“He’s my biological brother. My brother Lee Sungyeol.”

Saying his name hurt you so much. You put a hand over your aching chest. You felt like your heart was ripping in two.

Your other half was gone. The one who always protected, loved, and cherished you…was now in heaven.

L. Joe stared at you, “Y-you have a brother? A real one?”

You slowly nodded.

L. Joe paused then asked, “Where is he now?”

You swallowed hard. “He’s…dead.”

You whispered. His eyes widened. You sadly looked into his eyes, “Sungyeol oppa died three years ago.”

You picked up the picture and gazed at it. You placed your fingertips over his face in recollection. “You probably heard some things about me at school, right?”

“What things- oh.” L. Joe remembered Myunghoon asking about you. “Wait…is that why you went to see the psychiatrist?”

You nodded and put the picture back down on the bed. “That day…Misool unnie said some really bad things. But those bad things were true.” You gulped. “She told me I killed my own brother. And…I did.” You tearfully looked at L. Joe. “It killed my own brother. It was all my fault. It was my fault Sungyeol oppa died. If it hadn’t been for me-“

He saw that you were starting to hyperventilate. L. Joe grabbed your shoulders and looked into your eyes. “Hey, it’s okay.” He softly spoke and gazed at you in concern, “You don’t have to tell me anything if you don’t want to.”

You shut your eyes and your tears dropped onto your lap. You shook your head and opened your eyes. “No, I have to tell you now or I’ll never be able to really get over this.”

You took a shaky, deep breath and began, “My brother Sungyeol was the greatest brother in the world…He knew everything about me. My fears, my likes, my dislikes. He cared for me so much. He would never let Misool or anyone else bully me. He loved me so much…that he gave up his own life for me…”

(This is flashback so you're younger now)

You were in the living room watching a hilarious variety show when all of a sudden the lights went out. The TV shut off also. It became dead quiet. You looked up with wide eyes. *A blackout!* Your parents weren’t home either. You blindly stumbled towards the stairs. “OPPA! OPPA!”

“Saerom, where are you?!” Sungyeol called.

“Oppa! I can’t see anything! Where are you?!” You tripped and crashed onto your knee, “OWWW!”

“Saerom?!” Sungyeol’s voice came out in a panic.

You heard footsteps coming down the staircase. “Oppa! Oppa! Where are you?!” You started to cry.

Warm, strong hands wrapped around your wrists. “I’m here, you stupid girl. I’m always somewhere near you.” Sungyeol pulled you up.

“Ow, ow! My knee!” You whined. “Aigoo. Who told you to run in the dark?” He pushed your forehead.

You pouted and rubbed the sore spot. “Come on.” Sungyeol draped you over his back and carried you up to his room. He set you on the bed, “Stay here while I go get the flashlight.” Sungyeol turned to go but you grabbed his arm. He looked at you.

You shook your head frantically, “Don’t leave me in the dark!” “I’ll just be outside! We’ll still be on the same floor! I’ll even leave the room open!” Sungyeol roared but you refused to let go. He sighed and slapped his hand over his face.

A minute later, you and Sungyeol were in the bathroom. You were clinging onto his neck with your legs wrapped your around his waist. “You’re suffocating me. Argh-“ He choked. You loosened your grip on him, “Mianhae.” You sniffled.

Sungyeol glanced at you in an annoyed manner, “Yah. You better not have wiped that on me.” “Too late.” You joked.

“Get off.” Sungyeol tried to pry you off but you held on tighter, “OKAY! OKAY! MIANHAE!”

Sungyeol chuckled and shook his head. He rummaged through the drawer and pulled out the first aid kit. “There we go.” Sungyeol pulled out the flashlight and turned it on. “Let’s go back to my room.” You released him and started wlaking back. But things turned dark again and you wondered where the light could have gone. You spun around only to be confronted by a ghost Sungyeol. “Boo!” He shined the light under his face.

“AHH!” You fell onto the ground.

Sungyeol cracked up loudly, “YOU SHOULD HAVE SEEN YOUR FACE! HILARIOUS! PUHAHAHA!”

“OPPA! IT’S NOT FUNNY!” You started to wail.

Sungyeol stopped laughing. He started panicking, “Y-yah, it was a joke. Why you crying?” He touched your arm but you threw his arm off. “I WANT TO CALL MOM! CALL MOM AND DAD FOR ME NOW!” Sungyeol stooped in front of you and clucked his tongue as he shook his head, “You’re such a baby. I’m going to tell all your friends that you’re a crybaby.” You whacked his arm. “Ow! I’m going to tell mom!” Sungyeol threatened.

“Then I’m going to tell all your high school friends.” You stuck your tongue out. He tapped your forehead, “Where did you learn to threaten someone like that?” “You.” You smiled.

Sungyeol chuckled, “Aigoo. I taught my sister the wrong thing.” He turned his back to you, “Hop on.”

The quarrel had been forgotten and you hopped onto his back. Sungyeol carried you to his room and set you on the bed. He stuck the flashlight in his mouth and pulled your leg up. He unrolled your sweatpants and gazed at the damage on your knee. It was red, bruised, and swollen. Sungyeol took the flashlight out of his mouth and spoke, “Look at this. You’re covered in so many bruises and cuts from being so clumsy. Aigoo. What guy will take you as their wife now?”

You stuck your tongue out at him.

Sungyeol shook his head and bit the flashlight. He shined the light over your knee and applied medicine on it. You sniffled at the pain. “Oh, don’t be such a baby. This isn’t anything compared to my fall in gym last year.” Sungyeol said through his teeth. He grabbed the bandage and rolled it around your knee. He taped it up and grabbed the flashlight from his teeth. “There.”

You rolled your pants back down.

“Next time there’s a blackout just stay where you are. I’ll come find you, araso? Or you’ll get hurt like this again.” Sungyeol chided.

You smiled and nodded, “Araso, oppa~”

Sungyeol smiled back and ruffled your hair.

There wasn’t anything he wouldn’t do for his adorable little sister.

You were his pride and joy and his greatest treasure.
