Just a little bit of context…

In which century does the Silver Tree start?

It is placed around the second half of the XVII century. With fictional Kings and Queens, but I try to make the sociopolitical context as realistic as possible.

There will be three kingdoms involved in this story: the Chinese Empire (Qing Dynasty), the Kingdom of Joseon (Joseon Dynasty) and the Kingdom of Ayutthaya.

• The Chinese Empire. After years of corruption, famines and constant exterior threats, a noble household from the region of Manchuria starts a rebellion against the Ming Dynasty, who will lead to almost thirty years of conquest and alliances and will settle the Qing Dynasty as the new regent of the Chinese Empire. The year 1644, starts an important turning point for the Qing Dynasty, as the Third Emperor finally conquests the capital, Beijing. During the remaining years of his reign, he has to consolidate his power through all China (because until 1668 there will be rebels and descendants of the Ming Dynasty trying to get back their power). The obsession to settle forces a politic oppression towards the other Kingdoms in the East Seas causes several invasions on the Kingdom of Joseon during the second half of the 16^th century. After the invasions and with the official establishment of the Qing Dynasty, the Chinese Emperors seek to get the support of the surrounding Kingdoms (Joseon, Lang Xang, Ayutthaya, Đại Việt, Mongolia and the Tibetan Kingdoms), but their oppressive measures make the international relationships difficult.

• The Kingdom of Joseon. The Chinese invasions caused an impoverishment of Joseon’s economy. But, with that unequal relationship, Joseon Kings lost control of their nation, especially the Northern Provinces, who get under the influence of the Chinese Empire, concretely Pyongan and Hamgyong. That differentiation between Provinces will be important when Korea divides between North and South Korea: the actual borders are quite similar to the ones in the Joseon Period. That differentiation between the provinces causes the creation of several factions (the Northern and the Southern factions), who attack each other and try to manipulate the government. After the last Chinese invasion in 1637, the Joseon Kings tried to solve the problems between factions and started a period of political and social reforms (led by some scholars and specialists who thought investment in trade and other industries apart from the food industry were the key to improve the economy), which led to a second golden age of the Joseon Dynasty.  

• The Kingdom of Ayutthaya. Surrounded by the French, the Dutch and the English who started their trade and economic expansion through Asia, the kingdom faced an internal crisis because the kings decided to expand the influence of the European countries inside their boundaries. That made some nobles angry about it. Nevertheless, due to the benefits the Kingdom took from those exclusive exchanges, they had access to a market of benefits which lead to a rising in their economy. The most famous king during the period was Narai, who took the power after dethroning his uncle. In this story, Lisa is the granddaughter of the legendary King Narai's and has a sister married to the current King (his third cousin). But, since Lisa's father dislikes the influence the Europeans have in the kingdom, the King has “exiled” him as their ambassador in Joseon.

20 years before the Silver Tree...

So, there will be references all the time to my old and completed story, The Silver Dragons. Because it sets the context to understand the Silver Tree. If you haven't read it, you can go and start with it on the following link (The Silver Dragons Fanfic). But, if you are a lazy person or aren't interested in gtae/topfanny fanfics, I'll be a nice person and sum up it a little for you. 

When Choi Seung-hyun took the throne and became the King of Joseon, he had two goals in mind:

• Make his Kingdom prosper after the Chinese Invasions during the reigns of his antecessors. (I explained the historical context better at the Foreword of the Silver Dragons). 
• Make his Kingdom less dependable of the Chinese Empire and the scholars (because during the Joseon Period, in Korea, the Kings started to lose their power and influence against the scholars, most of them corrupted). 

But, some people at court plotted with the Chinese Emperor, so their privileges would maintain and the Emperor could take control over the Kingdom of Joseon through his bloodline. His allies were:

• Park Han Byul. Former Crown Princess and member of one of the most powerful families in Joseon, The Clan of the Parks of the West. That Clan put one of their daughters, Former Queen Park Sandara into the throne and they are relatives of the Crown Prince Jeongwan, the eldest son of the King.
  • After 20 years, they have lost influence in Court and wished to take it back once the Crown Prince becomes king, but the other Clans are making things difficult for the legitimate Crown Prince. 
• Kwon Bo Ah. She was the sister of Kwon Jiyong, Kwon Yuri and Kwon Seung-hyun, ancient members of the Silver Dragons. She was the First Palace Lady, the woman in charge of all the servants and organization, so she had an incredible power. Her ambition and thirst for power blinded her when the King started to take control of the Court. For that reason, he proposed the Chinese Emperor an alliance to make King Seung-hyun weaker, by killing the Crown Prince and putting on the throne a Korean-Chinese Prince (Choi Tae Hyung), because the nobles are interested in keeping favorable commercial relationships with China. 
  • Lady Bo Ah has died, but not her ideas. And twenty years later, thanks to the impressing talents and abilities of the First Prince Choi Tae Hyung, some noble households (the ones who benefit from the Chinese influence) would like to see him on the throne. 
• Park Sung-woo. He was Royal Concubine Bom's father and the leader of another of the most powerful families in Joseon, The Clan of the Parks of the East. Since all his sons helped him to plot against the Crown, they were executed twenty years before the beginning of this story. The only one who survived were the young lord Park Chanyeol, who was put under the protection of Kim HeeChul (one of the most trustworthy advisors of the King), and the minor branches of the clan.
  • Twenty years later they had lost influence and power (like the Parks of the West) and want their power back by putting the Third Prince Yeon Jun (who is related to the Parks of the East) on the throne. The Prince is the bastard son of the King and over the years he has proven to be an extremely intelligent and ambitious man. 

For that reason, they killed the ancient Queen (Park Sandara), so a Chinese Princess (Qing Mi-young) could become the Queen of Joseon and give the King a legitimate male heir (First Prince Choi Tae Hyung). But, when the Emperor and his allies tried to kill the Crown Prince (Choi Jeongwan) twenty years before, the Royal Family with the help of the Silver Dragons (Kwon Jiyong, Kwon Yuri, Kwon Seun-hyun and Dong YoungBae among others) defeated them. 

And... who are the Silver Dragons?

Well, during the plot to kill Queen Sandara (27 years before the events of the Silver Tree), the three traitors mentioned above were able to blame Kwon Jiyong and his family. So, the lord had to escape from Joseon and, as a revenge, he became a pirate lord and attacked the Crown. But, when he met princess Taeyeon and learned the truth about what had happened, he decided to quit, helped the Royal Family and eloped with the princess. Nobody knows where they are now.
