It started with a glance.

It started with a beat.

It started with a thud.

It started with a smile.

It ended with a pen.

It ended with a paper.

Foreword

A cold sea breeze was softly caressing his left cheek. The night was still young but there were no people around besides them. It was just the two of them. Only the two of them. Where they were? He did not really care anymore. All he cared at the moment were his loud thumping heart, her retreating back, and the note in his hand.

The note. Yes, the note.

The note that made him felt anxious the moment he saw it. The note that got him scared as soon as he read what was written on it.

Scared. That dreaded feeling he always despised to feel everytime he was away. He knew he shouldn't be but he could not help it. He always could not help it.

He's tired? No. Tired is still a pretty much good word to describe him. He's drained, spent, burned-out. His legs were going numb from all the emotions he's been feeling right now. Yes, from all the emotions and not for the fact that he just ran more than a kilometer away from where he was awhile ago.

It has been a minute since he came and still, he was panting. Feeling he could not breathe, he let some air out of his mouth. Then inhale, then exhale once again. He tried speaking but no words came out. Guess he's still out of breath. In the end, he just stared at her as she still looking at the horizon, from what he thought, her back still facing him.

As much as he did not want to take his eyes away from her, he did as he glanced on the note that is still in his hands. It was a note she left to him while he was sleeping. He knew it was from her because he knows the way she writes. Every of every letter she writes, it has long been engraved in his mind. From a simple glance, he found himself staring at the note. Not really reading what was written, he was contemplating what did she mean about what she wrote.

As his mind wandered with his eyes still on the paper, he did not see how she slowly turned her back, facing him with those same eyes that made him fall for her so hard. She was wearing a plain white dress, above the knee length, her almost waist-length hair being swayed by the wind and her ever so soft hands on her back.

"That was rather quick," she softly said with a chuckle. "You made it before I call quits."

He was lost from his reverie as soon as he heard that unpleasant word. "W-what?" He did not now know if he's struggling for words because he's still out of breath or because of what she just said. She, on the other hand, continued looking at him with amusement in her eyes.

"Q-quits?" He asked disbelievingly as he looked at her eyes searching for the truth. She just stared him back for an answer. Fear started to eat him whole as he blinked. "You..."

"Yeah?"

He marched towards her with heavy footsteps reflecting what he had been feeling ever since he saw that good-for-nothing note. His brows knitting together with nervousness and anger this time while his hand waved the note to her face. "This. And. You. Want. To. Call. It. Quits?" he asked emphasizing every word that came out of him. He stopped when he was just a breath away from her while she was now sporting a poker face look. This woman! How could she! he thought.

He closed his eyes as pain starting to envelop him. He breathe in, he breathe out before opening his eyes once again as he bit his lower lip. Anxiousness, nervousness, fear, pain... all the negative emotions became evident on his lingering eyes now. He reached for her left arm until he held her hand as he tried to suppress the tears that were almost giving in.

"Dara..." he called her name softly, pleadingly. "Don't do this to me. Don't do this to us!" He begged as he rubbed her hands soothingly hoping it would change her mind. There's no way they're gonna break now. There's absolutely no way. Not now, not ever.
