☆ AFF POLICE ☆ / Let's fight plagiarism!

Description

Help stop the plagiarism of stories here on Asianfanfics! Please be more vigilant about these things since although fanfiction may seem like a small, meaningless matter, plagiarism is very much a big offense. Learn more about this and how to handle it properly by viewing this thread.

[ DISCLAIMER ] In no way does this thread nor I condone any form of bashing / cyber bullying either.
1. In the event of ALL forms of plagiarism, please make sure to handle it RESPECTFULLY and KINDLY.
2. NEVER say harsh words or insults to anybody who has been caught plagiarizing. Ask them about it or inform them politely, otherwise do not go about contact ing the plagiarizer yourselves.
3. Yes, the plagiarizer is doing something wrong, but they have their reasons. Let's not add up on the negativity and instead help them see the mistakes themselves! Most of the time, they will understand. It's only when they refuse to cooperate that reports should be made accordingly.
4. Once again, DO NOT bash anybody you catch plagiarizing! That is not the point of this thread at all. I really just wish people would be more mindful of plagiarizing works and how it's practically stealing another person's hardwork.
5. I really just hate that aspect of the original author not getting credit or experiencing problems due to plagiarism. Many authors here has been plagiarized so much that they've taken to locking their stories or taking them down, which could be hopefully helped by people being more aware of plagiarism.

(An old thread related to plagiarism is also found here on Asianfanfics, but it hasn't been active in a long time and also had a few problems with the way things went on. It's been years, so there are more stories now and more chances of plagiarism. Hopefully people are still willing to help stop plagiarism and also that people are more mature when dealing with these sort of things. I do believe the rules of AFF regarding plagiarism is a lot more strict now, too, so let's keep the community running well. I've added bits here to help not spam the moderators with reports, too!)

I will be focusing only on plagiarism regarding stories for now.

" Plagiarized content: note that simply changing the names of the characters of someone else's story for your pairing is not an "adaptation" but is considered plagiarism. Content with word-for-word snippets of other published works that is reported by the community will be removed unless granted explicit permission by the original author. "

Asianfanfics Content Guidelines. This is also seen at the bottom of every story page when you're writing one! Hard to miss!

This issue has come to my attention quite some time ago. Plagiarism started out with just authors copying other people's fanfiction- completely and with no changes whatsoever- and claiming it as theirs. There are also cases where a fanfiction is re-posted without permission from the author (in this case, from another website onto AFF- e.g. Fanfiction.net, Wattpad, Archiveofourown) or even translated without permission. However recently, it has been stressed by Asianfanfics that adaptations that are merely changing the character names and posting the story counts as plagiarism, unless of course given permission by the author. Many cases do not have permission, though, even if they give due credit in their descriptions. I have seen far too many cases of this happening to people I know and also certain novels and such, even with other forms of fanfiction!

I understand in many cases of such plagiarism and adaptations, it's because the fandom lacks stories or wants their own versions for well-loved stories to share with others. While the essence behind doing so is in good faith and for good reason, if you look at it, please be aware that it's still an offense to the original author! If one really does enjoy the story, you could share the original one. In some cases, maybe even ask the author for permission first in case they actually allow one to do so, when it comes to other fanfictions. When it comes to actual novels and books being plagiarized, it's an even bigger offense since it's outside of the haven of the Internet and plagiarizers may face actual consequences. Maybe even Asianfanfics if the case gets big enough!

1. Again, one could always ask permission first! Always ask permission because you'll never know when proper permission could be granted and make things better for everybody.
2. As much as possible, refrain from doing character-name-change-adaptations of actual published novels the most. Report these immediately! This is a copyright offense. Please DO NOT ALLOW this sort of thing, too, if you are aware of it being done! I understand you would want to ignore the fact that it's plagiarism just so you could read the story featuring the characters you want, but again, this is unfair to the original author.
3. If you want to provide more material for your fandom, you could always try writing your own story instead! If you like the way another story went, you could use it as INSPIRATION (and even credit it for giving you IDEAS you could work with!) rather than outright copying the whole story word per word, as well as the whole plot.
4. Posting a plagiarized story also has the following risks
a. It'll eventually be reported and taken down, thus any work you put into it (changing the names, posting it, etc.) will be for nothing.
b. For readers reading a plagiarized work, once it's reported you'll never know what happens. You'll be left hanging.
c. Lots of law stuff you really, really, really don't want to get into.

Many of you may say it's best that we all just mind our own business, let fanfiction remind something fun and not so serious, but I guess it's a personal thing of mine that I really can't stand such things. I do not mean to rid fandoms of good fanfiction, but there are other ways to achieve this than by copying an entire story. It's also rude to the original author if they explicitly state not to copy or re-distribute any of their work. Especially for other fanfiction writers, who do all of this essentially for free, only for it to end up stolen or copied without their consent or credit, cancelling them of the effort they gave into it since it'll fall into hands of people who do not deserve the praise. Please do not thank people who do "adaptations" if you know it's plagiarized. It is not a shame if they never finish posting the plagiarized story since it is not their hardwork to begin with.

Foreword

How can we help stop plagiarism?

First, I hope everything above has been read and understood so that no trouble will be caused.
These are also some stuff that can be seen from AFF's Frequently Asked Questions, just tweaked and with additional notes.
Once again, and I cannot stress this enough, let's all handle this kindly and maturely! Although there is no excuse for plagiarism.
Stopping plagiarizing is in no way an offense to anybody. Rather, it is stopping the offenses made to original authors.

UPDATED VERSION: Thanks to further input from Korekrypta!

1. Contact the ORIGINAL author about it.
a. This is if the author is readily available- AFF, Wattpad, other forms of ONLINE material.
b. Inform them of the plagiarized material. You could also add in if they have given any permission to re-distribute or make "adaptations" of the work.
c. In the event of non-AFF authors, you may offer to report it for them unless they said they will deal with it themselves.
d. If the plagiarized material is not an online source (e.g. actual published novels, books, articles, etc.) and the author is not available, report immediately. This is more than just plagiarism, it's an actual copyright infringement.

2. Report it once you're SURE it's been plagiarized.
- Do not assume a work has been plagiarized unless:
a. You've gotten word from the original author.
b. It's a published book / online novel of any sort.
- You can find it at the top of the story page, below the title and other story details.
AFF asks for the original link / source of any plagiarized content, so have it ready.
This results in the story being flagged and will eventually be checked by the Moderators.
- DO NOT repeatedly report a story, since it will flood the AFF Moderators.
You can CHECK if a story has been reported already before, so please do so before sending in a report!
Trust me, they work fast, so be patient! One report will do.

3. If you don't want to deal with / report it yourself, feel free to PM me about it.
- As much as possible, I would like to keep reports of plagiarism outside the comments. This is so that no public shaming will happen!
You may comment it if you really want to, but note that I will delete the comment after I have reported the story.

However, for every plagiarized report I receive, I will be posting a corresponding update about what happened so others will be aware.
The reason why I made this is to help stop plagiarism in a good way, after all, so it would be great if everybody could know about it.
It is only to inform people that some stories has been reported and dealt with.

If you are a victim of the plagiarizing, please do not be brash or emotional when it comes to contacting the person who plagiarized you! Eventually, things will be righted as long as it is reported, even if it doesn't cancel out what they have gained from plagiarizing.

Once again, let's not allow such things to happen. Let's respect each other in the fanfic and general writing community!

Thank you to everybody who read this and will help stop plagiarism here on Asianfanfics. For general concerns, you may comment or message me or even write on my wall.

NOTE: I am pretty sure I've stated my reasons for doing so clearly. I will likewise not accept any form of bashing towards me and this thread. If you do not agree and you insist on being vocal about it, then let's talk about it. However, I am only doing what is right, that's certain.

I read a fanfiction that I really love but have recently read a manga that is SEVERAL years older (over 4 years I think) with the same plot, exact same events, same characters with different names (same roles and actions), and even share over 5 same quotes(exact wording on the scanlation available on MangaPark. I’m absolutely sure it is not an accident. It is a featured story on AFF too. I have reached out to the suspected plagiarizer but never recieved a response. While I can write in Japanese I do not know how and if I can report it. I do really like their work so I am hesitant to report it and they wrote a big long “similarities are coincidental” passage on the forward of the story.
My comment has not been deleted but I do see that the author has logged in since I made the comment. I even included the suspected passages in there and the name of the suspected source material.

As somebody who's been plagiarised several times before and also helped to sort out plagiarism cases, I have to say that the first port of call if something has been plagiarised should ALWAYS be to contact the author whose hard work has been nicked and the mods. I've seen (and it's happened to me as well) people contacting the plagiariser first instead, which often doesn't solve anything - quite often the plagiariser will just deactivate and then reactivate at a later date, or sometimes just block the people (and the original author) so that they can no longer see what's going on. The person who has been plagiarised should be the one calling the shots to make sure that it is dealt with correctly. Not to mention that if people take it on themselves to sort out plagiarism when they aren't either in the offending or offended party, that's often when the witch hunts and the flaming starts. I've also seen people assuming that something is plagiarism and giving the person a hard time when they have actually received permission from the original author - which is why it is important to contact the original author first, to ensure that there are no misunderstandings. (Also bear in mind that sometimes people do lie about whether or not they've been given permission.)

In principle I support trying to reduce instances of plagiarism, but the proper mode of dealing with it ought to be 1) inform the author who has been plagiarised (so that they can deal with it as they see fit - if they're approached in the right way, most will be fair approaching the plagiariser rather than going at them all guns blazing) and then 2) report it to the mods (or let the author do so in order to stop the mods from being flooded). Also, to prove that it is plagiarism, screenshots ought to be taken of both works to prove the similarities, and of the dates, and any proof that the plagiariser had read the original (e.g. if they're subscribed to the story/had commented on it etc.).

I am definitely for this. I forgot where I saw this, but there was one fic from wattpad that was posted here because the AFF user "thought it was really funny and wanted to share it," but I didn't see any form of permission at all, which irked me a lot; I should have reported it :-/
