Test Him

Upon receiving the message, Sungyeol raised his eyebrows and peered down at the maknae who was pretending not to know anything. His fingers moved swiftly over the keyboard as he replied.

'Sure, where? -Sungyeol'

'Meet you at the café outside!'

'Huh? Which one?'

'._. There’s only one. White Paradise'

'Okay, I’ll leave ten minutes after you.'

'Arasso.'

Immediately after the last text had been sent, Sungjong stood up and walked out of the room but not before shooting Sungyeol a don't-forget look.

The latter glanced out of the window again as he heard birds chirping merrily.

It’s a happy day … my mood should be happy too.

He stoned for about ten minutes and quickly left the room, tucking both his hands in his pockets.

Woohyun was sitting cross-legged in the living room with his eyes glued to the television while chewing on a banana. Sungyeol squinted at the screen to look at what he was watching.

"… APink MVs?"

"Hey, they’re cute okay," Woohyun defended with his mouth full of banana. The younger male rolled his eyes and headed for the door.

"Yah! Where are you going?"

"Hyung, I’m going to get coffee."

"Fine," Namstar waved his hand as if he was giving sacred permission, "Just don’t come back wielding a knife or something."

"Haha. Very funny. Very funny indeed." With absolutely no humour in his voice, Sungyeol twisted the doorknob and walked out into the cold.

"Don't get lost!" Woohyun called out after him.

Sungjong walked past busy roads and squealing children as he kept a lookout for White Paradise Café.  A sweet smile caressing his cheeks, he blew out a puff of white air and wrapped his arms around his coat in an attempt to preserve as much body heat as he could.

There it is! Spotting it, he quickened his footsteps and walked past the entrance doors into the café.

The tinkling of bells was heard as he inhaled the fragrant aroma of spices and coffee. This was practically heaven on earth.

Myungsoo and I should come here together sometime.

"Why didn't I know about this place earlier …" the diva maknae half-murmured to himself as he took a seat in the corner of the room.

A waiter ran up to him. Smiling, Sungjong ordered a cup of mocha and Americano. Sungyeol stepped in right at that moment and met his eyes. The younger boy quickly waved his hyung over and gestured for him to take a seat.

"I ordered you the usual," Sungjong babbled happily as the other male stared suspiciously at him.

"The usual?"

"Geez, hyung. It's not like your widespread love for Americano is unknown or something."

"Oh." Sungyeol laughed a little and smiled back.

Their coffee arrived. Sungyeol wrapped his palms around his cup of Americano, feeling slightly warmer as he watched Sungjong take a sip of his mocha.

"So …" Sungjong said cautiously.

This is it. "Yeah?" The Choding replied. "What did you want to talk to me about?"

"Did Myungsoo-hyung really confess to you?" The boy played nervously with the tips of his fingernails as he looked away. It was obvious that he was preparing himself for the worst.

Sungyeol didn't want to hurt Sungjong any further, but he knew he had to tell the truth. 

"He did."

The younger male's lip wobbled as his eyes filled up with tears. He'd been expecting this reply but it hurt all the same.

"Jong, listen to me," Sungyeol said and reached out for his hand. "I - I overheard Myungsoo telling Hoya-hyung that he was confused about his feelings. You still have a chance -"

What the heck are you doing Lee Sungyeol? You do know that you’re comforting your love rival don’t you? His inner conscience chided at him.

He's my bandmate. 

I care for him.

Psh, whatever, was the scoff he was rewarded with.

"Don't lie to me, hyung," Sungjong said, his voice faltering. "I knew he wouldn't want to stick around with someone like me for long. I'm just a loser t-that no one cares about."

There was a silence. Lowering his head to stare at the cup of now-cold coffee in his hands, the latter had no idea what to say.

That's not true ...

Sungjong sighed with fatigue laced in his voice.

"I guess that's it, then."

"No."

"H-Huh?" He blinked; unsure of how to react.

"Since neither of us want to give Myungsoo up without a fight, let's make him decide by himself."

Sungjong tried to comprehend. "Test him ... ? How ... ?"

"Yeah, test him." Sungyeol was now pressing his palms against his dongsaeng’s, looking straight at him. "Here's what we do."
