papers on my table. All my efforts are wasted. The papers were the pieces of paper Yeonhee gave me. Thinking about Yeonhee, I haven’t talked to her in a long time. We should hang out. I picked up my phone and scrolled through the list on contacts. I came to Yeonhee’s name and pressed the call button.

“Yobosaeyo?”

“It’s me, Ri In,” I said.

“Oh, Ri In, what’s up?” Yeonhee asked me.

“Oh, nothing special at all. Can we go have a coffee?” I asked her.

“Of course but aren’t you supposed to work?” she asked me.

“No, actually, I quit,” I answered.

“Bwoh!? Why Ri In?!” she demanded. I pulled the phone away from my ear.

“Long story,” I cut short.

“I have time,” she retorted.

“I will tell you when we get there,” I said.

“OK, meet up fifteen minutes later,” she said.

“Sure, at the local café near my house?” I confirmed.

“Of course, see you,” she said.

“See you there,” I bided and turned off the phone. I got my stuff and got my keys. I went in the car and started driving.

Yeonhee’s POV

I waited patiently for Ri In to come. I had arrived there earlier than her since I was already there. I played with my coffee until I heard the door open. I whipped my head and saw a Ri In, searching around for someone. I waved my hand around.

“Ri In!” I called to her. She turned her head my way and smiled. She looked as dazzling as always. I wonder if Junsu had been treating her good. She walked over to me.

“Hey, Yeonhee, long time no talk,” she greeted me as she sat down at the seat adjacent me.

“How are you?” I asked her. She looked a bit pale and her eyes were a bit red.

“I am fine. How are you?” she asked me back.

“I am good too. Now, what brings us here?” I asked her.

“I just wanted to talk to you. Why do you make me sound so mean?” she asked and pouted. I resisted the urge to chuckle and kept my face straight.

“Spill,” I said.

“Spill what?” she asked her eyes full of innocence.

“Why did you quit your job?” I asked.

“Because…the work was too hard,” she lied. I knew she lied. Every time she lies, she would sometimes keep a straight face and her eyes would be full of innocent or struggle with words.

“Ri In, I know you’re lying. Tell me the truth,” I told her. She sighed deeply.

“Because I don’t want to go against Junsu,” she explained.

“Why did he tell you to quit?” I demanded, feeling enraged. What is up with this guy?

“Because he h-hates me…” she whispered. It all hit me at once. It was a one sided love. One side loves the other unconditionally and the other side hates the other to its soul. We were all silent after that. I started to divert the subject to something else. I quickly racked my brain for something.

“How about Hang Kyung? Your childhood friend that is closer to you then me or Jae Joong? How is he?” I asked. I knew that Hang Kyung loved Ri In. If I can have him by her side, he will protect her unconditionally, just like Ri In with Junsu.

“Truthfully, I haven’t talked to him since Junsu and my wedding,” she confessed. So she hasn’t talked to him about her quitting the job?

“Oh, I see,” I said and nodded my head up and down slowly, in understanding.

“How about we hang out?” I asked Ri In. She looked down and I wanted to cheer her up. She was like a little dongsaeng to me.

“OK,” she agreed softly. I dragged her out of the cafe, after paying the café, of course. The whole day, we went shopping and buying stuff. Ri In seemed a little cheered by then. We were walking out of the clothes shop when we bumped into someone.

“Mianhe,” we apologised together.

“That’s alright. So what are you girls doing here, shopping?” the voice said. I looked up and saw Hang Kyung.

“Han Geng!” Ri In acknowledged before me.

“Are you going to answer me or not?” I asked. We laughed at his persistence.

“What? Did I do something wrong?” he asked. We ended up laughing more. He was so cute! I took my cue to leave those two alone and hopefully, he can cheer Ri In up.

“Ri In, I have something to do. You hang around with Hang Kyung, araso?” I excused.

“OK,” she agreed and I left them two alone.

Hang Kyung’s POV

It was a surprise to see Ri In here. Wasn’t she supposed to be working?

“Li Yin-ah, why are you here? Aren’t you supposed to be working?” I asked her softly.

“About that…” she said and smiled sheepishly like a kid who did something wrong.

“I quitted,” she confessed.

“Why?” I asked surprised.

“Because he hates me…” she whispered. What!? That son of a made her do this? Unbelievable. Junsu, you will pay. Pay for all the damage you have done to Ri In. I will no longer let Ri In stay with you. Out of your range, your hostile feelings. I will make her forget you.

“Li Yin, how about we go for more shopping?” I asked, trying to divert the topic.

“Sure,” she replied and I beamed.

“Let’s go,” I said, holding her hand though she was struggling against it a bit. I secured my hand over hers and eventually, she stopped. So, we had the whole day of cheeriness and laughter.

Ri In’s POV

I felt warm next to Han Geng. He joked to me, making me feel light and cheery. I love Han Geng, as in a brother. He would be a perfect brother, in my terms. He is always so loving and caring. I felt happy whenever I am with him. It was late so I wanted to go home.

“It’s late, Oppa. I want to go home,” I told him.

“Do you want me to drive you home?” he asked me. I thought about it.

“OK, if you wish,” I said and he chuckled. So I ended up in his car, with him trying to bring up a conversation.

“Li Yin-ah, how have you been?” he asked me.

“You have asked this question over a million times already,” I reminded him.

“Oh, I must have forgotten,” he said. The trip was short. He arrived at house. I saw Junsu’s car in the drive way. He must be home early. The sun hadn’t actually gone down yet but he was already home. Why did I ask him to go home early and he doesn’t? What does he think of me? What even happened that night? He said I did something…and I should know of it.

*knock*knock*

I jumped at the sound on my window. I looked out at the slightly tinted glass and saw Han Geng.

“C’mon!” he whined. I laughed at his expression and walked out of the car.

“Thanks for driving me home, Han Geng Oppa,” I thanked him.

“That’s OK,” he said.

“I better go in right now,” I said.

“Okay,” he said. He suddenly pulled me into a tight hug. I was nearly suffocated.

“L-let me g-go,” I managed to say. He slowly released me out of the hug.

“Phew. You sure are strong,” I told him while I was trying to breathe.

“I will take that as a comment,” he said. I laughed at his silliness. We both laughed together for a while.

“I am going in now. See you some other time!” I said.

“Alright, I will see you very soon,” he said. He walked to his car. Before he went in, he turned around to wave at me. I smiled at bit and waved back, unenthusiastically. I turned around and walked to the door. I opened it and walked into the house.

“Where have you been?” someone asked me right after I closed the front door.

“N-nowhere, I was just h-hanging out with a f-friend, Junsu-shii,” I stuttered.

“Hang Kyung is your friend, right?” he asked coldly.

“Yes,” I replied, “What’s wrong with that?” I asked him back, trying to hide my fear.

“What’s wrong with that? You are the wife of Kim Junsu by name. At least don’t show yourself as a to everyone. I don’t want that because of you, our company’s reputation will go down,” he said coldly. I felt so pained. Why must he think of me like this?

“Fine,” I replied rudely and passed him to go upstairs. I could sense he was burning up. I tried to quicken up my pace and go to my room.
