A Summer In Seoul

Description

Song Ha Na (or 'Hannah' as she prefers it) is not your typical Korean girl. First things first, she's biracial. She has Korean blood from her father and Caucasian from her mother. Being half-Asian ain't easy at all in the U.S, but somehow, she's made it worked. She soon looses touch with her Korean roots as she tries to assimilate herself to her Western lifestyle. One day, her father's had enough and soon ships her off overseas. But out of all places in the world, her parents had decided to send her to the one place where she hates. South Korea.

Foreword

The Night Before

“You know, it’s funny that you’re half-Korean but you’ve never been to your homeland before.”
Song Ha Na, or commonly known as ‘Hannah’, rolled her eyes at her Caucasian friend as she took another swig of her beer. “Homeland? Laura, my homeland would always be the here in the States. Plus, I don’t even speak fluent Korean.” Her friend Laura snorted in response then asked “So why are your parents sending you there again for the summer?”
“They claim that I’m beginning to forget my roots, becoming too ‘Westernised’ to their likings. And mind you, they were the ones who decided to pack their bags and move here to chase ‘The American Dream’ in the first place!!” Hannah exploded in anger, her arms flailing around with the bottle of beer in her left hand. Laura shook her head at her friend’s antics in response.
“Correction! Your dad’s the one who left Korea for the U.S, okay? Now, calm down before we get kicked out of this pub!”

Hannah (Ha Na) and Laura were best friends since middle school. While Laura was your typical Southern California chick with her tan skin and blonde wavy hair, Hannah, however was different from the other girls of Santa Monica with her pale skin and jet black hair. Hannah had a hard time fitting in with the other girls. While the others get easily tanned in the hot California sun, Hannah couldn’t. Maybe it was the Asian genes in her working their horrid magic but everytime she tried to tan herself, she’d get beet red instead. When she drank, she would get the ‘Asian flush’. Hannah despised her Asian genetics, but what could she do? Blame her mom? She couldn’t. Being the only Half-Korean kid in town was hard enough on it’s own but thankfully for her, she met Laura.

“Remember to Skype me.”  Hannah heard her friend asked over the loud music of the pub and nodded in response. It was her last night here in Santa Monica before she leaves for Korea the next day. Soon, she’ll be spending her summer break at Seoul with her aunt and cousins.
“Hey, if you could get me SHINee’s autographed album, I would love you forever.”
Hannah frowned.
“Who now?”
“SHINee? Oh you know, the K-pop group that I’ve showed you a billion times? Onew? Jonghyun? Minho? Are you sure you’re even Korean?”
“Half.”

“Still..” Laura and Hannah glanced at each other before doubling over in laughter. So what if Hannah is half-Korean? Just because she has Korean lineage doesn’t mean she has to like their music and dramas? Hannah slowed down her laughter to a chuckle. It’s just for the summer. It’s not like I’m leaving forever. I’ll still be back for college here. Hannah thought to herself then took another swig of her beer.

It’s just for the summer then I’ll be back.
