Your parents went to bed early. You were in the kitchen making your special dessert. So far everyone that you had made it for, loved it. It was shaved ice with ice cream, red bean, fruits, cereal, and whipped cream. You made tiny heart-shaped waffles and added them to the side.

You added the last squeeze of whipped cream and stepped back to admire your work.

You beamed happily *Perfect! I bet Byunghun oppa will like it!* You had managed to write the word ‘WELCOME’ over the ice with cereal bits. *I better take him to it now before it melts!* You grabbed the tray and headed upstairs.

You knocked on the room. There was no answer. *Is he asleep?!* You knocked harder. There was still no response.

You lightly twisted open the doorknob and peeked inside, “Oppa?” But no one was there.

You stepped inside, befuddled by the empty room. You scratched your head, “Did he go somewhere?”

You set the tray on his desk and looked around. You opened the closet to see that he hadn’t put his clothes away yet. *Lazy oppa.* You giggled to yourself. *I wonder if Byunghun oppa is the messy or organized oppa.* You spotted a silver necklace on the desk. There was a silver ring on it that had his name on it.

You felt a heavy shadow behind you and glanced back in surprise. L. Joe stared at you darkly.

“Oppa.” You whispered.

L. Joe whipped his possession away from you and smoothly put it in the back pocket of his sweatpants. His hair was wet and glistening in the dim light.

“Oh. You were taking a shower?” You blinked innocently.

“What are you doing in here? I thought you told me this is my room.” L. Joe lowly growled.

“It is! But…I wanted to give you a treat! Ta-da!” You held out the shaved ice with a proud smile. “It looks good, huh?! Guess what it says!” You pointed to the soggy cereal bits.

L. Joe stared at it for a moment then walked away, unimpressed.

You followed him to his backpack where he started rummaging for a shirt. “You should eat this right away before all the ice melts! Once it melts, it’s no good! I would make you another one but I ran out of red bean…” You lightly nibbled on your thumb. You peered over his shoulder to see inside his backpack. There wasn’t much.

You brightened, “Oppa, tomorrow is the weekend! Let’s go shopping! I’ll ask mom and dad to buy you new clothes!” *I’m not a fucking beggar.* L. Joe thought. You continued to blabber, “It’ll be fun! We can shop around then go get ice cream! I know a good ice cream shop in Dongdaemun-“

L. Joe abruptly spun around and sneered, “Do you ever shut your mouth?!”

You blinked in surprise, “Huh?”

“You’ve been talking nonstop ever since I got here.” He snapped.

“Oh…does that bother you?” You asked.

L. Joe gave you a look. You got the hint. “Mianhae. I didn’t know! I was just trying to make you comfortable! And I got so carried away! You don’t know how long I’ve been waiting for an oppa like you!”

L. Joe straightened up and gazed at you. You beamed joyfully at him, “I hope we get along well, oppa. We’re family now after all. Of course we won’t get along all the time. But let’s try the best we can. I’ll be the best little sister I can be. You will be my oppa, right?” You held out your hand.

L. Joe whacked it away. You blinked, taken aback by his rude action.

L. Joe strode towards you. Your feet reflexively shuffled you backwards until you hit the door with a light thump. L. Joe planted his palm next to your face and you winced at the loud noise. He tilted his head, almost mockingly, and gazed right through you. “I thought I made it clear over dinner. You are not my family and will never be. We’re strangers. We don’t share one hint of blood.”

“B-but my parents adopted you so by law-“

“By that damn law, we are. But to me, no. You willnever be my sister and I will never be your brother.” L. Joe hissed.

Your heart slightly sank, “Never?” “Never.” L. Joe repeated again. “You’re nothing to me.”

You looked down in sadness. He felt slightly guilty but shook it off, “Look, I’m just using you and your family, araso? I can’t be on my own until I graduate. So once I graduate high school, that’s the end between your family and me. That’s my ticket to a getaway. You’ll never have to deal with me again. So while I’m here just pretend I don’t exist, all right?” L. Joe pushed himself off the door and walked away.

“I still think you’re my brother.” You blurted. He paused and turned around with round eyes *What the hell does she not understand through that thick skull of hers?!* You softly gazed at him. “I won’t stop trying, oppa. One day, you’ll see me as a sister. And even after you graduate high school, you’ll still want to stay with our family. I’ll make sure of that.”

L. Joe was agitated but also slightly impressed by your guts.

Your lips curled into a smile once again and you held out the dessert, “You want some?”

L. Joe furrowed his eyebrows and strode towards you. In one shove you and your shaved ice were out the door. The door slammed shut behind you and you pouted. *Meanie. I worked hard on this. I guess I’ll have to eat it all on my own.* You took the tray back downstairs.

The door cracked open and L. Joe peeked out. He saw you walking down the staircase and sighed in relief. *Let’s see how persistent you can be since I’m damn stubborn to.* L. Joe closed the door with a defiant snort.
