Chapter 6 - A Name to Uphold
The Lover's Signature
"We'll have the house salad, croissants, eggs florentine, and 2 coffees. Actually make that, 1 coffee and 1 espresso."
"Whoa. I don't think I've ever seen you order this much." Wendy said in mild shock.
"Let's just say I experienced true hunger last night." Irene awkwardly laughed.
"You didn't have any food?"
Irene paused and wondered if she should tell Wendy that she rejected food from her roommate. She decided it was better to keep shut than get a mouthful from Wendy.
"No food."
"Well, why don't we go grocery shopping for you after brunch?" Wendy suggested.
"Sure, might as well or else I'll starve again." Irene chuckled.
"Oooh! I can come over and see your new place!" Wendy said excitedly.
"Oh god. It's not even worth seeing, Wendy."
"Well, what if I just want to sneak a peek at your roommate?" Wendy said with a wink.
"Gross!" Irene laughed slapping Wendy's arm. "Trust me, I'm doing you a favor."
"How is she though? I see that she didn't murder you." Wendy said with a smirk.
"Must you take everything I say seriously? And she's....fine or whatever. I don't hate her, if that's what you're trying to get at."
"Did you guys like...talk?"
"Sort of...she...apologized sort of." Irene said scratching her head with a finger.
"About the insult?"
"Yeah. Well...except....she said that... I cut her off before she could finish her sentence....so it's technically my fault." Irene said mumbling the last part of her sentence.
Wendy stared at her best friend for a moment in disbelief before bursting out laughing uncontrollably. Irene frantically looked around and saw that people were now glancing at them. She slapped Wendy's arm.
"Ow ow! Okay! I'll stop!" Wendy said barely calming herself down.
"Jeez Rene. You are a wreck! Here you were, acting like someone had stabbed your pride and you did it to yourself." Wendy cackled.
"Shut up." Irene grumbled.
She was grateful that the food finally came because that was enough to distract Wendy from her stupidity and start chowing down.
Irene usually didn't eat much, but she was famished. Even after her roommate told her she could eat her ramen, she was too prideful to mooch off a person that was more of a stranger than a roommate.
She didn't even know the girl's name. She knew that she had written it during the book signing, but there was so many names she had written that day, she couldn't remember the roommate's. Irene made a mental note to ask the next time she would see her.
Within 20 minutes, the both of them had cleared out their meal and were sipping on their caffeinated drinks.
"So, how's your job at the pre-school?" Irene asked.
"The kids are just so cute! Except when they cry, but they're all sweet children."
"How's the pay?"
"It's alright. Nothing crazy." Wendy laughed.
"Any hot, single preschool dads?" Irene teased.
"Holy . What's up with you?" Wendy laughed. "Come on, let's go get your groceries before you ask any more weird questions." Wendy said while handing her card to the waiter.
"Wendy, come on! I said it was my treat today!"
"Oh please! You always insist on paying. I think you can afford to let me have this one."
Irene giggled.
"Plus, it's a bribe to let me see your roommate"
----
Irene and Wendy had arrived at Irene's apartment.
"This is good enough. You can head on home now." Irene said pointing towards the elevator.
"Oh please. There is no way I'm not coming inside to check the place out."
Irene rolled her eyes and pressed the code to her apartment. She and Wendy carried the groceries inside. Wendy dropped the bags on the counter and looked around.
"Hey, you're a damn liar. This is pretty nice." Wendy said admiring the apartment.
She poked her head into Irene's room. "The view in your room is great, Rene! Look at all this sunlight you get. You love natural lighting."
Irene shook her head and laughed as she put her groceries away. She heard a door open and looked up to see her roommate walking out of her bedroom.
"U-Uh hey." Irene said giving a short wave to her roommate.
"Oh you're back." The roommate eyed the grocery bags and smirked, "With food. I was starting to think you didn't eat."
"Yeah.." Irene awkwardly laughed.
Wendy came out Irene's room and sped towards the other end of the apartment. "What about this si- Oh! Hello!" Wendy greeted, flustered at the sudden appearance of the roommate.
"Hi there. Umm..." The roommate glanced at Irene, waiting for her to do introductions.
"Huh? Oh! This is my best friend, Wendy. Wendy this is my roommate uhh..."
Wendy and the roommate stared at Irene
"This is my roommate."
The roommate laughed awkwardly. "Do you not know my name?"
"I...uh" Irene's mind was racing trying to somehow magically remember the girl's name.
"I'm Seulgi. Seulgi Kang" The roommate said turning back to Wendy, with her right hand extended for a handshake.
"It's nice to meet you, Seulgi. Sorry about Irene. She's a bit of a ditz sometimes." Wendy giggled.
Irene shot a glare at Wendy.
"Well, I was about to go out and meet someone, so I need to get going. It was nice meeting you, Wendy. Feel free to come visi
