Chocolate Memory

For as long as she could remember, Kang Minhye has always had a strong dislike for Kim Himchan. It was only because he was the best friend of her oppa, Chansik; the two would bully and play pranks on Minhye whenever they were together. She was always outnumbered and disliked it. Also, it was because she couldn’t forget the memory where Himchan insulted her about her cooking.

Although they were kids, his words still hurt. It was when they were six and sever years old, and they were playing house and she had made him chocolate. Of course the chocolate was made out of mud, because she wasn’t at the age to know how to actually do something like that, and he actually ate them, instead of pretending to eat them, and told her they tasted disgusting and dirty. Minhye cried and swear to hate Himchan forever, and then she shoved the rest of the mud chocolate in his face and ran away.

Although Himchan was made to apologize to Minhye that same day by his umma, she still didn’t forget it, and only accepted his apology because of her own umma telling her so. Minhye still swear to hate Himchan forever, her hate eventually started to turn the other way around and she began crushing on him instead of hating him as she grew older. She started to see Himchan in a new light, and she suppressed her growing crush for Himchan every time he was around, mentioned, or when her thoughts wandered off on their own. No longer able to suppress her feelings, she finally admitted to herself that she liked her oppa’s best friend, Kim Himchan, and whether he liked her back or not; she was going to let him know. She was no longer that little girl anymore.

Minhye decided to meet up with Himchan at the park’s playground, since it was halfway for the both of them, and he agreed to meet her there. Also, it was only because of the little kids who would be around. She felt that she would feel much safer knowing that she wouldn’t be as embarrassed with the young ones around to witness, and she could offer them her present, if Himchan didn’t want it, that is if he didn’t want it. While waiting for him, Minhye wander around the playground before deciding to sit on one of the swing set.

Just as she sat down and was about to swing herself up, Himchan arrived at the playground. He spotted her after a few turning his head from left to right, and made his way towards Minhye. Quickly getting up, and smoothing out her clothes to appear presentable, Minhye greeted him shyly as Himchan greeted her back and asked her what she needed to tell him, casually standing there and putting his hands into his front pockets.

While slowly telling him that she needed him to know about something, Minhye fumbled with the clasp of her bag to retrieve the item she wanted to present to him, as she finally expressed that she liked him, like as in like, having feelings for him kind of ordeal. Since today was Valentine’s Day, she finally got her gift for him out of her bag; she held out a box of yummy chocolate and told him that she had made these especially for him, and waited for his reply.

This was totally a first for the both of them, since Himchan has never received anything from Minhye, and Minhye has never given anything to him, or ever made something for him again. She thought she might as well make him better chocolate since she learned how to actually make them now and she wanted Himchan to know that her chocolate have improved since then, and tasted a whole lot better.

Himchan was surprised by this action of Minhye after all those years of knowing her, since she never seemed to be friendly towards him after that one incident when they were little. Himchan then responded by taking the box of chocolate, and thanked Minhye with a smile, a friendly smile, feeling really touched. Minhye returned her own friendly smile right back at him and then urge him to taste the chocolate. He took a seat on one of the swing and Minhye joined him.

Himchan then jokingly said he hoped that the chocolate weren’t made out of water and dirt as the base ingredients and laughed sticking a piece of chocolate clump into his mouth. Minhye didn’t enjoy his comment and slapped his arm and told him that she spent a lot of time making them. Himchan apologize, taking back his earlier spoken words and had replaced them with the words that they taste very delicious instead.

The two spent their time swinging and eating the chocolate, finally resolving the issue from back then and becoming more friendly then they had been throughout their early years. Suddenly one of the little boys and his friends stole the chocolate box from Himchan, finding a way to distract him before taking it, and running off with it to eat it themselves, while laughing at their success.

Himchan chased after them, very much annoyed, but once he reached them and retrieved the box back, it was empty; they had finished the rest of the chocolate. He started scolding the little boys and nagging at them, but Minhye stopped him from his rant, and told him there were more at her house, if he wanted to eat more of them, that is. The two then set off towards Minhye’s house, walking side by side as the space between them dwindle step by step until they were walking shoulder to shoulder.
