You followed your school routine of eating lunch with Jiyeon then joining Zico afterwards. On this particular day you were out at the bleachers with Block B. Zico and his friends were laughing while you were staring off into space. You didn’t join in on their conversation but just twirled the butterfly pendant between your fingers. A figure on the roof caught your attention. You shifted your gaze upwards and your expression softened immediately.

*Daehyun oppa.*

He was gazing out at the scenery below him. His eyes met with yours and both of you froze.

*I wonder what he’s thinking.* You thought.

“Aish. I’m bored. Let’s play ball.” U-Kwon tossed his blazer on the bleacher and picked up a stranded basketball. “We’re uneven though.” P.O. got up. “Yeojin can play. She’ll be on my team. Right, baby?” Zico grinned as he put his arm around your neck.

Daehyun disappeared from sight. You lightly ducked out from under his arm, “Mianhae. I have to go check something.” You ran off.

“Yo, where’s your girl going?” Kyung nodded at you. He scratched his head, not knowing himself.

*What was Daehyun oppa doing on the roof?* Heart hammering in your ribcage, you raced up the stairs.

*Damn. It hurts every time I see her with him.* Daehyun sighed as he leaned against the wall. The door of the rooftop burst open and he straightened up right away. His heart filled with hope *Yeojin?!* But it was Jiyeon. His heart deflated at once like a cut-up balloon.

“I thought I would find you here.” Jiyeon walked over to him.

Daehyun grimaced. She had been following him around too much lately. *I just wish she would leave me alone.*

“Why are you all alone? Aren’t you lonely?” Jiyeon asked with a bright smile. Daehyun scowled as he headed towards the exit. “You’re still sulking over Yeojin and Zico, right?” Jiyeon asked. He froze with wide eyes. *She has the audacity to say that to me?!* Daehyun whirled around and glared at her.

Jiyeon pretended not to notice and casually stretched her slender arms. “It’s been two months since they’ve been together. Don’t you think you should be over it by now?”

*What the hell is she talking about?* Daehyun wondered.

Jiyeon looked at him with a knowing smile, “Yes, I know Jung Daehyun. You’re in love with Yeojin, aren’t you?” His eyes widened. *Shit! Fuck! How did she know?!* “Hmmm…but too bad she doesn’t feel the same way about you.” Jiyeon pouted. Daehyun gazed at her *What does she mean?*

You finally arrived at the final flight of stairs. *Whew. Made it. I hope Daehyun oppa is stil here.* You slightly opened the door to hear another voice than Daehyun’s. Your eyes enlarged in recognition *Is that Jiyeon?* You peeked between the space. Jiyeon and Daehyun seemed to be in a serious conversation.

“Yeojin is in love with Zico.” Jiyeon proclaimed. Your eyes widened *What?! No I’m not! I just like him!*

“She told me herself. She fell in love with him. She said they’re perfect for each other and that there is no other guy for her than him.” Yeojin continued. Your mouth fell open *I never said any of that to her! Why is she sprouting lies to Daehyun oppa?!*

Daehyun flinched at her words. They felt like knives cutting into his already broken heart. His hands balled into tight fists and started to shake. “And whoever is going to take that happiness from her will not only make her unhappy, but he’ll kill her.” Jiyeon emphasized the word. Daehyun’s face fell and his heart crashed into pieces. *Was she talking about me when she said that?* You were beyond bewildered. *I don’t understand why Jiyeon is telling him all these lies.*

Before you could meddle in, the bell rang. *I’ll ask her later.* You left. Jiyeon looked at Daehyun, “So you see, you should give up before you hurt her. I’m only telling you this because I don’t want to see both of you get hurt. Yeojin is my best friend. And you’re an oppa I really care about…” She squeezed his arm as he dismally looked away. “Remember. I’m always here if you need to talk.” Jiyeon left the rooftop with a satisfied smile. *Mission accomplished.*

Daehyun yanked his mask down. He needed to breathe. *What happened, Yeojin? You told me you didn’t feel for Zico in that way. Since when did those platonic feelings turn into love?* Betrayal and bitterness stabbed his heart.

When Jiyeon skipped into the classroom, you didn’t even greet her. She sat down with a big smile, “Hey! How was your time with Zico?” “Good.” You whispered. Jiyeon was ignorant of your changed tone and just jubilantly opened up her notebook. “Candy?” She held out a packet of Skittles. You shook your head. She just shrugged and popped one in her mouth. You searched her pretty, innocent face *I still don’t understand. What was your purpose of telling Daehyun oppa the lies of my feelings for Zico?*

School ended for the day. You slowly packed up, glancing at Jiyeon once in a while. Finally she put her backpack on and waved, “See ya tomorrow~” “Wait, Jiyeon-ah!” You blurted. She turned around and blinked in curiosity, “Wae?” You bit your lip, “Can we, um, talk?” “Talk?” Jiyeon tilted her head. You nodded. “Sure. What is it?” She asked. “Um, let’s go somewhere more private.” You led her to the empty staircase. “What is it?” Jiyeon asked, slightly impatient.

You hesitated. You didn’t know how to bring this up without sounding accusatory. “Yeojin?” She called. You looked at her. “What did you want to tell me?” Jiyeon asked.

You took a deep breath, “The thing is…I saw you today.” She gave you a puzzled look. “You were on the rooftop with Daehyun oppa.” At that, she stiffened. You continued, “And I heard what you said to him. You told him that I’m in love with Zico. I never told you that.” “Well isn’t it true? What? You don’t love him?” Jiyeon stared at you. The question back-fired on you and you reddened, “I do. I just…not in that way…yet. The point is, why would you tell Daehyun oppa something like that?”

“Why? I can’t?” Jiyeon challenged. You frowned. “It’s not that you can’t, it’s that it isn’t the truth. You said that I told you that I was in love with Zico and that he was the perfect match for me. I don’t remember telling you all those things.” Jiyeon looked away. “What was your motive for telling him those lies?” You questioned. She shrugged, “I just wanted to comfort him. He seemed worried about you.” “But that doesn’t mean you had to lie.” You said.

“I just wanted to placate him that his little sister was already dating someone.” Jiyeon stated.

You instinctively winced at the words ‘little sister’. “Just…don’t do that next time, okay? Daehyun oppa might misunderstand.” You said.

“Fine.” Jiyeon sourly said. “Thanks. I’ll see you.” You sighed in relief and turned to go.

Suddenly Jiyeon said, “You’re selfish, aren’t you?” You stopped with widened eyes. *Did I hear that right? Did she just call me…selfish?* Uncertainly you looked at her, “Excuse me?” Jiyeon pushed herself off the wall. Her expression wasn’t innocent or sweet anymore but full of annoyance and contempt. “You want both boys. Zico and Daehyun. Don’t you think that’s a bit egotistical of you?”

You stared at her in disbelief. *Is this the same shy Jiyeon I knew?* “No, I don’t want both of them. Zico is already my boyfriend and Daehyun oppa is….is…” You searched her face and your eyebrows pinched together in suspicion. *Why is she suddenly becoming so critical and defensive? Zico and Daehyun oppa aren’t any of her concern.* You had a flashback of Jiyeon and Daehyun together at the party. All the puzzle pieces clicked into place now. You knew why she lied to Daehyun now.

“You…no, it’s not possible…”

“What? Say it, Yeojin.” Jiyeon dared.

“You like Daehyun oppa, don’t you?” You blurted. She didn’t reply.

You blabbered on, “That’s why you’ve been hanging around him. That’s why you lied too him about my feelings, too!” Jiyeon smirked, “Oh, the history goes much deeper than that.” “Muh?” You couldn’t believe this was Han Jiyeon, your best friend.

“Do you know when I was determined to become your friend?”

You swallowed hard. You didn’t even want to guess.

“It was right after Daehyun oppa appeared. It was then that I thought ‘hey! It would be my advantage to befriend this naïve loner!’” Jiyeon smirked. You felt like someone had punched you in the stomach. “Y-you were using me? To get to Daehyun oppa?!” “Why else would anyone want to become your friend?” Jiyeon laughed. The bitter taste of copper filled your mouth and you stood there, hurt. “I-I can’t believe you. You were using me all along?!”

Her expression turned cold, “Yes, I was. And you deserved it. How could you be so dense and trust anyone? I was taking Daehyun oppa right out from under your nose and you didn’t even notice. Stupid, really.”

You grew mad and pushed her, “How can you do this to me?!”

“Don’t you push me for your own blindness!” Jiyeon shoved you harder. You grew furious and pushed her right back. Jiyeon stumbled into the wall. She was about to slam you back when she saw someone from the corner of her eye. Jiyeon purposely slammed herself into the wall and slipped onto the ground. Your eyes grew wide at the clumsy fall *Why did she hit herself-* You looked at the door and your eyes widened, “O-oppa.”

Daehyun stared at you and Jiyeon on the floor. “Oww…” She was pretending to lose her consciousness.

Daehyun ran over and stooped down next to her. He caught her upper body and examined her face. You gaped at Jiyeon *I didn’t push her. She shoved herself!* Now you knew what her intention was. She wanted to make you look bad in front of Daehyun. “Y-yah, Han Jiyeon. Get up. I didn’t cause you to fall onto the ground!” You pointed at her with a shaking finger, “O-oppa, don’t believe her. She tripped herself! I didn’t push her! Well, I did but not that hard!” Jiyeon moaned and touched her head, “My head…”

*This is a nightmare! I didn’t do anything!* You panicked. Daehyun looked at you and you froze. For the first time his eyes were unreadable. Before you could explain, he lifted Jiyeon up and carried her out. Jiyeon opened one eye and smirked *That’s what happens when you cross Han Jiyeon. Daehyun oppa will see you differently now oh-so-naïve Song Yeojin.*

You stood there, stunned. *Daehyun oppa didn’t believe her, right? I mean, he can’t be on her side! He was always on mine! She was lying to all of us!* Tears spilled down your cheeks. You realized you had made one of the biggest mistakes of your life.

Your phone rang. The others must have been waiting for you but you ignored the calls and ran away.
